3/26/07: Maggie has traded in the heavy puppy mill chain that had to be cut from around her neck for a bright pink collar that says, "Hey world, I'm beautiful and now I get to wear fun, pretty doggie "stuff!"

Maggie is a senior lady from the N.D. puppy mill, with a birth date of 9/9/98. She is sweet, shy, very timid, and ready to start learning about the good life. She arrived and met both of the residents without a fuss at all, despite one of them wanting to climb into the crate with her (neither of our residents has a crate so it seemed like a cool, new toy to them…complete with a cool new friend).

Maggie spent some time yesterday tethered to me as we explored the house and we went outdoors to check out her new back yard.  She is way more comfortable outside than inside, and even then hugs to the corners of the yard if she hears an unfamiliar noise. She allows gentle petting, we brushed her a little bit, and she is drinking water. Maggie will be going to the vet this evening and we will update then. She moves VERY well for a senior gal, did the stairs from the deck to the yard with no problem.

More news to follow on this gentle girl who so deserves a chance to enjoy life as a valued member of a family, instead of a number on a puppy mill roster. Can't wait to see that Golden tail wag!

Updates

Saturday, May 12, 2007

Hi Mary Beth and Art,

Here is the update I promised you on Maggie - now called Mandy. Our sweetest little girl is doing well - baby steps, but definitely going in the right direction. Her first evening with us she was very uneasy with the thunder and roamed the house looking for the safest place to hide. Finally she found it - in the 2 inches of space behind Rolf who was sitting a little forward on a loveseat!  She wedged herself in there for a good hour, and now that is her default safe place. She is still very shy and mistrustful, but she lets us pet her and she loves to be out in our wooded lot (as you told us she would) where she has dug a couple of nice cool holes to hang out in.  Quite the digger!  In the house so far she stays in her safe spot during the day and we bring her upstairs to our room to spend the night on her special pink blanket.  Already she stretches out more on it instead of being in a tightly wound ball. This morning she ate out of her new doggie bowl for the first time!  She is interested in everything that goes on around her - watches, but doesn't yet join in. And we are still waiting for that first wag which will be such a reward. We just love her. I hope you will like the photos I'm attaching, and soon can come to visit her.

Thank you for starting her on the road to happiness.  We will make sure that's all she ever knows from now on.

Hilary and Rolf

The storms rolled in last night and brought more growth with them for Maggie.

Downside: Maggie seemed a little nervous about the storms; she did a very little bit of shaking.

Upside: She walked through the house by herself and came into the TV room, looking for her buddies, and stayed close to us and was accepting pets and hugs.

Funny side: When it came time to go to bed, I could not find Maggie (and really our house is NOT that big:))... Finally found her in the extra bedroom burrowed under all the pillows.

Optimistic side: Maggie is hopefully realizing that the whole house is her "safe" place. Last night for the first time she spent the night sleeping with Jake and Lucy and not hunkered down in her corner!

This sweet girl gets braver every day!!!!

Maggie had a great weekend, and she made lots of progress in the " I am On My Way To Being a Real Golden Girl" department. She is pretty consistently now following the residents out to the yard, still very much more comfortable outside than indoors. We are working on that by taking her with us when we move from room to room so that she can see the whole house is a "safe" place. Maggie joined the Hooligans in a little mischief over the weekend which was fun to see (I did not even mind the clean-up J)!  While I was out enjoying the Spring by buying flowers, all three doggies were celebrating spring with a picnic, only thing is they were celebrating an "all treat" picnic and the living room was their picnic ground!   When I opened the front door I found all three dogs in the living room chewing on boxes and bags, which had until a short while ago contained dog biscuits and small dog cookies. The treat bucket was chewed through and little pieces of plastic littered the house (my money is on Lucy as the team captain and Jakie and Maggie as willing team mates).

Hmmm..New treat bucket….7.00

              More treats……….20.00

              Maggie joining the fun……priceless!!!!

Thankfully the yummy treats from Wing Foot Farm were in a different cabinet…so we still have those yummies to dole out as treats and not as a meal!!!  Maggie continued her silly Golden ways on Sunday, when Anita took Jakie out to brush him and Maggie claimed the comb that was left on the deck, and got close enough for a photo op (the other photo is Maggie enjoying her pink fuzzy blanket and toy from her awesome sponsors!)!

It is so much fun to watch Maggie become a real doggie. The Hooligans really help her get in touch with her inner Golden Retreiver self. Do you have a furry boy or girl at your house that would like to continue Maggie's education in things like "borrowing" stuff left lying around and playing in the yard? She has come a long, long way but still has many "firsts" ahead of her…is your home the place where all the future fun can take place?? E-mail placementatragom [dot] org if you would like to meet Maggie and help her on her way to being the dog she was meant to be.

Maggie had her spay re-check yesterday and spent most of the rest of the day playing in the yard with Lucy and Jake - that's Jakie's back end in the picture :)  Notice that Maggie's tail is NOT between her legs and doesn't she look SOOOO cute with her ears flapping in the spring air??  GO MAGGIE!!

Maggie is looking for a doggie pal for company in her forever home. Do you have a furry brother or sister for Maggie??

Maggie is still a sweetie pie, but still VERY timid and scared. She has a safe place in the house and that is where she is whenever she is out of her kennel. She is eating much better now and I am transitioning her to better food slowly...she is now eating a mix of  her old food and the better food with half a hot dog cut up and tossed in for treats :) She still only eats if no one is in the room with her.

Her crate has been dry for the last week, and she potties outside pretty quickly. We go on a walk every day, (just me and Maggie, no other dogs yet) and she trots along happily and stops to examine EVERYTHING...she really likes to explore and sniff ALL the bushes, fences, puddles, and old wrappers along her path. I tether her to me on walks and have not tried a leash yet.

Last week, we left her out in the yard with the resident dogs and they wanted to come in. She looked so comfortable outside enjoying the sunshine that I decided to leave her there for a bit and let her relax, but about three minutes later she was at the door wanting to come in...HUGE step and we celebrated with pets all around :)

I still keep the slip lead on her all the time out in the yard, but only keep the tether on her if we are just out for a quick " time to do your thing" trip. When she is kenneled or in her safe spot inside she does not have her tether or slip lead on.

We continue to love Maggie more with every day that passes, and will go as slowly as she needs to go, in order that she may reach her full potential as a valued family member for some lucky family.
