Viking is a 4 year old NM, Golden/Husky mix.  He is from Mexico and also knows Spanish!!  Viking is good with other dogs and cats, and is also good with kids and lived with a 7 month old baby and 3 year old.  Viking was surrendered because his former owners moved to a home without a fenced yard.

A note from Viking's transporter said that he was absolutely a doll for the 3-hour car ride.  He sat in the back of the jeep without fussing.  Viking didn't even try to climb up front and help drive!  He stayed in back, quietly looking out the window for most of the ride.  He'd move up to accept a pet or a small treat, but otherwise let his chauffeur focus on his driving, while Viking focused on watching the fields roll past.

Hola!

It’s me, Durango! Five years ago I was named Viking and adopted by Mom and Dad, but being true Packers fans, the name had to go. Since I was born and raised in Tijuana (how I came to Minnesota and RAGOM is a secret), Durango seemed a very appropriate name. I’m very smart, so I know that Rango, Rango-bango and Big D are all names for me, too. (Sorry, but I gotta admit—you humans are verrrrry silly about your nicknames.)

We live in Western Wisconsin on a little lake with lots of woods, so there are always birds, ducks, geese, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, deer and even an occasional bear to look at. (I’m very into Nature.) I don’t even bark that much (except for the bear and, oh yeah, the deer who came up on the deck . . .).  I have two canine brothers: Dakota, who is a purebred GR (he’s Little D) and Maurice, who is half husky like me but his other half is Collie, not Golden. Mom and Dad’s grand-dogs, Sierra and Kodiak, come to visit sometimes. Kodiak, who is Golden and Samoyed, looks almost exactly like me but only half as big. That must be why they call him Mini-Me when the two of us are around. Needless to say, there’s always plenty of canine chaos and fun at our place. We even have two of those cat animals but they ignore us.

With my golden attributes and husky enhancements, people always say that I am gorgeous boy (I agree). I’m very blonde with big brown eyes (GR), a curved tail that looks like a plume (GR+SH), a longish nose and unusual set to my ears (GR + SH again). I’m also tall with a very long body (who knows where that comes from) and if I stretch I can take up almost all of the bed, especially on the diagonal, which makes it difficult for Little D to try and find space—even though they call it a King sized bed.

So, everybody out there, I could go on and on about how things have turned out so great for me but Mom is giving me the “silencio” sign. The important thing I wanted to be sure to say was I’m still a RAGOM dog deep in my heart and my great life is thanks to you.

Viking had his vet visit on Tuesday and is now up to date on all of his vaccinations.  He is heartworm negative as well as free from internal parasites.  He must be the long, lean type because even though he is so big, he only weighs in at 79 pounds (and we were going to bet money on 90!).  Everyone at the office was very impressed with his bi-lingual abilities - particularly "beso" for a kiss.  Tom, our son, is helping all of us use both English and Spanish and now Viking comes, sits, kisses and shakes in English, but we still use Spanish for down and stay - but he is so smart, he'll learn those, too!  Still pulls a bit on the leash with a flat collar, we will try a Gentle Leader.

 

We took Viking, Diva and Lady to the farm last night because it was so warm - 88 degrees - and my husband has a small cabin in the shelter belt.  Viking IS NOT a runner.  He stayed around with the other dogs, was happy to lay on the porch, my 8-year old nephew came over and was laying next to him and playing with him.  He likes to sleep next to the bed (or sneak on the bed) and is very Velcro - almost tripped over him getting out of the shower this morning because that is where he was waiting for me.  Loves men - knows already that Paul comes home at 5:15 and starts waiting for him in the front hall about 5:05.  We have a full glass door so he can survey the block while he waits.

Lo nosotros amor!  Muy magnifico perro, Viking!  Our first bi-lingual foster "furkid" arrived safely yesterday with muchos gracias et Joe and Michelle.  Okay - so we're still at the high school Spanish level around here, but we're hoping that Viking will teach us all some more :-)  Viking moved here from Mexico not long ago.  He is wonderful with people of all ages and he has been having a blast since he got here, running and playing with his foster family.  His two favorites are Sarge and Diva.  Diva, although German, has managed to bridge the communication gap with good old-fashioned dog-play!

Viking is the most beautiful dog - absolutely striking!  He is very large and tall.  Almost as tall as our Mastiff cross, with long legs, wonderful light-blonde coat and a handsome face.  He needs to go to the vet for an update on all his shots, but he is already neutered.  We will have him weighed, but I would not be surprised if he is over 90 pounds and he is in perfect shape.  He is very well mannered, housebroken and does not jump up on people.  Comes when he is called and as of right now, knows "sit" in both English and Spanish.  We are working on bi-lingual fluency in all the other basic commands.  There was a previous report of counter-surfing, but any of my "kids" will do that, too - the temptation is just too great - so we never have anything out.  He sleeps all night without incident, is not a barker and gives really sweet kisses.  I hand fed him this morning with no problem.

 

If you want a "head-turning" dog who will reward you with tons of love and affection, a natural athlete to join your family on outings and games, but who also is a big old cuddle bug - here's your man!
