From Bear's forever family...

We’ve had Bear for 16 months now, and could not be any happier with our best buddy. Bear is the most loving dog that either of us have ever encountered. It is fun to look back at his old page from before we adopted him and see how far he has come. Bear is not really afraid of guys with hats anymore. One of his favorite games is to actually take his dad's hat off and play keep away. Vacuum cleaners are still a mystifying creature that cause some anxiety, but laundry baskets are no problem. Bear flourishes in large crowds of people now that he has been in a stable home for some time. After watching his dad fish for over a year, Bear decided that he too can fish now. He loves plucking minnows out of the minnow bucket and showing them to us. We want to thank everyone at Ragom for making this possible; and especially Bear’s FM, Judith, for taking such good care of him and making his transition as smooth as possible.

A note from Bear:

‘Yeah, my mommy and daddy are pretty cool. I really like to cuddle with them and wag my entire body when they come home. I still give the patented Bear hugs that my FM loved so much too! You can see the love that we share in the pictures below. There are a couple from my parents' wedding – which was a big day for all of us. Another picture is me playing with daddy while working in the yard to get ready for the wedding. I like the one of mommy and I chilling out in the car on the way home from Christmas in Colorado.’

Resident Dog and Foster Mom saying good bye to Bear

Foster Mom gets one last Bear Hug

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Hi, Bear here. What a weekend I had! Foster Mom and I broke out my new leash. Isn't it cool? It is pink, to match my tongue! It extends and gives me lots of room to sniff and explore and do my business. FM said I can use this type of leash since I am such a good walker.

We had friends visit us; one big friend and one little friend. I liked the little friend, especially when he was eating. He let me help him with his yogurt. FM said I was very well behaved. She still thinks I would be happier in a child-free household but it is good to know that I can be trusted around little ones. When in doubt, just dip them in yogurt. Yummy!

I will be at the Plymouth PetSmart this Saturday, September 13th! Come and meet me!

Whatcha got there, Little Guy?

Here, let me help you.

Wow, I had no idea kids could be so exhausting!

See, my leash matches my tongue!

This is Bear here. I have told FM I am taking over the responsibility of updating my page; I feel comfortable enough to do that now. Every day I am feeling better in my new situation and things are not so scary. Ok, everything that is a loud noise is scary, at least once, until I see what it is and that it won't harm me.

I love toys. The stuffed toys I rip apart. Really, isn't that what they are for? Foster Grandma gave me an ugly rubber chicken and, as hard as I try, Ugly Chicken is not destructable. I love Ugly Chicken. I also play with tennis balls and frisbees. Ugly Chicken and my rubber frisbee are added bonuses to adopting me.

When I find my forever family I will need:

  • A quiet home with bigger people who will play but are calm and won't scare me. I won't do well with little kids. They make me nervous.
  • A cat free home. Me and cats do not get along.
  • Daily walks. I am really, really good at them.
  • A fur friend, or not. I can share a home and attention, I am not selfish.
  • A forever family with patience. My FM says I am skiddish. Whatever. I just don't like new, loud things and people. It takes me a while to get used to stuff. I never show aggression. I always retreat until I am sure the situation won't hurt me.
  • Laps. I like laps. I will sit or stand next to big people and nuzzle my face into their legs. I can't buy gifts so this is how I show my love.

I got Bear an earlier grooming appointment on Friday. I used At Home grooming and Renee, the wonderful groomer, said Bear did great. He was a little anxious at first but relaxed and enjoyed the attention.

Really? My Big Bear, enjoying attention?

Renee did a great job and Big Boy Bear is more handsome than before, if that is possible. He smells so good! He has that new dog smell. He is like a furry bag of potpourri. I can't handle it, I just want to hang on to him and cuddle all day. You have to meet this dog just to smell him!

Bear's anxiety is lessening every day. He has decided my boyfriend is not so bad and they are now buddies. There is still a warm up period every time they see each other but that time is getting shorter and shorter. Last night they were playing outside and Bear's tail was wagging so hard, it was going in a circle. It is good to know his anxiety towards men is fixable.

Going for walks is something Bear is starting to enjoy. I do not have to tug him off of the couch anymore. He is still not doing his business on walks but that may come in time.

Bear has a grooming appointment on Monday. I bathed and trimmed him last week but I really should leave that to the professionals. I call his current look a dog bowl cut. :) I will update with pictures after this handsome boy has been correctly coifed.
