Barney has arrived ? and no, he?s not large and purple! Barney is approximately 5 to 6 months old and just a snuggle bug. He is so soft ? just like a large teddy bear ? in fact I?ve nicknamed him Fuzzy.

Barney came from a shelter in Iowa so we don?t have any background information on him. I would say from his reactions that he probably has not been a house dog in the past and is quickly acclimating to all the things a house has. The refrigerator is a real hit with Barney ? he gets so excited when you open it and he can look at all the food inside! The planes going overhead in the backyard are not his favorite thing so far, but he?s slowly adjusting to those. Barney loves toys ? and shoes. We haven?t given him a chance to find out if he would just carry them or chew them though! He also loves marrow bones and will lay quite content and chew away.

He isn?t housetrained so that will be our first thing to work on ? although at this age, they pick that up pretty quickly ? especially with the help of resident dogs and lots of praise. We?re also working on sit which he is doing very well after only a day here.

Barney is quite content to play with toys by himself and is an excellent candidate to be an ?only? dog and receive all the attention his new family could give him. He will need obedience classes (as all dogs do) and I think he will really enjoy the interaction and learning.
