GENTLE BEN

The Story:   “Ben” came to the local shelter in SD as a stray.  Nothing was known about Ben.  He was kept on a ‘stray hold’ in hopes his owners would find and reclaim this beauty.  No such luck.  Ben was held for 10 days and no family came forward missing him.  He was then put on the “adoption floor’ of the shelter in hopes he would be adopted (for a few weeks).  It is unbelievable that everyone passed up this magnificent golden in the cage.  He was becoming very depressed and unhappy of course.  So Ragom to the rescue!  He was a definite yes to bring into Ragom and when we went up to visit “Ben”, we just fell in love and had a ‘great warm feeling’ about him.  He of course, did not have a name when he came in as a stray, and he is so gentle and big, the name “Ben” was it.  The following day he came home with us for foster-care.  One happy camper!  We were all happy.

The Facts as we know them:  Ben is approximately 5 years old and neutered.  He is a stocky big boy.  He weighs 78#.  He is a dark red-golden in color and has a magnificent coat, however, he had some horrible large mats, stinky from an infection of the skin, not positive from what, but he is now on an antibiotic and benadryl to get him more comfortable.  He has been to my wonderful groomer, Ronita, who does miracles with these rescue dogs for me!  Now big Ben is all spiffed up, shiny coat, no knots or mats and just beautiful and soft.  Ben is all current on vaccinations, microchipped, frontlined and wormed.  Ben has a ‘tag-lesion’ if you will, on the corner of his right eye (looks like a sleepy goo running down).  We will have this further assessed next week to see if it in fact, probably needs to be removed so as not to get a possible infection and determine exactly what it is.  Ben does know commands:  sit, down, kiss, wait (very very SHORT wait),  and come…… (sometimes) J  He does fine riding in the truck and no problem getting in and out.  He would, if he could, ride up front with you. Otherwise, just fine, watching the world go by, happy to be with his human riding around.  Ben is learning to walk on a leash, better.  Ben thinks he should ‘pull’ and be ahead, instead of next to you.  We will work on that, and of course, learn his name and understand a recall, which I believe we are getting it!  Ben is housetrained completely, never an accident and will go to the door when/if he wants out.  Ben really enjoys being outside, especially on these cool mornings.  We have a nice large fenced in yard which he enjoys.  When we walk, he definitely walks a pretty good pace for a long time.  If you really like a good power walk (or a stroll once he learns to calm down a little) he is great.  Ben is fine around food and toys.  He does great with our resident dog, Maggie (9+ year old Eskie/Border Collie) and super with ALL of our cats!  Totally ignores them.  He likes the cooler linoleum floor in the large kitchen area.  Ben has free roam now and there is absolutely no problem.  He is quite all night.  Will Ben counter-surf?  Yes he will.  I believe he probably had opportunities to do this in the past? This again, is something we will work on.  NO human food, NO begging.  He is a good student however.

The schedule:  Ben’s schedule in this foster home is this:  FM & FD are early to rise and early to bed; we are up about 4:45 am or so.  Dogs go outside potty and after that is breakfast.  Ben is on: ivet canine adult reduced fat with omega 3 & 6.  He eats about 1-1.5 cups in the morning and again 6 pm in evening (not as much in evening, maybe 1 cup.  We do mix food with a small amount of either cooked chicken (for both dogs) or hamburger or small amount of Merrick duck and sweet potato.  He eats best in the mornings (I put his medications in the food) and ok at night, but not a huge appetite.  He is left alone for 4.5-5 hrs.  From 6 am until 11:30 am.   The dogs of course get a good long walk(s) in the afternoons (not in real hot weather).  Again, supper time is about 6 pm every evening.  Our household goes to bed early, around 9:30 pm due to the early morning schedule.  Ben takes snacks very nice.  He enjoys laying on the deck or under a big tree in the shade and really enjoys it outside.  He is not scared of anything (law mowers, weed eaters, vacuums….).  A very gentle, docile boy.

Summary to date:  Ben is learning his name, is housetrained, a total LOVE bug, very typical golden who wants as many pets as he can muster up.  He can stand to lose 8-10 pounds and get ‘in shape’ with walks and runs.  He goes into vet next week to get eye checked so more to come, if/when a possible surgery.  Ben will make a wonderful additional to a home!  I personally would like to see a home with a fenced yard because he enjoys it so, he is fine around kids however, real young ones WILL get knocked over due to his size and giant ‘happiness’ for life.  He does enjoy Maggie our other dog, someone to go in and out with and hang out and snoop in the backyard and follow in the house in case he missed something!  I believe he would love to be a ‘couch potato’ and yes, if he were invited, probably a bed-buddy too.  This is one “gentle Ben.”  We just love fostering him.  Really deserves the best “golden life.”

