Benji (Oscar 07-664)

Profile

Here is Benji, a sweet and lovable 3 yr old Labradoodle.Benji was born and lived in a puppy mill until he was 11 months old and then came in to RAGOM.  For the next two years of his life, he lived in doggie heaven, had a loving mom and canine brother, made great strides at living the “Golden” life and almost lived happily ever after.  But, Benji’s owner lost her job last July, and tearfully made the decision,  a few weeks ago, that she could no longer afford to keep Benji.  For the last 1 ½ years, Benji has had chronic ear infections, and his owner just cannot afford any more vet bills, so he is back in RAGOM’s care.

And, care for him, we will…This is the plan for Benji now.  He is getting ear washes and ear drops, plus we are weaning him onto a totally different food.  Although it sounds odd, ear infections in dogs are often caused by food allergies, so we are weaning him off all his former food and treats, and starting him on a Venison and Sweet Potato kibble.  He likes it, so we hope this is what he needs.

Benji who was called Oscar before he was adopted in 2007 is a very gentle soul and easy house guest.  He definitely still exhibits the typical puppy mill traits of timidness and fear of new situations and people.  But, he is very sweet, and it is so rewarding to be gaining his trust.  Each day, he is more comfortable in our home, and worms his way in to our hearts more and more. Re-homing Benji, who through no fault of his own needs a new home, is what rescuing is all about.

Things that stand out for needs in Benji’s new home are:

Lots of love and some patience too

        A doggie sibling

No small children only because he is not used to children and probably would not be comfortable with them

A fenced yard - would be great as that is what he is used to

The means and acceptance to treat Benji’s ears if the infections continue.

Benji's pack said goodbye to him yesterday as he left with his lovely new family. Benji will be living in Iowa and will have a blast with his new fur sister and brother on an acreage.

My eyes well up with tears as I miss him so much but this is what we do--we find fantastic homes for these great dogs and that's exactly what we did for Benji.

See you later Benji--remember we will always love you!

Benji continues to do just great. I'm really surprised he hasn't been snatched up. He is healthy, so easy and plays well with others--dogs and people!

Below are recent pictures of Benji hanging out and playing with my resident dog and two new friends, all former RAGOM dogs. Everyone got along well right from the beginning and they had a great time.

If you want a dedicated furever friend and snuggly good boy, please contact your placement coordinator if you would like to meet Benji!

Benji will be at the Lakeville Chuck and Don's event on April 10th from 12:00pm-1:00pm!

Benji continues to do very well and just gets more and more comfortable every day. Benji is much less skittish here than when he first arrived. Chow time is a very happy time at our house and he waits with great anticipation for it to be served. He was originally pretty skittish during meal time and would run away if he heard any unknown noise or saw any unexpected movement, but now, he stays with his food until he's finished. I can talk to him, sing off key, move about in the kitchen and touch him while he's eating without scaring him away.

I'll mention again that Benji needs:

-another confident dog in the house for leadership
-a fenced yard--any height as he shows no desire to bust out
-to continue to stay on special ingredient food so he doesn't get any more ear infections (they are finally gone, yay!)
-no young kids
-your love, time and attention - he just loves his people!

Benji is just a very easy boy, has GREAT recall, loves his walks, perks up when he sees bunnies or squirrels, completely housebroken, does not counter surf, does not chew on inappropriate items, is trusted with free roam of the house when left alone, responds to commands quickly, loves his creature comforts (see picture) and loves to be with his people. What more could you want in a BFF?

Great news for Benji—he no longer has an ear infection! His sores are and gone and the vet looked deeper into the middle and inner ear and did not see any infection. His ears also smelled good—meaning they didn’t have a nasty odor which is another indicator. The biggest change for Benji was his diet—he’s on limited ingredient food-- so that’s what he will stay on forever—the food may be more expensive but it’s still cheaper that on-going ear infection treatment and not to mention how great it is for his well-being. That is such great news for the sweet boy—he is feeling good and he is happy.

Benji is happy in spite of getting bit by a dog over a week ago at the dog park! Poor Benji was minding his own business and a dog came running over to him, they did ‘the freeze’ and then the other dog took a big ole’ bite on his back! Benji seemed to barely notice it, so I don’t think he was really ever in pain. Of course off to the vet we went, he has stitches that will be taken out very soon and his fur is growing back. He’s finishing up his meds today and all is looking good.

