9/20/07: BIG NEWS—the Bailey Girl is moving to a new foster home tomorrow. She, and they, are very excited. She will be the one and only pet friend… she is thinking “Oh yea!!! I am the Queen!!!”. Check in next week and see how things are going. In preparation for her move, I brought her home to give her a bath, and for her and Jackson to have one more romp in the yard. I bought her favorite treats and a Kong to send with her so she will have some of her favorite things. She was very excited to see me and jumped right in the car. The kennel folks are sad to see her go, mom said; her daughter (age 13) asked if they could keep her. Her daughter has been walking her all summer and has really developed a relationship with her. This warmed my heart; I know how wonderful this girl is and know they have seen this as well. Wishing Bailey girl and her new foster family the very best :)

I had a great Christmas and am enjoying all of my new presents. I loved unwrapping and ripped every shred of wrapping paper into tiny bits just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I love my new snowman—it had three squeakers! I don’t know where my aunt and uncle got it, but it is really well made. It took me a week to pop all those squeakers and I even had to pull snowman’s leg off to get to one of them. Normally it just takes me a minute to silence the squeaking. Sigh. Maybe I am just getting old. I also got a stuffed Santa and penguin but they don’t make any noise. Foster mom also got me a new red snowflake coat. It is the best. I have lost some weight lately and was shivering out on our walks. Now am I nice and toasty—and I have to say I look really cute in it. I even saw another dog eyeing me the other day but I made sure he knew I wasn’t interested.

Foster mom is trying to get me to put some weight back on but I just don’t feel like eating some days. In addition to my dog food she has been giving me pumpkin. Some nice RAGOM people suggested it. At first I wanted nothing to do with it even though normally I am not a picky eater. Finally she put it on some bread and fed it to me and I discovered that I love it. I think it is my new favorite food.

I love fall. The cooler weather brings out all of my puppy energy. In most ways I still feel like a young pup, but I am noticing my age in a little bit. The other day, I was riding in the car and there was a man at bus stop. He was standing with a backpack by his feet, listening to his iPod. I was so sure that the red and black pack was another dog and that iPod cord was its leash. Foster mom tried to tell me that it wasn’t a dog, but I growled at it anyway just to make sure. I wonder if they make glasses for dogs?

I am sharing a picture that foster aunt sent of me at the cabin this summer. She is a much better photographer than foster mom. Foster mom has been trying to capture me in action for years without much success.

I think I had the best weekend of my life.  I had so much fun up at foster grandparent’s cabin.  The lake is definitely my most favorite place to be.  I spent hours diving off the dock and retrieving a tennis ball.  When they wouldn’t throw it for me any longer (for fear I might pass out), I swam laps around the boat and dock to amuse myself.  There was no way I was going to waste time resting.  Foster uncle and I swam out to a swim platform together.   I was literally swimming circles around him—I think he was a bit embarrassed.  Once we got to the platform, he hoisted me up and I got to play with all the kids.  I love being able to join in the fun.

I am feeling very inspired by the Olympics and am thinking that I may just want to work toward participating in the 2014 games.  I am all set with my helmet and now just need to pick a sport.

Bailey

I am thinking that the bobsled may be a good choice.  Riding in a car with my head out the window—what dog wouldn’t love that?  Snowboarding looks like it would be fun, but I think I would get too distracted and would be tempted to stop and eat snow, which is one of my favorite pastimes.

Then there is always the Summer Games, but those probably wouldn’t involve my snazzy helmet.  Hurdles come to mind.  I am very good at jumping and can leap the laundry basket with plenty of room to spare.  I would be a good sprinter too, but am getting a bit up there in years and don’t have the endurance I once had.  Swimming is also a possibility as I love that.  I only know one stroke though.  Oh, and diving.  I can dive very far off the dock.  Mastering the flips might be a bit challenging though.  So many possibilities!

I had better go find foster mom and prance until she takes me for my walk.  I think I am going to have to push her to go further than two miles though now that I am in training.  Plus, both she and I are looking a little thick around the middle.  Now, eating…why hasn’t anyone made that an Olympic sport?   I’d love training for that.

As you can see, foster mom is a bit delinquent in getting my Christmas pictures posted.  Something about them being on foster sister’s camera and not knowing where it is.  As you can see by the bag on my head, I had a little bit of a problem with one of them.

Not too much new with me to report.  I am getting tired of these very icy roads.  Foster mom keeps telling me to slow down.  I guess she doesn’t have as good of balance as I do since she only has two paws.  I love all the snow though.  Foster mom limits my water intake so I don’t have accidents.  I try to show her by eating as much snow as possible when we walk.  I have it down to a science—step, step, eat, step, step, eat.  It doesn’t slow me down one bit.