This is a final entry for our “Gentle Ben” and this is an adoption entry!!! Our grand man has been adopted.  This was a ‘special’ birthday present for Teri, Gentle Ben’s new mom.  He has been ADOPTED by the J family and what a grand and lovely family indeed.  Sam J., their resident 8 yr GR, will now have a great brother with whom he can bond with, enjoy, play, swim and also heal from the loss of this other long time brother he lost, Max. I have once again, had the pleasure to met one of the nicest, dog savvy, wonderful families who took the time, patience, and research in looking at adopting a rescue Ragom golden.  This family rented a VAN to make sure there was complete comfort for our foster, Ben, and his new brother, Sam and family (Teri, Roland and Christian).  It does not get much better than when potential adoptive family shows such knowledge, research and patience in looking for a truly ‘forever’ golden companion dog.  Sam his new brother at 8 years old, lost a great friend a lifelong pal earlier this year Max (to cancer), as did his owners, and with their search for a new family member with Ragom, have now adopted one magnificent golden rescue, our Gentle Ben.  This has been a grand day for all of us.  I am so thankful and happy that Ben came into our lives as a foster boy for the short time he was with our family!

Quick update on Ben boy. Last week Ben had his two eye 'tags' which were getting bigger, removed. He did great. A pathology was also sent in (just to be positive and results will be next week). He also had a dental and a front incisor removed. So he is healing great. He has a couple stitches on his eye which come out in about 10 days. Ben is taking the icky 'cone' in stride. I keep the large floor fan going so he stays cool....I think their heads can become 'warm' when they breathe/pant. We are still walking and he does pretty good with his new 'hood' on top! Get some 'odd looks' too! Ben continues to be one of the best fosters and just a lovely, giving, patient, happy, all around great golden! Ben enjoys Maggie's company, he loves to hang out on the deck now, as this time of year has been beautiful and not humid. But he is fine by himself too. Always wants the golden lovin' as they almost all do. He takes his meds just fine and is all set now! Everyone in the neighborhood thinks he is a doll too. One perfect golden boy.

Sending some new photos of this awesome looking boy. How lovely is he with the yellow rudbeckia flowers?  That beautiful golden coat and big fluffly tail!  The kids loved him.  He is so much fun to take photos of.  Ben is great around children, other people, other dogs, just about anything.  He has a fantastic personality.  We are still working on pulling on our walks but doing much better.  He really loves now that it is cooler, to just lay out on the deck and soak in the sun and fresh air.  He of course enjoys being brushed.  Ben may have some allergies (as almost all goldens do).  So he is on benadril to help him with that and paw wipes in the morning when the dew on the grass and (ragweed) is at its worst.  He spent the past couple days with our daughter and grandchildren who are 4.5 and 7.  He loves the attention of course (also likes when things get quiet too!  We all do!)  Ben has lost about 5# since in our care which is great.  Ben follows me to bed at night and curls up on the floor next to me on his blanket and he also likes the big doggie pillow at the end of the bed.  Maggie (our resident girl) and Ben do great together.  When one goes outside, the other generally follows.  They are BOTH anxious to go for their walks and I think Ben could walk 5 times a day.  Once we have walked a few blocks he does not pull as much at all and is a wonderful companion to be out with.  No other dogs rile him up nor does he bark.  The only time we have heard him bark is when he ‘talks’ to us….as in “can we go out for a walk?”  This generally occurs when he is pretty sure we are about to go on one!  I cannot say enough wonderful things about this great golden boy.  He is very gentle, great with food, treats, manners, etc.  Here is a golden boy who enjoys just about everything, life, sun, yard, people, kids, cats, dogs…….all around wonderful.  Again cannot imagine how anyone ever lost him or let him go………nor how anyone passed this beauty up at the shelter!  Sure makes you wonder sometimes.  Our gain for sure!  They don’t get better than this!

Update on G.B.: Ben did have his eye exam and all is well (8/25/11). All is fine.  The ‘wart-like’ bumps are little growth/’tags’ which should probably be removed at some point (perhaps during a dental or something) otherwise not a big concern at all.  He has one in the corner of his right eye and one on upper lid of same eye.  The eye looks just fine.  Ben was anxious at first at the vet clinic (as he was at the groomer’s).  I believe he has an ‘apprehension fear’ of something---being left at a clinic or place with office/cages, etc.  This behavior is something more to try to read into our crystal ball about his past.  (who knows?)  Once we were in the exam room, paced some, a few treats, let him just going around and around for pets etc., he became trusting and listened pretty good.  We can understand there was sure something in the past which makes him feel anxious and somewhat nervous.  Not out of hand, just ‘worried.’  After about 15 minutes we began to chill a little.  (I think that is why he does fine with free roam and not a crate).

