My name is Pallas and I am new to the RAGOM family as of Sunday January 15, 2012. I made a VERY long trip to the Twin Cities from Altus, Oklahoma where I had been staying in a shelter. My "time was up" and I was going to be euthanized when RAGOM stepped in to save my life! I am so VERY thankful!!!

Let me tell you a little about me. I am a Golden Retriever mix. People tell me I look either 1/2 chocolate lab, or maybe Chesapeake Bay Retriever if you look deep into my eyes. I have a really cool look about me. The shelter listed me at about 2 years old, but the vet thinks I am barely over 1 year old since my teeth still have some of that milky white to them and are so clean and shiney. Check out a side picture of me.

RAGOM does not have any information on my background, so they don't know if I lived with kids, other dogs, cats or what. I am very comfortable in a house, so FM is sure I was an inside dog.

I am a SUPER playful girl with other dogs and have LOVED all of the dogs I have met in my foster home and some new friends that come to visit. You can see me here in action right after I arrived in town. http://photobucket.com/pallas11-436 The pup I am playing with here is 4 1/2 months old. I was really good with her. I love to run and chase in the yard too and will playbow and engage every dog here.

Not only do I love other dogs, I totally love humans! After spending time in that shelter, I am so happy to be in a house and have people to pet me and talk to me. FM thinks I am trying to make up for lost time right now as I want to be by her all the time if I am not playing with the others. She says I have the Golden Retriever nudge down pat...and then some!

I have been eating my meals right alongside of my foster-sisters and have no issues. I don't even try to get in their bowls when I finish first. We can all drink water at the same time too and take treats very nicely. FM has not seen any resource guarding (toys or food) with me. I haven't picked up anything that is not "dog approved" and FM leaves shoes lying around just to test us! I'm just a loveable, playful gal who is thankful to be where I am right now and am showing my gratitude!

I am TOTALLY crate trained to and do not make a peep when I am in there, even when FM comes to let me out after work. I just sit patiently and thump my tail a bit so she doesn't forget about me because I don't bark in there. As for barking outside, FM finally heard me bark when I got startled when the neighbor dropped a bunch of really heavy stuff in the trash. It was dark out, so that didn't help. I did continue to give little short under-the-breath "woofs" to make sure the neighbor knew I was watching him. Over the last couple of nights, I am getting more used to being outside at night with my foster-sisters. They just run around playing so I guess there's nothing to be afraid of.

When I got here, I was afraid of going down a full flight of stairs. FM thinks maybe I did not have a basement where I lived. But my foster-sisters taught me how to do them the second night I was here. By the third night, I was a pro at them. It's kind fun just to race up and down them too!

Some things that I need work on are learning not to jump up to get attention and to not counter surf. FM says I am making really good progress on both of these this week. I am so FOOD motivated, that training me should be easy, because I really want to please people too.

As for the pertinent medical information, here are the stats.

  • Age: Just over 1 year old
  • Weight: 64 pounds (very healthy weight)
  • Coat: Short, thick and soft. More brown on face and retriever red tones on body
  • Update-to-date on all vaccinations
  • Well dog check: Very good health.
  • Heartworm Negative
  • On Frontline for fleas and ticks
  • I am microchipped
  • Fecal results showed I have Giardia so I am currently on meds for that and will be finished with those Saturday, then will need a recheck in another week.
  • I am not spayed yet, so that needs to be completed before I can be adopted.

So if you are looking for a young healthy super playful gal to add to your life that will love you unconditionally, let your placement advisor know. I would really be beneficial in helping another dog burn off that winter energy!

Updates

Pallas has completely mastered “ringing the bell” to let us know she needs to go outside to tend to business. In fact FB will come running from the other room when he hears Pallas ring the bell so he doesn’t miss out on a chance to go outside. We consider Pallas 100% potty trained, she has not had an accident in the house for several weeks, how cool is that!!!

As all dogs do, Pallas LOVES routine and slips into routines very easily, unless of course she would prefer not to as in the case of using her crate at night time. We used the crate at nighttime very regularly when Pallas came to us. However, over the last few weeks, Pallas has decided she prefers to sleep in the human bed, so after ‘last call’ to go outside and take care of business, Pallas will hightail it through the house and up on the bed and stretch out all nice and comfortable like. Then of course when she turns her beautiful amber eyes your way, begging to stay in the bed instead of the crate, who can resist?

Check out the pictures of Pallas napping ON FB. FM thinks she wants to know the second FB is up and available for play…… FD of course always sees the best and thinks she just wanted to cuddle, guess we will never know for sure, but it sure is cute.

Pallas continues to make good progress learning manners both with people and dogs. She has had the opportunity to meet several new dogs and has done very well in meeting all types of dogs. Pallas’s FB has been very helpful in teaching Pallas when it is enough play time and nap time instead. FB would say Pallas has a little ways to go but is showing great promise.

Recently FM and FD have experimented with allowing Pallas to have free roam when they are away. We started with short spans and have now progressed to as long as 8 eight hours alone and both Pallas and FB have done very well. Way to go Pallas!

