Barney 07-662

Profile

This is Barney. He is being fostered in Aitkin, MN. He is a male, 11 month old Goldendoodle. Barney came from a puppy mill in Minnesota. He came with a coat loaded with mats and very smelly. He was very scared, and very neglected. I called the groomer after we got home from picking him up, and though they are usually closed on Monday they were gracious enough to clip him on Mon. The groomer said he was a sweetheart while being groomed and showed no aggression at all. What we found out after they cleaned and clipped him was just a disturbing as how he was before. The bottom part of his one ear is gone, either frozen off or bitten off. He is missing two nails on his one paw, and deformed toes on his other paw. He is very skinny; a walking bundle of bones. He will be going to the Vet on Thursday to get up to date on his immunizations and to be scheduled for neuter. Despite being very scared of us and our Golden, he is warming up to all of us. I feed him by hand, and he devours his food. He has been going for short walks and follows really good. The only problem is he has no insulation. His coat is gone and he has no fat or muscle to keep him warm. But we are working on that and in a few weeks he will be looking great. In the mean time I am going to make him a new coat.  Barney loves to be petted, once you can get him to come to you. We will be working on a future for Barney. His past is history. But unfortunately it isn't for the other dogs stuck in puppy mills. I will keep you updated on this guy. He won't demand much from his new home. Exercise, food, love, and warm place to sleep. And maybe another canine friend.

Barney continues to improve on his socialization. He had his stitches out yesterday and walked right into the exam room. The vet checked his ears and he still has problems with yeast so the doc gave him different meds for his ears.

He gained another 2 lbs! The vet tech wanted to steal Barney, but I told her no, he may have a family interested in him!!

My grandsons 4 and 7 came today and Barney has improved with being around them. He walked up to them and sniffed them then walked away. As long as they didn't approach Barney he was fine. When they walked by, Barney just moved out of the way.

After I took Barney to the Vet, I took him to my work because my husband was going to pick him up. He went into his fearfulness and wanted nothing to do with anyone. When he is home here he acts like just another dog. Whoever adopts Barney has to gain his trust and be patient and slow. My daughter did bring her dog, Molly, and Barney got along great with her. He is very comfortable with other dogs and follows their lead. If Molly went to my daughter, Barney would go. If Molly went to one of my grandsons, Barney would go. It's like he watches the other dogs and if they trust people, he will. So it is very important that Barney goes to a home with another dog, to make the transition easier. Well I hope next time we do an update I hope I am saying Barney found a forever home. (:

Barney continues to improve on his socialization. With all the company we have had over the holidays, he is starting to realize people just want to give him affection. He is still a bit shy and timid with strangers but he can be coaxed to come close for a pet. He is very comfortable with my husband and I. I can hug him and give him all kinds of affection and he just eats it up. He is still very fearful of kids, but if the kids stay away from him he just avoids them. Barney is starting to learn sit. He is smart and will be very easy to train.

Barney starts his days out with a long walk and he really loves the walks. I can hear him wiggling and wagging his tail in his kennel when I go into the mudroom. Watching him run is funny. I am sure he did not run at his last place of residence. Because when he runs he stumbles, but gets up and runs some more. He is getting better at his coordination though. And almost keeps up with Lew. After our walk, I sit at our counter for breakfast and Barney comes and lays his head on my lap. He knows he is not getting anything to eat, he just comes for the pets and scratches behind the ears. I look at those eyes, and it melts the heart.

He is kenneled while we are at work and during the night. But I think soon I will try leaving him out at night. We have a steep staircase going up to the bedroom and he starts up them but just never goes all the way up. We will have to work on that.

You can finally see Barney gaining weight. Although his fur is growing back in also, so I am not sure which is making him look better. Barney will be getting his stitches out next Monday from his neuter and I think he will be ready for a forever home.

We have to cross our paws Barney puts on some weight. His blood results came back, and most were good but his liver count was way high. And he is anemic. The vet said if he puts on weight and does not have diarrhea or vomiting ( which he hasn't ) he could bring his counts down. We will know more when he goes in for his neuter on the 17th. He has been coming into the frontroom and laying down on his own with no coaxing. Barney has fear aggression with kids. So Barney needs to go to a home without children. When I sit on the floor, he comes and lays down right next to me for affection. He is a funny character. He tries to take everything into his crate even a case of Diet Coke. Boy would that make a great commercial. Barney walked on leash for 2 miles this morning. He gets really excited when we go outside, and he has been doing great with house breaking. He is not very big, he is only 21 inches tall at the shoulder.

This is Barney in his new coat, it is a little big but he will grow into it. I really don't like the bows and bells in his ears. A dog named Barney just shouldn't have bows. But the groomer did such a great job and the gals at the vet liked them. So they stayed.
