Abby went in for a scheduled checkup last week, and her veterinarian ran a blood profile to see how she was doing after being treated for her multiple tick-borne diseases. We found that her platelet count was low. There can be numerous explanations for this. So to rule some of them out, Abby was put back on doxycyclene (strong antibiotic) and we scheduled a followup appointment for her today.
Today Abby got a fresh blood profile and had a urinalysis taken. The good news is that her urine test came back negative, and she has gained a healthy 7 pounds in foster care. The bad news is that her platelet count is really low. Again this could be caused by a number of things, some very minor, some.... could be as bad as a compromised immune system in which case Abby's body isn't able to help her fight off the tick borne diseases. Abby has been referred to a specialist who will need to do special testing to try to determine her underlying condition. She requires a bone marrow biopsy to have an accurate diagnosis. Keep your fingers and paws crossed for Abby girl, and send some prayers and tail wags her way. We will keep everyone updated on Abby's developing condition.
As we are now unsure of Abby's medical status, we are listing her as temporarily unavailable for adoption until we can meet with the specialist and can determine Abby's needs going forward. As her medical bills will be mounting quickly, Abby would love her very own sponsor. Rest assured that Abby will continue getting lots of hugs and good food. She romps and plays and wags and cuddles just like a "normal" dog, now we just need to find out what we need to do to get her completely healthy and if her body is capable of continuing the fight. Just think, this could have been prevented with monthly flea and tick preventative. Oh that's right...puppy mills don't care. Check back on ragom.org for further developments on Abby as we find them out.
