Bear 06-101

Profile

4/6/06: Bear is a 9 year old purebred Golden. Bear had been abused in his early years, and has spent several years with a family with two kids. The family gave Bear to RAGOM because of family medical concerns that did not allow them to spend the proper time with Bear that he deserved. Bear is already neutered and seems very healthy.

Bear has a wonderful personality and is very mellow. Because of his early history of abuse, Bear is skittish at times, and timid, and will take awhile to adjust to his foster home. However, he is already adjusting (within 24 hours) and is beginning to trust us. Bear listens extremely well to his name and most commands, and is housetrained. He is very non-aggressive and simply LOVES attention and being around people, and we think he would love walks, as he did not get them at his previous home.

We can?t wait to get to know Bear better, and as he gets to know us better, I am sure our next report will explain his personality in more detail. However, it is a pleasure to have a dog that is so nice and well behaved!

Bear has shown so far that he has all the Golden qualities. One of the strongest is his love of people. While we’re at home, he enjoys just sitting next to us, whatever we may be doing. We’ve been working with him on not begging for food while we eat meals. I thought it would take a length of time, but he learned within a matter of days. Now while I prepare meals in the kitchen or we eat meals or snacks around the house, Bear avoids food! He’ll sit in a different room or maybe in the same room but no longer shows interest. It was simple. That shows us that even though he’s nine he is capable of learning new things. We’ve also trained him to stay for lengths of time. He once tried to sneak after just minutes. Now, he’ll wait on the rug comfortably to dry off when it is damp outside. We’ve left him alone for 5-6 hours and he has been just fine, so we are happy about that. We prefer he not be alone much longer than that if possible, since he has been all of his nine years. Bear is allowed free roam of the house but also likes to sit in his crate at times, so we crate him sometimes too. We’ve also had ducks outside when Bear goes out, and he just looks at them nonchalantly. He sits out in the yard, while the ducks eat below the bird feeders!

One very interesting thing about Bear is that he loves to chew his nails. Almost every night he crosses his front paws and chews his nails. It catches your attention because his nails and teeth cause a clicking sound that you hear. When he is done, you find nail chips lying on the floor beneath him. It is so cute to watch. He grooms his front nails himself!

What a loving and well behaved companion. Bear has become our shadow, and has adapted quickly to his foster home, although it has been a long week of adjustment, as it would be for all of us. For the family looking to adopt an older dog, Bear would be perfect. He is not around kids in our home daily, but since he came from a home with two children, and has been introduced here to children, it is obvious that he is kind and gentle to all people. He loves his daily walks, and is wonderful on a leash. Bear does not pull on the leash, walks right beside you, and has a tremendous sense of smell, because he can smell something on every tree and post. We think he is trying to make up for all the smells he has not been able to inhale over the years, as he now gets walks nightly. He wants to make sure that his new home gives him walks daily too!

Bear will be going to the vet next week, but all indications are he is very healthy. Bear has good teeth and a beautiful fluffy coat. Bear has not been around or has not been raised with other dogs, and we will be introducing him to the neighbors very soon. He seems to be very interested in all the neighborhood dogs, but would simply rather be in the house with us. Bear has had no accidents in our home and has slept through the night most of the week. He loves to lay on his bed, as long as someone is in the room with him. We take him on rides with us daily, and he has begun to expect a ride whenever he sees us leaving (he knows he always comes with). We hope Bear is adopted soon, as he is finding our home to be very suitable for him: We have someone here all day long, and Bear just loves to be around people. Bear is getting spoiled in his foster home, and will expect to be spoiled in his new permanent home too!