Sorry I am a bit slow at getting my Halloween picture posted.

 Bailey

Foster brother dressed me up.  I am not sure who or what I am supposed to be, but wore my costume all night with pride.   Foster mom put me in my kennel for part of the night.  The doorbell kept ringing, but I never bark at the doorbell when I am in my kennel.  After awhile she let me out and let me look at who was coming to my door.  Lots of strange looking people, that’s who.  A couple kids let me look in their bags, but none of them were nice enough to share.  Foster mom shared, but not on purpose.  She dropped this red gummy thing on the floor.  It tasted terrible and burned my mouth.  I think she said it was a hot tamale.  I’ve been known to eat anything, but I have to draw the line someplace.

Hope you all had a good Halloween.  It’s hard to believe that it is almost Thanksgiving.  Yum… turkey…and it doesn’t burn my mouth.

I have been having a great summer and haven't had much time to write.

A few weeks ago, we had visitors at our house from South Carolina.  They had 3 kids that kept me very busy.  They had me doing tricks from morning until night.  I don't think I have ever sat, shook hands, or rolled over that much.  I loved all the attention, and even rolled over without making a fuss.  Normally I refuse to roll over until I know that I going to get a treat for it.  Connor, who is 9 years old, told me that he wished he could take me home since his dogs are stupid and don't know how to do anythiing.

Then last week I got to go to my grandparent's cabin.  I think it is the best place in the world.  One morning I got tired of waiting for someone to take me swimming, so I opened the screen door with my paw.  Off to the lake I headed.  I was just about to jump in when foster mom called me back.  I was tempted to make a break for it, but being a good listener, I ran back to the cabin.  Foster mom was very impressed and took me swimming a short while later.  I included a picture of me going after my ball.

I am sad that summer is coming to an end but the cooler weather makes for good walks.  Soemtimes, I can even convince foster mom to go an extra few blocks.

I don’t have much new to report with Bailey girl. As long as she gets her daily walk, she is happy as a clam. My teenage children have been trying my patience lately and I’ve told Bailey she is my easiest child right now. Her not liking other dogs is a minor inconvenience in the big scheme of things—you just bring a couple of treats along and have a good grip on the leash and you're all set.

I like snow but this is getting a little ridiculous.  I know it is still February but I am ready for it to be warm—check out my new spring look!

Not much new to report, so I thought I’d remind you of some of the finer points about myself:

  • I do not like other dogs or cats but am working hard to be calm when I come around them.
  • I have a lot of energy for a gal my age but am remarkably calm if I get a daily walk.
  • I have a lot of puppy playfulness still in me and love to swim, play fetch, and be a big goof.
  • I know all of my commands.  I will remain in a “stay” even if you leave the room and I have food in front of me.
  • I do fine when small children come visit but would do better in a house that doesn’t have any little ones around full time.

Enough about me…cross your fingers that we get the spring I am hoping for soon.

Sorry for being so delinquent in my post, my foster mom wouldn’t let me use her computer. I had a very good Christmas. Santa brought me 2 stuffed animals—a reindeer and a kitty cat. One day I started sneezing a lot and my foster mom said that I must be allergic to cats J . I must have been a really good dog because Santa also brought me a big bone!! I am most proud of my bone and like to show it off to everyone many times a day. I also like to do sort of a victory lap around the house with it. I was good about saving it for a rainy day, and today must have been that day (even though there was no rain) since I managed to snarf down half of it after carrying it around for more than a week.

I am glad to have my schedule back to normal after the holidays.  I didn’t like everyone coming and going at different times but coped ok. One day my foster family came home real late and I insisted that I eat dinner again even though the neighbor boy fed me earlier. I wasn’t trying to be sneaky (well, maybe a little), but I just got confused about what time it was. I guess the extra food made up for them messing with my schedule.

Bailey loves all the snow we are getting.  She loves to tunnel through the snow with her nose, roll around in it, and she even likes to eat it.  The cold weather outside doesn’t seem to bother her one bit and she is itching to go for her walk every morning.  Inside the house, it is another story.  The warmer she is the better.  She loves to have someone cover her up with a blanket or to lay by the fire.  Yesterday morning we woke up to find the house a nippy 54 degrees.  It turns out our gas meter was stuck and it wasn’t allowing any gas to flow into the house.  We set up some space heaters, including an oscillating heater we borrowed from the neighbors.  Bailey parked herself in front of that heater and nothing would get her to move.  I think she was imagining herself on a tropical vacation.  After a few hours, the gas was fixed, much to Bailey’s chagrin, and her heater was returned.

