After more medical investigation, it was determined that Anna needed surgery to get spayed and to remove her enlarged spleen and a growth on her adrenal gland. She seemed to have gotten through the surgery well, but about 24 hours later, she developed blood clots in her lungs. This morning, we had to help her over the Rainbow Bridge.

Our thoughts are with her prospective adopters. Although she was not in the RAGOM family long, at least in her last few weeks, she felt loved and cherished by everyone she met and those who followed her story.

Anna is a 12-year-old Golden Retriever mix that was abandoned and rescued from the pound by a Good Samaritan. Anna has the typical white face of a senior and such a gentle, calm manner.

She always wants to be with her humans and will reward you with unending love. I cannot emphasize enough how affectionate Anna is. If she can’t do her Golden lean, she will sit next to you staring. If that doesn’t work, the left paw comes up on your lap.

Anna is very well-behaved.  She has free roam of the house, has had no accidents, and exhibits no inappropriate behavior like chewing. She gets along with other dogs, but cats are unknown.

She is attached to her dog bed and sleeps in it at night. She seems to understand what "no" means and is beginning to respond to her name of Anna that was given to her at the pound.

Anna uses a tie-out to do her business, but always wants to come back in immediately and be with her humans. She does well in the car once given a helpful nudge up into the back seat.

Here are more details on what we have learned about her in the last week and a half.

  1. Her vision is good with only small cataracts.
  2. She has arthritis in her spine and shoulder, so she moves around slowly. To help with this, she takes Rimadyl twice a day. Anna will need a home with no more than 2-3 steps, and carpet is preferred.
  3. Anna has some fatty tumors that are not a concern. She does have one mammary tumor, but the vet felt it should not be removed as it has been there quite a while without spreading.
  4. The poor girl weighs 97 lbs and needs to lose at least 15 lbs. She is now on diet food.
  5. She is sensitive to being petted on her back end and may snap if she feels the intrusion is too much. When Anna was sprung from the pound, she had so many mats it was required to shave large areas, which could still be strong in her memory. Her reaction could also be pain-related. Whatever the cause of her snapping might be, we are noting that her home should not have small children. We will continue to try to understand the parameters around this behavior.
