Augie (Rusty 08-610)

Profile

Meet Rusty. He is a beautiful Golden mix, possibly mixed with yellow lab according to the vet's best guess. He is estimated to be around one year old. He is an UTD, neutered, healthy boy who weighs in at a whopping 47 lbs which is a great weight for his size. He came all the way from Kentucky along with three other dogs, Chance, Emmi and Scarlet. He was a stray in a very full shelter and his time was up. We've only had him for a day but this is what we know so far.

  • He is a great passenger in the car.
  • He is super friendly, getting along great with everyone he meets including our resident male dog.
  • He walks wonderfully with the Gentle Leader.
  • He tolerates grooming quite well.
  • He sleeps quietly in his crate all night long.
  • He is very alert and curious.

Rusty was extremely stinky so he has had two baths already. I brushed him, cleaned his ears and clipped his nails with no complaints from him. He hasn't had any accidents in the house so far. He did test positive for worms so he will be on meds for the next five days to clear those up. His ears were very dirty and possibly infected so we will keep them clean and he will go in for a re-check in two weeks when he is due for his booster shots. More to come as we get to know this sweet, happy boy.

Just a quick note to let you know how good Rusty is with the puppy, Teddy 09-015. Rusty makes an excellent big brother. They play so well together. Notice the same beautiful honey blonde fur. Rusty lost his playmate today. Teddy the puppy was adopted, hooray for Teddy.

Rusty has discovered that he absolutely loves toys. He will go to the dog toy basket and pick out his favorites. If he doesn't have someone to play with he will toss the toy into the air and catch it over and over again.

Rusty is a young boy full of puppy energy so he does need supervision and training. Meaning anything is a potential toy to him. Rusty's ideal family would have kids to play fetch with him and take him for regular walks. He would be fine with or without another dog. He would really benefit from some formal obedience training as well. Rusty is meeting a family next week so keep your fingers crossed.

Rusty continues to do great in his foster home.  Still no accidents so we can go ahead and officially call him housetrained.  He is surprisingly mellow for such a young dog. He walks like a pro on a leash.  He stays at my left side and keeps pace with me perfectly.  It must come natural to him because I know he hasn't had any training.  He didn't know how to sit or even know his name when he first came here.  Doorways make him nervous but he is getting better about them.

He got loose this morning and came right back so we know he doesn't want to run.  He just wants to be near and please his people.  Rusty is learning how to play and how wonderful toys and bones are.  He is content to lay on the office floor chewing a toy or bone while I'm working.  He sleeps quietly in his crate all night long.  In fact Rusty rarely barks at all.

Rusty is a great dog.  He's a super easy foster and a wonderful houseguest.  If you would like to meet Rusty please contact placementatragom [dot] org (.)
