Hi everyone.  My name is Abby.  I'm about 1 year old.  I recently moved to Minnesota from Arkansas by way of one of the puppy mill rescue efforts.  Some nice RAGOM volunteers gave me a hug, a bath and a name.  I never had any of these things before so I'm forever grateful.  Thanks RAGOM for saving me.  Now I wear a pretty red collar with a shiny gold RAGOM tag, so I'll never have to worry about being loved again! This past week I had to stay at this nice veterinary clinic in Richfield for a few days until I could get spayed and have a dental done.  Prior to my dental my mouth really hurt.  The dog-tor said I have gingivitis and bad tartar build up.  Now my smile is good as new, if only felt better I could smile.  I have to go back to the dog-tor tomorrow because I started peeing blood today.  My foster Mom and Dad are real worried about me and all my furry foster sisters and brother keep bringing me dog toys and chewies to make me feel better.  In my old living place (which I don't want to ever mention again) I wasn't cared for.  My underside is missing most of its fur due to flea bites.  I also have some scars and scabs all over my body.  I'm pretty underweight and I currently have these nasty things living in me called roundworms.  Foster parents have to give me a second de-wormer next weekend to get rid of them for GOOD!  I'm also on meds for my skin infection from all the nasty bites and irritations.  I had some blood tests done on me last week but the results aren't back yet.  Since I'm from Arkansas and they didn't keep me safe from ticks, it is possible I could have a tick-borne disease, which is still treatable.  Some of my dog friends that traveled with me have these tick diseases and they are doing really well. I also have ear infections in both ears so I"m on meds for them too.  I have had two baths and could still use more.  The good news is I wag my tail ALL the time!  I am a velcro dog and want lots of pets and attention.  I don't ask for much in return. I love to play with toys and walk nice on a leash.  I spent a long time last night laying on foster Dad's feet and then got to sleep in a soft mesh kennel in the bedroom with foster Mom and Dad so I didn't cry or get scared.  I have only had one accident in the house so I'm learning quick.  My foster sister Autumn tells me she was from a puppy mill too and had scars and scabs just like me.  I dream someday I can have a healthy, pretty fur coat like her!  Today my golden foster brother Stetson and I went to the pet store!  Wow!!! I never knew there were so many tasty things out there for us doggies!  Foster Mom and Dad bought two bags of bones and various chewing items.  YUM!  I can't wait. What they don't know is while Dad was picking bones out and had his back to me I snuck a biscuit out of the box and ate it, ha ha ha.  Shhhh....don't tell.  It will be our secret. At the pet store I walked very nice on a leash and met a few people and dogs.  I'm not a typical puppy mill dog, because I"m not scared of everything. Today I also had one of these things called Frosty Paws.  They are SO tasty!  And the cold felt good on my sore mouth.  And then later I saw my foster parents filling these red Kong toys with peanut butter.   MMMM...I've never had that before either but it smells so I good I started to drool.

So if you are looking for a young, loving, velcro golden, then I'm totally your girl.  I will be at the picnic next weekend so come on out and meet me.  Pretty soon I will be healthy and good as new.  Until then I am dreaming of a forever home.  Is that with you?  If so email placementatragom [dot] org  Stay tuned for more updates!

Updates

Saturday, October 13, 2007

Abby went in for a scheduled checkup last week, and her veterinarian ran a blood profile to see how she was doing after being treated for her multiple tick-borne diseases. We found that her platelet count was low. There can be numerous explanations for this. So to rule some of them out, Abby was put back on doxycyclene (strong antibiotic) and we scheduled a followup appointment for her today.

Today Abby got a fresh blood profile and had a urinalysis taken. The good news is that her urine test came back negative, and she has gained a healthy 7 pounds in foster care. The bad news is that her platelet count is really low. Again this could be caused by a number of things, some very minor, some.... could be as bad as a compromised immune system in which case Abby's body isn't able to help her fight off the tick borne diseases. Abby has been referred to a specialist who will need to do special testing to try to determine her underlying condition. She requires a bone marrow biopsy to have an accurate diagnosis. Keep your fingers and paws crossed for Abby girl, and send some prayers and tail wags her way. We will keep everyone updated on Abby's developing condition.

As we are now unsure of Abby's medical status, we are listing her as temporarily unavailable for adoption until we can meet with the specialist and can determine Abby's needs going forward. As her medical bills will be mounting quickly, Abby would love her very own sponsor. Rest assured that Abby will continue getting lots of hugs and good food. She romps and plays and wags and cuddles just like a "normal" dog, now we just need to find out what we need to do to get her completely healthy and if her body is capable of continuing the fight. Just think, this could have been prevented with monthly flea and tick preventative.  Oh that's right...puppy mills don't care.  Check back on ragom.org for further developments on Abby as we find them out.

Well I made it to the RAGOM picnic this past weekend and met lots of nice volunteers. Unfortunately I didn’t find my forever home yet, but I’m still dreaming of them. Foster Mom and Dad said I’ve really come along ways and love having me, so I’m in no hurry. I love to play now and smile all the time. I am still the Velcro dog I always was and foster mom says she has a hard time taking pictures of me because I’m always on the go. I feel so much better now. My fur is starting to turn a little darker and softer because of this yummy food I get and my eyes sparkle. I heard foster Dad say that after this Thursday (which is 2 weeks from my spay) I can have a bath. He said they’d get me all pretty for this RAGOM event called Doggie Palooza that I am going to. How exciting! I have a social calendar!

My favorite things are chew bones and tennis balls. I love to play fetch and will chase tennis balls around for hours. I also really like wrestling with my foster Sister Sierra. When it rained Sierra taught me how to mud wrestle. Foster Mom wasn’t too happy about that but I sure had a good time. I will be going back to the dog-tor sometime early next week for a check-up and follow up blood work to see how my anemia, erlichia, and Rocky Mountain Fever are doing. I'm feeling so much better! If you think you’d like a fun, playful, Velcro girl to spend your days with and a super cuddly girl to spend cool evenings snuggling with, then I’m your girl. Please email placementatragom [dot] org and tell them you want to meet me…Abby girl. Otherwise come out and meet me at Doggie Palooza at Wolfe Park in St. Louis Park this Saturday. I will be there from 10am until approximately 3pm.

TTFN,

Abby

XOXO
