Angel 12-077

Profile

Our beautiful Angel arrived at our rural Rochester home on Wednesday, March 7, to become a member of the RAGOM family. Angel is a 5-6 year old spayed medium-sized GR with a beautiful reddish gold wavy coat, creamy feathering on her back legs and a plumy tail. She tolerated her bath well and loves to be brushed. Angel and our spoiled resident dog are now getting along fine. He usually does not appreciate the fact that he has to share attention, toys and food with a foster dog. Our two inside cats have gotten used to Angel and are spending more time on the main floor—their only problem with her is that she tries to clean them up too much by licking their face.

Angel’s vet exam deemed her healthy except for several items needing attention: a mild ear infection which now appears to be gone, a dental cleaning might be in her future, and the need to shed some pounds. Because Angel arrived without any health records, her shots have been updated but she needs to go back in three weeks for a distemper combo booster. Her heartworm test was negative!! She will very willingly let you work with her ears for cleaning and drops. Angel has been switched to a high quality grain-free food supplemented with a cup of cooked carrots morning and night in order to help her lose weight. Angel and I are walking around the perimeter of our acreage 4-5 times a day to give her more exercise.

All I can say about Angel is that she is one awesome dog! She has had free roam of the house since her second day here, can be left in the house without anything being disturbed, has never had an accident in the house, leaves the cats alone, and will not stray far from your side. She readily comes when you call her name. Angel came with a harness and walks well with that and also a flat collar. After the initial bucking, she will tolerate the Gentle Leader. She has met dogs of all sizes and does well with the sniffing-smelling program—she likes to meet them slowly. She met one young dog who pawed and jumped in her face which she did not appreciate. She met my 7 and 10-year-old grandchildren and also several smaller children without any problems. Angel would make a great addition to any household—she provides a great deal of love and companionship to us. She is a quiet, happy girl who loves to be near her people. Angel will need a family committed to helping her lose those extra pounds and providing the exercise that goes along with that—plus all the love you can give!

Angel has been with us for almost a month and is doing extremely well. She is now completely updated on her shots, F/T preventive and heartworm medication. Angel was weighed at the vet’s office last week and had lost 3 pounds—hopefully by this week it will be 4 pounds!! She met a younger golden at the vet’s office and did the appropriate sniffing/smelling and got along fine with him. She likes to be outdoors with us and does not wander/bolt off. She has won the cautious cat over now so Rascal freely moves about the house. Angel had an opportunity to meet one of the outside cats that did not run from her. She was curious about her, smelled her over, but did not hurt her. She has a funny habit of lying right up close to the wall or sofa for her nap. It doesn’t look very comfortable at all.

We had our family Easter celebration last Sunday with 9 adults and 7 children, ages 2-14. Angel handled all the commotion very well and got her share of pets. We also babysat the 2 year-old who was deathly afraid of dogs several times last week. By the end of the first day, she was calling Angel to her and petting her very gently. The second day she arrived, she had no fear of Angel at all although she still is uncertain about our dog. Angel has the typical golden personality and has the golden nudge down to a fine art—you stop petting and she starts nudging your hand for more. This week she has started to play with rope toys but proceeds to use them as a chew toy. She is not ball goofy like some goldens although she will occasionally engage in trying to get the ball away from Champ. Angel sleeps in our bedroom on either the dog bed or on the floor next to our bed. She is a very mellow, kind and gentle girl who will make someone a great companion. She is usually where you are but I wouldn’t call her needy—she just enjoys her people.

Our Angel “baby” has settled in nicely to our routine. Angel eats her diet of dry dog food and cooked carrots with gusto so hopefully she will have lost a pound or two—we’ll weigh her at the vet on Thursday when she gets her distemper combo booster. She has gotten along beautifully with the resident dog who is usually rather snarky with the foster the first week or two but he enjoys her company. She does not seem to be very toy-oriented but will catch and bring a tennis ball to you for short periods. I have caught her chewing on a nylabone several times. Angel’s biggest love, I think, is to just be where you are. At night she sleeps on one of the dog beds in the bedroom or we often find her on the laminate floor in the hallway where it may be cooler. She has had free roam from the second day here—nothing is ever disturbed while we are gone.

For awhile I thought we had the perfect “Angel” but she did want to play with my hands when I had my garden gloves on—she did not bite or even get a hold of them but perhaps that was how the children in her previous home played with her. Angel loves children but probably would knock a toddler over with her exuberant little dance when you pick up her leash to go outside or when she is welcoming you at the door. She has a funny little quirk of always making grass angels before we start our walk. Once she has completed that maneuver, she will walk nicely with a flat collar and does quite well with the Gentle Leader after a few moments of trying to paw it off. Angel has been helping in the yard this week—once she is settled into her new home, I do not believe she would run away. She ran loose with a long rope attached to her collar but didn’t get more than 10-12 feet away from me. As I moved from one flower bed to another, she just followed and picked a nice shady spot to watch me work. Angel would be a treasure in any home as she gets along with the cats (occasionally needs to be told to “leave them alone”), likes slow introductions to new dogs or could be an only dog, loves children and loves, loves, loves her people. She is a super easy foster!!
