Ben 09-069

Profile

Ben 09-069 is a Golden Retriever/Newfoundland/Pyrenees mix. He is 6 years old and neutered. He is a big boy at about 110 pounds.  He went to the vet today and is in perfect health!  The only thing she did say was to lose 20 pounds.

Ben is such a sweetie!!  He has come into our house and has made himself at home.  My resident dog really likes having him around as he is another playmate for her!  He is very gentle and has a very sweet disposition.  I don't think he realizes how big he is though when he tries to explore small spaces.  Cams, my resident is not intimidated by this boy in the least.  She loves that he showers her with lots of kisses and is always coming up to lick her face and ears.  She likes that he realizes she is a princess!

Ben is very playful and full of energy. He doesn't seem to get into anything he shouldn't.  I have yet to hear him bark. He also has a very mellow side to him. He has this thing where if he is very excited he will try and hump a pillow. He settles down quickly down quickly though. He also does drool sometimes as well. That is it though for his faults. This guy is awesome and so easy to have around!!!!

He has free roam and doesn't get into anything. He hasn't had an accident either.

Thanks to all who met him at Petco today! He was great there and was kid and toddler tested and passed with flying colors. He is very gentle and very sweet!! The chaos of having other dogs around did not phase him in the least.
What else can I tell you about this bundle of love? He is great in the car, he heels nicely for me on walks.  He does very well with his gentle leader. He is even perfect trimming toenails!  Not a peep!  He just holds up his paw and lets us get to work. This guy is so great!! If you are interested in meeting him, please email placementatragom [dot] org.

Thanks to all who were at Petsmart on Saturday.  It was fun to meet people that had been follow Ben's web page.  One of his admirers was nice enough to bring him a bone.  Thanks so much!  I have a attached a couple of pictures of him enjoying it.

We have just been learning more and more about Ben every day.  I would say one of my favorite things about him is he is the first thing I see in the morning.  When I open my eyes, he is usually laying on the floor a few feet away on my side of the bed.  He is usually awake, just waiting for me to get up. Every once in awhile I will see him raise his head or turn his head towards me to see if I am awake yet.
For those of you at Petsmart yesterday, you might have discovered with me that he has found his vocal chords when  a bit when frustrated.  He just gets so excited seeing other people and dogs and just wants to be in the action and doesn't like it when he is not in on the action.  He is still as gentle as can be as  when  he tried to greet a little white dog, that dog told him he was boss.  The barking does not occur at home unless he is frustrated with Cami not playing with him or he will bark periodically when he wants to come back inside.

We also double checked his cat testedness again tonight and he passed with flying colors.  He was pretty disinterested in the cat with no intent to harm or chase.  When forced to get close to the cat, the cat hissed and swatted at  him and he backed away.
A couple of other things I wanted to share that I unfortunately have trained him to get on furniture.  He is just such a cuddle bunny that it is hard to resist.  I am sure it is easy to correct if that is something you don't allow in your house.  He will snuggle up and put a paw or two on you as well as his head.  I hold his hand sometimes as he is leaning on me and his paws are almost as big as my hands.  Crazy!  Like I have said in the past, sometimes he doesn't know his size and he tries to jump up on the couch with only about 5 inches of space, so he kind of ends up on my lap a little bit at times.

He also doesn't do much with stuffed animals, but I had thrown this stuffed animal up to him and he looked at in confusion.  I then left the room.  A few minutes later he brought that stuffed toy to me.  Too cute!  He really wants to please.  I also think somewhere in his previous life he had been given people food.  When I am eating my food on the couch, he will come up right in front of me and sit very still.  He is never pushy or tries to get the food, but boy is it hard to resist giving him a scrap.  He is just so good sitting there!

That's all I have for today.  Thanks for reading about Ben!