I think I mentioned awhile back that Bailey likes to sleep with her paws crossed like a pretzel.  I finally was able to get a picture.  I also included a picture of her cuddled up in her blanket.

Bailey decided to write a somewhat belated Halloween message;

Last year I was pretty much the Halloween Scrooge; which is kind of ironic since my nickname is Boo Boo. I wanted nothing to do with a costume and if anyone dared to try to put something on me, I’d immediately bite it off.

This year I figured that everyone makes such a fuss over the holiday, that maybe I’d just relax a little bit and give it a chance. I allowed everyone to dress me up in a variety of outfits and as long as nothing was put on my head, it was kind of fun. At one point, they tied a ribbon around my paw. I thought that meant that it was injured and I couldn’t use it and tried to hobble along on 3 paws. I was relieved when they took the ribbon off and I found out I really have 4 good paws.

My human sister had a Halloween party and I included pictures of some of my costume choices for the party. It was a hard decision, but I ended up choosing to be a ballerina since I like to jump. The party was a blast, I got a lot of attention, and I kept my costume on the whole time! During the party, my human brother gave me my dog food on a pretty pumpkin plate and I got to eat in the kitchen. Eating in the kitchen with everyone else was great, but I don’t really understand the fancy plate thing since my dog food still tasted like dog food. Sometimes humans can be very silly.

Bailey decided she was going to write today:

My idea of a fun walk is pulling foster mom’s arm off, sniffing everything in sight, and marking every single yard.  For some reason, foster mom does not share my sentiments and she has been working hard to keep me “under control”.  Boy, you would think she was the senior citizen instead of me.  Well, foster mom must be winning out, because yesterday a woman I have never seen before told me what a good walker I am!  I was so surprised and very proud.  Not to brag or anything, but foster mom has never been told how nicely she walks.

Then today, foster mom wants to take a fall picture of me for the website.  Boy, do I know how the kids feel when she wants to take their Christmas card picture.  First of all the sun was in my eyes, then I had to itch myself, then I got bored and looked at ground for something interesting to do, and finally I decided to cooperate a little bit (or so she thinks, I was actually just checking out if anything interesting was going on at the neighbor’s house).

One of the "treasures" we brought home from the State Fair this year was a Sun Country Airlines Frisbee.  Bailey caught a glimpse of the Frisbee and was most excited.  We had been trying to figure out where we could play with her and finally came up with a secluded field by the local junior high.  Bailey was in her glory chasing the Frisbee.  The higher she could jump, the happier she was.  As you can see from the picture, the Frisbee didn't fair too well and I think we'll need to invest in a high quality dog Frisbee next time around.

Bailey has been with us for close to a year.  As I reflect back on the past year, I can honestly say that we’ve had some difficult days but we’ve come a long way.  Bailey still freaks out some of the time when we see other dogs but for the most part, she is much less anxious and much more trusting.  If I had to describe Bailey in one word it wouldn’t be “aggressive” or difficult”, it would be “joy”.  We all have our short-comings, and Bailey helps us remember that despite our short-comings, we all can be loved.

To summarize what we have learned about Bailey:

  • She is a real sweetheart of a dog and a great companion.
  • She has lots of personality and makes us laugh.
  • She is a beautiful dog who is very athletic.
  • She is very smart and well trained—she knows sit, down, shake, roll-over (will only do this one for treats), stay (you can leave the room and she won't break her stay even if food is involved!), come, and go lay down.
  • She also knows about 20 other words with food, walk, and ride being her favorites.

These are things Bailey needs in her forever home:

  • No other dogs or cats.
  • Dog savvy owner who is able to handle her around other dogs.
  • Someone who can exercise her regularly.  She calms down nicely with even a 15 minute walk.
  • Kids are fine but Bailey may be a bit excitable for real small ones.
  • Fence is optional but note that Bailey cannot be left on an invisible fence and we speculate that she could jump a standard chain link fence.

All in all Bailey really is a great dog; just one that doesn’t like other dogs.  Be sure to e-mail placementatragom [dot] org if you think I might be the perfect dog for your family!

School started back up this week and I think Bailey missed having kids around.  She spent more time than usual at her favorite spot--watching out the front window.  I keep telling her to be patient; that school activities will be starting soon which means lots of trips to school to pick up kids.  Bailey loves of her role as assistant chauffer and I enjoy the company.  Band will also start up soon and my son Nathan is notorious for forgetting his instrument.  Lucky for Bailey his school is conveniently located by a lake so after we drop off his instrument she gets to go for a walk around the lake.  Band is later in the day so we can wait until peak dog-walking time is over and we can often walk without running into any other dogs.  Sometimes I think she and Nathan have a secret pact and he forgets his instrument on purpose.