The exam of ears and eyes etc was fine.  I asked Ben at the office to ‘lay down’ and he did, and vet checked his belly/tummy area for any more rashes from being confined in shelter etc. before, and he is healing well with the antibiotic.  Ben needs to perhaps learn to know that no one is going to do anything to him nor hurt him.  We were pleased to learn too that he has lost 3# since he came into our home for foster a little over a week ago.  He is down to 75# from 78#.  I believe a big part is good food/schedule, exercise and NO human food (begging or otherwise).  I say that because he really is interested in ‘people’ food and I have a feeling that is what he used to get some?  However, Ben is in relatively good shape and now that my groomer cleaned him up so well, he really looks great.  (He will do behaviors for treats!  Chicken, deer meat, cheese, etc.)  Just a stunning looking golden boy.

Ben really loves to be by us, follow, wants attention (gets the golden nose thing going and try to force your arm up for a pet!).  He will respect firm ‘no’ and with your back turned, will learn that this behavior is not acceptable. With repetition, he is learning……….  He has already really learned our household schedule well.  The thing he has learned so well which is sort of touching, is he now knows when it is bedtime, goes back way to the back of the house in the bedroom, and lays on his blanket by my side of the bed and happily waits for me to come to bed.  Just wonderful!  No concerns, just content.  To be by human…..just a lover boy.

He does not drag a specific toy around although he loves, loves to play!  He is really getting the ‘fetch part’ which is ‘go get it, bring it, give it.’  We are very impressed.  Ben is FUN.  We are working on the pulling when we first go for a walk.  He really loves and enjoys his walks.  He is ready at the door so be ready and careful.   He ‘knows’ when we are thinking about going (so does our Maggie).  Ben is very content once we are back from the walk and a happy boy.  Ben is great when meeting other dogs and people.  He will want to run up and pull to meet them.

Ben enjoys the cool hardwood floor by the ‘library-office’ or the linoleum in the kitchen, especially with a fan blowing on him.  Yet, he sleeps on a blanket on the floor by me and/or a large doggie bed off the master bedroom in the large bathroom.  I am sure these are contingent upon the warm or hot weather as well.  Perhaps when cold out he will enjoy a doggy bed more?  Ben is wonderful with our 3 resident, nuts-o cats and our Maggie girl (10). He is very respectful of all of them.  Ben really wants his attention however.  He is riding in the truck better.  Sniffs all the fresh air coming in and now is learning slowly, not to be anxious, that a truck/car ride is a good thing and nothing will happen to him.  (perhaps he has been taken places he didn’t like?).  We don’t know.  Once he in comfortable, I really think he enjoys it.  (you better have room!)

Ben eats along side and near our resident dog, Maggie, and sometimes cats, and he does just fine.  I can give his medication (antibiotics) in a chunk of good food (chicken/cheese etc)  or in his kibble (hid in his food) or no problem putting them down his throat with a chaser of good kibble.  (reminder that these are large antibiotic capsules…ick….these are not a small tiny pills to hide, he takes 2 pills 2X a day.)  This is very impressive. He wags his tail and takes in stride.  He loves to be brushed and has an awesome coat.  We are slowing getting less licking (some times feet and sometimes belly) but he is healing fine from a prior (staff?) infection from before rescue.

If you want a dog who is a real lover, boy, Ben is it.  If he was invited, he will jump up on your lap, bed, chair, etc.  (we as fosters do not encourage or do  that, but he is ready to BOND with you and be by you whichever your preference is).  I can only brag about this magnificent, regal boy.  He is stunning inside and out.  We of course would really like to see someone home longer as I do feel he is anxious after a few hours.  I am only gone 4 hours a day and home every afternoon.  We are home on weekends.  He is great lover of people who come over however, he still needs to learn to be calm and not to want or try to jump up in excitement.  He is housetrained however, I would ‘watch’ him if he is not let out steadily.  I have seen him try to lift leg a couple  times, and out we go.  Ben really enjoys the outdoors.  Due to our location, I have no idea on a lake/water but he seems to really enjoy walking on the bike bath by the river.  Ben is one beautiful lovely golden boy.