Ben just continues to be the sweetest, gentlest thing imaginable.  He needs his people!  He follows me from room to room. Sometimes he is so quiet I don't even know he is there.  I was just typing on the computer with my back to the door and I turned around and got up quickly to leave that I tripped right over Ben!  I didn't even know he was there.  He took it so well.  Wasn't phased and didn't move a muscle.  I love him!!
He is learning fetch with the tennis ball and loves it.  Cami comes over to play and then it is over because she is a ball hog and he is very respectful and submissive to her.  He loves his nylon bones!!  I have yet to see him with a stuffed toy.  We have them all around, he just isn't interested.

As you can see him and Cams continue to be pals.  He was just barking at her because she went under the desk and didn't want to play.  That is the only time besides when he wants to come inside do I hear him bark.  He still gets overly excited sometimes with her and tries to hump her, but she is very stern and he isn't phased and then they are best friends again in no time.  If fact, if you look closely at one of the pictures he has his arm around her like a person.  I really wish the picture was clearer.  This just did not give the moment justice.  It was adorable.  They are so great together in the car too.  Buddies!  They share that back seat so well.  Can you believe it??  He doesn't try and hog the seat at all!!  I am going to be heartbroken to let this one go.  He is truly one of a kind!

What else can I share about wonderful, sweet, adorable Ben?  He is just such a character.  I really could keep this boy around forever.

I will tell  you though, I did learn the hard way that this guy really likes to do his business in private.  #1 is fine.  But he will not do #2  on a leash or if you are watching him.  Yea for me which means I can watch him from the window inside instead of outside in this frozen tundra that we are living in now.  That has been the only issue and once I figured out what the problem is, it has become a non-issue.  What else can I tell you about him?  My favorite thing is when you call his name he tilts his head.  You call it again and he tilts it even father.  It is adorable!!

He is still madly in love with my resident.  He loves to give her kisses and she has fallen just as hard.  It is so fun to see them cuddle.  She really encourages the attention by coming up to him lying down and putting her paw on him.  He sometimes wants to wrestle and when she is tired of wrestling she comes up on the couch.  Since he doesn't get up on furniture, that is the end of that.

I have also learned that he barks when he wants to come back inside.  Yea for me, that I don't have to guess that he is ready to come inside.

We went and visited a couple of other RAGOM volunteers yesterday and they have another dog and a cat.  The boys wrestled and had a blast.  He wrestles differently with boys.  He isn't afraid to not be quite as gentle.  He is still very submissive, but he was ready to play longer and barked in frustration when the other dog was done playing.  He also didn't seemed bothered by the cat.  I think he was curious, but was just as content to leave the cat alone.  It was also sooo fun to see him run free in the backyard.  He looked so happy!!

That's all I have for today.  If you are interested in meeting this bundle of love, email placementatragom [dot] org.

Can you say perfect companion?  I can not stress to you how wonderful and soothing it is to have Ben around. This boy is amazing and absolutely wonderful!!  As you can see from the pictures him and Cami are best friends.  He loves her!  This boy gets along with anyone and everyone!  He actually met the neighbor yorkie yesterday and he was so gentle with him.
He just let the dog keep jumping up to him and he held very still.  He seriously is just a dream foster.  So easy!  He follows me from room to room.  I feel bad to get him up when I am just going into the kitchen quick to get a snack, but then he is right behind me.  He plops right back down at my feet once I am back to the couch.  He is so great!!

He loves his belly rubs.  This is one mellow, easy going boy.  He still does not get up on furniture.  He just sits right next to the couch and sits quietly and lets me pet him as long as I want.  I have also discovered that he knows sit, down, and shake.
Ben continues to do so well in our house. He is so sweet!! He has the routine down and is so cute when I go upstairs and it is near bedtime, he is already in his spot!
I think his favorite thing to do is to go outside for walks. He gets so excited and goes to the door as soon as he sees I have the gentle leader in my hand. It is so fun going on walks with him.
I have also discovered he knows the command stay VERY well. He doesn't move a muscle until I tell him to. When I reward him, he takes his treats with very gentle care. This dog is just awesome! Enjoy the pictures!
Please enjoy the pictures from Petco the other day.  I have also attached pictures from naptime today.  If you are interested in meeting this sweet, loving boy email placementatragom [dot] org.