Pallas thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and dogs at both the Chuck and Don’s and Petco events.  At the last event Pallas was able to play a little with a past foster friend (Bailey in earlier Pallas videos), Bailey has been adopted but came to support the event and Pallas was really glad to see her.  Pallas enjoys all the activity that goes along with these events and is quite the lady when she can convince anyone to pet her, she is especially fond of having her neck scratched.

Here are a couple of pics from the Petco event this past weekend.  How can anyone resist this sweetheart when you look deep into her eyes in the 2nd pic, she is calling your nameJ, can you hear her?

We have discovered through the help of Mother Nature that Pallas does not suffer from storm anxiety.  The recent storm that moved through our area was centered right above our house and with the windows we had opened you could experience all the lightning and thunder first hand.  Pallas was very interested in what was happening outdoors but did not show any anxiety even with the continued flash of lightning and very loud thunder.

Pallas is making excellent progress on respecting her FM and FD possessions.  Recently, FM caught her snatching up a sock and trotting off with it.  When FM called her name she stopped and FM said, no, drop it, Pallas dropped the sock and went off to play with dog toys.  FM left the sock there for awhile and while Pallas did glance at it as she walked by she did not try to pick it up again. Way to go Pallas!!

And lastly, Pallas continues to wow us with how smart she is.  FD worked with Pallas for only 2 days and she caught on how to ‘ring the bell’ to signal she needs to go outside.  This is something new we tried with Pallas and had not trained our resident golden to ring the bell.  So Pallas was able to catch on to how to communicate via the bell just from FD working with her.

Pallas is making great progress with learning to sit and wait before going in and out when the door opens.  We do not have a yard and take both our resident dog and Pallas outside on a leash.  However, we need to take them out one at a time which can be hectic at the door while trying to get them on the leash.  Pallas will sit and wait on command until it is her turn and then wait until you release her to go in and out.

At eating time we have also been working on teaching Pallas to wait by where her dish will be until we have prepared her meal and set it down in place.  She will wait until we release her before going to her dish to eat.  On occasion she will wander into the kitchen area during meal prep time and with FM or FD simply pointing her away she will run back to her spot and sit and wait.  She is making great progress on this as well as not eating FB meals if he does not eat his right away.  At first we would pick up FB’s dish but in the last 3-4 days have been experimenting with leaving it down for him and teaching Pallas she can only eat hers and not touch FB dish.  Pallas has made good progress in wondering over to FB dish and then right away moving away from it before we even have to correct her.

Pallas continues to exhibit high energy so would need her forever family to be an active environment as well.  However, she does have her down time and is especially cute when she’s resting.  Check out this napping pic after an especially active weekend.

It is evident Pallas is a very smart girl.  She responds well to guidance and direction and will definitely benefit greatly from a structured obedience training class with her forever family.

Hi from Pallas’s FM and FD, we are so very glad to bring you this update on how Pallas is progressing. Pallas is now being fostered at our home and is happily running and playing with our resident golden. It has only been 3 days since Pallas arrived in our home full of energy. Pallas and our resident dog’s introduction went well and they are already best buds.

Within the 1st 24 hours it became apparent how quickly Pallas ‘catches on’, with reminders and in some cases treats for coaxing, she retains the knowledge to sit quietly while FD or FM are preparing Pallas and FB to go outside; lay down quietly next to FB while FM is preparing dinner and to separate from FB when their playing might border on being too much for indoors. Here is a picture of her listening as FD patiently explains the benefit of sitting still for a moment so she and FB can catch their breath.

Pallas has settled in to our eating patterns/schedule very well and has not exhibited any resource guarding of food or toys. Pallas sleeps all night in a crate and does not make a peep. Pallas is definitely a velcro dog, she wants to always be by her humans and if possible right in your lap. She is learning that all 4 paws are to stay on the ground but sometimes is just so excited to see you she thinks she can walk on only 2. Her favorite activity is to snuggle. And of course nap time, here she is backside to backside with her FB on the couch.

The perfect furever home for Pallas would be with an active family with lots of love to give to this very sweet girl. Pallas must be seen in person so you can experience her loving disposition and snuggly nature.

Are you looking for a furry companion to love you unconditionally??? Please don’t wait, contact your placement advisor today, so you can come and meet this very sweet girl.

Hi Everyone, Pallas reporting in.  I had a wonderful day Saturday as I went to the Petco Event in Brooklyn Park and got to meet lots of dogs and people. I think I really love those events!  I even got to play a bit with Bailey (Rona 11-017). She was one of the parvo puppies from 2011 and now is all grown up and looking good! See some video of us playing here. http://photobucket.com/Pallas11-436 It is the first video. As you can see, I just LOVE to play. Do you have another big dog that LOVES to play hard but doesn't have anyone to play with? Could we possibly meet? Can you hear me now?

Contact your placement advisor if you would like to gaze deeply into these beautiful amber eyes...I promise to look deeply into yours. I could be your special Valentine...I'm just sayin'...
