Alina 08-360

Profile

We met Alina on the evening of Tuesday, August 5; with her sister. She is a very sweet young girl. But very, very shy & very easily intimidated. Alina came from a PM with 3 of her sisters and 1 brother, and some health issues to be dealt with. Alina had round and hook worms (bad), bloody runny stools and weighing at 49 lbs. We're still trying to figure out if her heat cycle is coming in or going out. She also needs to be spayed, but the vet is waiting as she seems so lethargic; she has been wormed once and that went very well. But another round must be done in about 2 weeks. Also Alina still needs to get updated on all her shots, but not until she is feeling better.

Loud noises make her jump and run, she did not know what toys are, yet! She has seemed to like some of the bigger bones in the house, so it's a start. She likes to hide in any corner that she can get her little body into; so we keep her tethered to us during the day and most of the evening. Alina does not like being baby gated in the kitchen as she can (somehow) climb over the baby gate and gets into the rest of the house. So she does like her kennel, and understands the word "kennel up". She likes to steal socks and hides them in her kennel or a corner if she can get away with it.

Alina is like all PM dogs, she did not know what doors are, what a car ride was. So she is learning and most of the time accepting of these things. She will not take any food at all from my hand or fingers.

As I sit here on the floor with her working on this update, she has given me two kisses (licks) on my arm. We are making process and we do love her!!

I believe the worst of her situation is over. Ali quit having diarrhea about 2.5 weeks ago and we still have no defined reason why she was so sick, but it is gone. Ali has even started to gain weight, she now weighes in at 52.6 lbs.. Her hip bones do not protrude out any more, I cannot feel her spine, her ribs you can still find them, but you have to be feeling to find them. Ali has had free roam of the house during the day and at night, with some accidents due to her not wanting to go outside because of her timid fear factor.

Things are looking up for Alina, she is very slowly coming out of her timid shell with us. As she is feeling better she now plays "All Star Wrestling" with her resident dog, Missy. And they have even starting playing a three way wrestling match with 08-497 Zuzu (AKA Princess). It's a real treat when this gets going in the middle of the living room and 08-293 Sunshine (Honey) sits at my side and just watches them. Crazy dogs!!

Ali is still afraid of outside noises or if the neighbor dogs bark, she runs for the door and will not come back to play or potty, and then we have accidents in the house. If there is alot of noise in the kitchen with dishes and pans, she runs and hides. She needs to have a resident dog who will help her thru some of her timidness. She has one very bad habit of jumping up with her front feet at your chest, when you come back from being gone. I'm trying to break her of this bad habit, she gets so excited when someone comes home from school or work and she wants your attention.

Ali has even slept in bed for a night or two. The first night in bed she slept on my king size pillow all night long and enjoyed it. She was just a little snuggle puppy all night. Ali will not climb into bed herself, but gets a butt lift in. She has also learned to get up onto the couch. I was making dinner and Missy (resident dog) got on the couch to look out front window, so Ali decided to look out too. She just hopped up and put her front legs on the back of the couch and looked out the window, the way dogs do. She was so cute and proud of herself.

Ali's "piggy" kennel

It's been a rough month so far with Alina. She has been so sick with throwing up and diarrhea with blood and no reason why. Ali was wormed and stools have been checked twice for the possiblily of more worms, but everything comes back negative. So that is good news. Ali was spayed on August 20 and eating like a horse. But on Labor Day weekend the diarrhea started for no reason; other dogs in the house are just fine. On September 3rd Ali had staples removed from her incision of spaying and the vet put her on diarrhea meds and a special food for her GI system. We weighed Ali and she has lost 4 lbs since being spayed. I have tried lots of rice and a little hamburger and no good results. We are into the vet about once a week and on the phone at least 2 or 3 times a week with the vet. Something is going on in her system but what, more to come as results come forward.

As far as Ali being so very shy and timid, this seems to be getting somewhat better, but very slow going forward. She still jumps and runs when dogs bark, a plane flys over the house, any noise that may come from a neighbor's home. Trust is very hard to come by for her. Sometimes Ali will take food from my hand and most of the time she will not. She has become very attached to me, she does a happy dance when I come home in the afternoon and I get high 5's with her paw in the air. She is so very cute. Sometimes she will follow her resident sister in the back yard and most of the time she does not. She has been tethered to the bed at night, as she likes to do her "business" in the living room. So she has been waking me up about half way thru the night to go out. Last week Ali started putting her two front feet on the bed to wake me up and giving kisses. During the day she is in her crate and does very well; Ali does not like baby gates at all. As you can see from her most recent pictures, toys are still on the top of her list. Every time Ali goes outside she always takes one of the stuffed toys with her.

We all love her very much and wish that she could feel better. Love for now from FM and Ali.

Bunny or bone?

Ali chewing on bone

Alina is finally becoming a much more active dog -- she will play with stuffed squeaky toys, loves to chew on bones. She has playful moments and then goes-in-a-corner-and-hides moment, but we’re working on keeping the playful side to stay out.

On August 20 Alina was taken in to be spayed. While under for her spay, the vets also noticed that Alina's right front leg is very thick at one point. So they x-rayed that, and found that her leg had been broken at some point in her young life. People may wonder why we all love our fosters so much, for being only 20 months old Alina has been through a lot of pain.

Today Alina will come home and be treated like the young princess that she is and she needs a mother’s loving touch and care. She can really start living the golden life, that all golden's should get a chance to live.