The first few days after returning from being boarded, Bailey tried to get out of going into her kennel.  Normally you can tell her to “kennel” from anywhere in the house and she’ll go to the laundry room, open the door with her nose, and climb in her kennel.  She will even put herself to bed if we are staying up later than normal.  But after her “vacation” she pretended not to hear us, would give us a “what is a kennel?” look or hide in the corner (see the picture of her hiding and peeking)—you know the old, if I can’t see you, you can’t see me.   Each day has gotten a bit better and she now is going into her kennel just fine.  I’ve also included some pictures we took this afternoon outside.  We are loving this weather and hoping that it continues long into the fall!

Bailey got to take another trip to the cabin.  As you can see from the lake picture, that Bailey loves nothing more than to be in the water.  Anytime I would make her take a break, she would lay with her head on the deck railing and pout.

I’ve also included a picture that one of the kids must have taken this morning. Hmmm… swimming in the lake versus school work—you decide which looks like more fun.  I guess Bailey isn’t much different that the rest of my kids.

Bailey had a great 4th of July. We took her to my parentʼs cabin which I think has become her favorite place. She couldnʼt get enough of the water and would have swum all day if I would have let her. I tried to get a picture of her flying off the dock but my camera wasnʼt fast enough (or Iʼm not a good enough photographer), so you will have to settle for a couple of pictures of her in the water. She was a great house guest and stayed out on an enclosed deck or in her kennel without whining and completely ignored the fireworks. The only time she barked was when I tried to make her take a break from swimming.

This subzero weather hasn't seemed to bother Bailey one bit and we've been braving the elements and walking for as long as I can stand it. Inside however, Bailey loves to curl up by the fireplace or lay in her bed covered with a blanket (we don't spoil her at all). My daughter noticed that she loves to be warm and comfortable and said we need to buy her a doggie sweater. My suggestion for her to knit one was met with much laughter and next thing I know, Bailey is sporting a new sweater--one from her closet that she doesn't like much. Other than not be able to walk very well, Bailey seemed to like having it on which is definately a change from when we tried to dress her up for Halloween. I've included a picture, but it doesn't really demonstrate just how cute she looked as Bailey isn't one to show her best stuff to the camera.

I think Bailey likes Christmas.  She had a great time cleaning the floor with all my holiday cooking and baking.  She is not at all discriminating and will eat anything I drop.  You name it—caramels, marshmallows, pineapple, even potato peels—she snarfs them all down.  She also thinks presents are great, despite getting a gift bag stuck on her head.  She proudly ran around the house showing off her new stuffed animal, but her favorite present by far was her new bed I ordered from Costco.  It’s big enough for both kids to fit in, which they did one day while watching a movie.  Bailey was not all happy about sharing her bed and came over to me and stomped her foot and growled.  I told them to move and she promptly regained her spot in the bed and shot them a victorious smile.   We’ve been teasing Bailey that her New Year’s resolution is to start getting along with other dogs.  We are 10 hours in to the New Year and she has managed to keep her resolution so far!  (The fact that she hasn’t seen any dogs yet hasn’t hurt any either).  Let's hope the trend continues.

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Bailey continues to do very well at our house.  She still is pretty puppyish for her age and loves to play catch with what once was a stuffed duck.   She also loves belly scratches and to be near people.

I baby-sit a 2 year old one morning a week and Bailey has done well with the little boy.  She likes to give him kisses, but if I tell her to go lay down, she does.  I also took her to a garage sale down the street where a 3 year old girl showered her with kisses.  Bailey just stood there quietly, soaking up the attention.  While she has done well in these situations, she does have a strong, excitable tail, so a home with real small children may not be ideal.

We are continuing to work on her aggression towards other dogs.  We have changed our walk route to a less dog-intensive one which has made both of us happier.  She is doing much better with dogs that are out in their yards.  Dogs on leashes are still a hit or miss.  Sometimes she hardly flinches as we pass while other times I need a good strong grip.  Many people have suggested having her sit and stay until the dog passes, but this seems to agitate Bailey more and she starts to bite the leash.  I find that to keep on walking works best, and if she is still worked up after the dog passes, then we sit and regroup.

If there is anyone out there who lives in a pet-free house and it looking for a great dog—Bailey is it!
