Barkley 04-115

Profile

Barkley comes from a SD humane society after being picked up by the pound. His owners no longer wanted him. We can't figure out why. Without paperwork to help, our vet is putting his age at 6-7 years old. Since he came to us he has been neutered and had successful surgery on both eyes for entropian. At last he has been restored to his original true beauty!

Dear RAGOM,

Five years ago we adopted Barkley from RAGOM. He quickly became our best furry friend, and part of our family. He was especially a momma's boy and followed Katie everywhere. We believe that we gave him a good life and took great care of him.

On May 26th, Barkley went to the Rainbow Bridge. We miss him so much, and are so very lonely without him. We miss his forever smiling face and his beautiful deep red coat. We miss the friendship and the comfort he gave us as we went through some tough family issues over the last year. Barkley was a great dog. Thanks to RAGOM we had the privilege of being with him for 5 years of his life. He passed away at the age of 12. It's a pretty good age for a 100 pound bright red ray of sunshine and love.

Please inform his foster, Sara H. -- Sara and her daughter loved him dearly.

Who could possibly love this face? We do! Barkley is the best velcro dog you could ever want. This big boy weighs in around 85 lbs with the broad square muzzle that often accompanies larger goldens. His face is just starting to show signs of whitening typical to goldens as they age. He is a deep red with a beautiful thick golden coat and a tail that weighs about 10 pounds. He does have mild hip dysplasia in his right hip, (Only about 20% coverage of the hip socket) with just the slightest beginning of arthritis in the socket. He shows no signs of problems with running, playing and steps at this point. The vet has suggested we put him on a hip medication to help reduce the inflammation and keep the joint healthy to avoid further disintegration. The approximate cost of this medication is $20/month. Our vet has said he is not a candidate for surgery or further treatment at this time. In fact, they said the best thing to do for him is to give him plenty of exercise and keep his weight down.

But, let's talk about his best features. This dog is one big fur bag of love. He lives to be with you, follows you everywhere and is absolutely thrilled when you take him outside. Someone spent a great deal of time training him because he is totally voice trained. He will come, sit, lay down, stay and heel all on voice command. When out for a walk he will not leave your side (even when other dogs appear) unless you release him. I have never worked with a dog that is so well trained.

Barkley is also acutely aware of his size. Being a big dog he could easily knock you off balance but he behaves as if he knows exactly what he should do. He will race up to you and stop just before reaching you and then gently put his head on you for a pat. He is, by far, the easiest dog to control I have ever had. His size literally doesn't make a difference.

He is totally housebroken, has full access to our house and has never made a mess (unless you look at his water bowl). He gets along beautifully with our 6 yr lab, even willingly shares his food dish with her. No problems with kids or neighbor dogs either. But, we haven't tried him out with any cats yet.

Barkley is the perfect gentleman. He patiently waits his turns when treats are handed out and lovingly offers up his thanks with big sloppy kisses. There's nothing sweeter than hearing his paws galumphing down the hall to greet you at the door when you get home.

If you would like the comfort and companionship of a healthy adult dog with all the hassles of housebreaking and training already taken care of then Barkley's your man. He is a wonderfully loving and gentle dog and would be a great addition to your family.

p.s. He loves to go for rides!
