Bear 10-277

Profile

Bear is a very gentle and sweet 4 year old male.  He was very well behaved on his one hour ride to his foster home.  He met the crew here without a single problem.  Crabby old foster sister, Bailey, planted her feet and gave him “the look”.  Bear gave her a friendly wag and moved on.  Bailey is very particular about who she likes and who she doesn’t; Bailey gives Bear a “paws up”.  Next in line was Josie (Lacey 09-048).  Josie is a wild thing and was ecstatic to have a new playmate.  Bear obliged Josie by giving her a play bow and agreed to wrestling match later in the day.  Last, but not least, famous Fabio 10-157 was visiting.  Bear gave Fabio a respectful “hello” and that was that!  We love this guy!

The first evening at Bear’s new foster home FM and FD were enjoying a nice chat in the kitchen.  Bear was very relaxed lying in the kitchen with his new foster sisters.  Resident cat took a stroll through the kitchen, Bear gave her a sniff and went back to lying down without a word from us – yay Bear!  FM and FD had had a very busy week and FM mom said “that’s it I’m tired, let’s go potty and go to bed”.  Bear hopped up, did a happy dance to the door, took three steps out into the yard and took care of business.  He then slept quietly by our bed all night long.  The next day he hung out in the back yard while we did yard work.  What a good boy!  We love this guy!

Hee hee I love being the center of attention - Bailey, Bear, and Josie"

Bear was surrendered to RAGOM after being diagnosed with hip dysplasia.  His owner was concerned about the costs involved with treating Bear’s dysplasia, and made the very difficult decision to give Bear to RAGOM so that Bear receives the best care possible.  Bear had his first vet appointment today.  He is healthy and was given the go ahead to have his neuter surgery.

As soon as his original pelvic x-rays arrive we will schedule his neuter surgery, and work with his vet to come up with a treatment plan for his hip.

As promised, FM is letting me do my own update today. FM thought I'd be writing about my hips and my life in foster care. Guess what, she's wrong! Turns out it looks like I'm gonna be one of those "short-timers" in foster care! A very nice lady came to meet me over the weekend. She's retired and likes to walk and hike, doesn't that sound great? FM told her all about my hips and the nice lady said my hips don't scare her - she just wants to know if I get along with cats. You bet I get along with cats, I even share my food dish with the resident cat!
So as soon as we get the word from Dr. Rasmussen about what I need for my hips, it looks like we'll be having another chat with that nice lady. Hopefully it'll be "Happy Tails" to me!

The more we get to know Bear the better he gets! Bear hasn’t had a single accident in the house. We decided to play it safe and crate him with a break for lunch on our first day back to work. Bear went into the crate just fine but had a look on his face that said “Why are you doing this to me?”! Day one went so well we decided to try free roam the second day. We gated off the carpeted areas of the main level of our house and he enjoyed free roam with Bailey in the uncarpeted areas while Josie spent the day as usual in her crate. I was a bit apprehensive on my way home that day, what would I find after 8 hours? Much to my delight Bear met me at the door with a big goofy grin on his face and not an item out of place!

We live in the country and have a nice walking path in the woods a short distance from our home where we like to take the dogs. It hasn’t been a problem for one of us to walk 2 dogs down the road to the path, but would one of us be able to manage 3 dogs? Again, Bear was no problem. He walks very nicely with a flat collar right between the girls

The only commands Bear knew upon arrival at our house were “come” and “sit” - both which he does very well. We had a short training session with “down” the first evening and he mastered “down” right away. We are now working on “wait” (used before eating and before leaving the house) and “stay” (used when FM and FD are busy and need the 4-leggers to stay out of the way). He’s doing terrific with the new commands as well.

Bear was not raised with children and we are empty nesters so we decided to introduce him to some kids. He handled the high pitched squeal of a two year old and hugs from a four year old with ease. After circling their living room a couple of times looking for their cat, he calmly plunked down in the middle of the room and hung out while the kids played and the adults talked.

Bear was neutered today and a second set of x-rays was taken while he was under anesthesia. The x-rays are on their way to Dr. Rasmussen and as soon as we hear from her we'll let you know what she says. The sweet boy is resting comfortably by my feet as I type. Maybe we'll let him do his own update next time....
