Scooder went to the vet and he weighs 66 lbs. He is a smaller male, stockier and shorter to the ground. He is up to date on his shots, micro-chipped and mat free. Then Scooder and I were off to the Richfield PetCo where we had a great time and met lots of wonderful families. When you're as cute as Scooder, you're bound to draw in a lot of interested people.
I have learned a lot more about Scooder in the last couple days. First thing, because it's important and should be at the top of the list (I hate to be negative but) Scooder is great with dogs but he doesn't like when they try to take a toy from him. I don't believe it's resource guarding --I just don't think he likes dogs playing tug of war with his toy. There are toys everywhere in the house, and there have been no problems except for when one of my guys wants to play tug. Scooder will circle and avoid the other dog, but if they continue he will let them know he doesn't want to play tug with them. Nothing serious. but it's something you need to be aware of. Does this mean he should be an only dog? No, not at all. He just needs to be with a dog that respects his space, a dog that doesn't care to play tug. Scooder plays great with my boys otherwise. He shows appropriate play behavior, play bows, and loves to give them kisses.
Right now we have three resident dogs here and he is fine with all of them. Scooder met and greeted lots of Goldens at the Richfield PetCo event and had no problems. So I don't have any real concerns with Scooder, and I think he is great.
Second, he will (this happened one time) slide out of the gate with a human. This was totally my son's fault. It's easier to train dogs than kids...so, I swat my son with a newspaper and kenneled him (kidding, but I thought about it). Scooder circled around the cars, but my son was chasing after him to catch him. Again, newspaper and kennel idea popped into my head. You shouldn't chase a dog. He may have stopped and come back. Scooder ran like a race horse but we caught him a block down the road.
OK, so let's move on to the cute things. Scooder loves to roll around. I included a few pictures but it's just something you have to see for yourself. He gives lots of kisses. With certain people that he meets, he will give you his paw in a gentle manner. Loves all ages of humans. Mellow in the house, not a barker, gives kisses when you bathe him, is a Velcro dog, and all the other wonderful Golden traits. What I love the most is, when he looks at you with his goofy smile and gorgeous eyes, he has the look of a pup in an older dog. So far he appears to be housebroken, hasn't chewed on anything, and doesn't ask to get up on furniture. He is not protective over the dog food, great house manners. He does jump up in front of you but he never jumps ON you. Takes treats gently. I have learned all this in just 48 hours--imagine what you can learn in a lifetime.
I know I talk about Scooder's face a lot, but I can't help it. The way he looks at you is hard to explain. It puts a smile on your face and makes you feel loved.
Scooder doesn't shed much, he has a gorgeous coat. He has the curly/wavy Golden coat that is silky. I could pet him all day long.