Benji continues to be such a sweet boy. He sure does like his people! He is my velcro dog so you always know where he is. Benji, my resident dog Murphy and I went on a road trip this weekend to Nebraska. It is a 6 hours drive and the two big guys were sharing the space in the back seat of my Jetta. Benji was a champ and just squeezed in where he could and went to sleep, getting up once in a while to look around if he felt the car slow down or stop. He’s a great car rider but not always the most patient when he’s left in the car for a few minutes. I think with more experience he will improve with that—he just needs to be reassured you are for sure coming back! See new pics of him in car!

Benji is a happy playful guy—he is showing some interest in playing with a friend of mine’s dog—we’ve had to curb it since he has stitches on his back right now. But once those are out we will permit a little more rough housing and I’ll report back on his playing social skills.

Benji is ready to be adopted at any time. I have listed what he needs in previous updates so we will wait for the perfect forever home for our Benji. He so deserves that and he is willing to wait for the perfect home and people to call his very own.

Benji continues to be the sweetest boy ever. Now that I've had him for over a week, I've learned more about this great dog. He LOVES his people. Dogs are ok, but people rule! He takes his time warming up, but at the end of the day, he wants to be with his people. He is still a bit of a velcro dog but in a good way. He follows you around but, you can still move about without too much interference. He has been brave a few times and lets me go upstairs or in the basement without him and he patiently waits for me to come back.

Benji went to the Minneapolis Pet Expo both Saturday and Sunday and he was a champ. He accepted strangers pets all day long (oh, life is hard). He often was cautious and very random when he was more hesitant with some than others. He was the same, whether it was woman, man or child. At the end, he always let them pet him.

His feeding time is getting better and he's getting less skittish. I've been trying to desensitize him by exposing him to normal sounds and gentle touches while eating. He jumps at first but then is less reactive on the second time.

A few more things I've learned about Benji:

He is not a counter surfer and is certainly tall enough to reach if he wanted too.

He is very curious and likes to check everything out.

He is a smart boy and learns good boy things quickly.

The baby gates are all put away and he gets free roam day and night.

He is a bit of a site hound and reacts if he sees a bunny or a squirrel and may take off after it, but not sure on that yet. Otherwise, he stays right by your side and doesn't appear to be interested in going anywhere without you.

He loves his new haircut (feels so good when he gets his rubs) and he looks pretty cute too!

His ears are looking better, but will report back when I get the good doctor's inspection.

All and all Benji is almost a perfect dog! The pack just loves him.

If you are interested in Benji, please contact your placement coordinator.

Benji and Murphy enjoying the sun

Benji showing off his new doo!

Monday, March 1, 2010

Hi there to all of Benji fans. Benji is now being fostered in South Minneapolis and we couldn't be more excited. He has been just as easy as they come and just going with the flow. Of course he is a bit curious about his new surroundings and cautiously checking things out, but he is fitting in just great. The main thing for Benji, is to understand completely that my resident dog Murphy is top dog and that will guarantee smooth sailing for as long as the eye can see! :) So far, so good. Funny story today is that unknowingly Benji over stayed his welcome on the 'main' doggie bed in the living room and Murphy was allowing it, but apparently only for a specified amount of time. Finally, Murphy stands up in the middle of the living room and seems to be randomly barking at nothing (very unusual for him)--sort of looking to the side at Benji on the bed. Finally I realized the issue and poor Benji, completely clueless looks up, so I politely asked Benji move to the 'other' bed and all was good with Murphy. Oh, the tough lessons you have to learn when you are new on the scene. Benji was just fine with it, made no difference to him and very happy on the other comfy bed.

Benji has met many of the other pack members and not surprisingly got along with them all. So certainly I can attest to the fact that Benji gets along with most any dog. Since I've only had him for a short time, I will report as I get to know him. He is, as expected, very shy on meeting new people and still shy with me, but I can see him slowly warming up.

I am still trying to get a handle on his ear infection. I have meds to continue with from his previous foster, so I will report the progress as we continue with his treatment. One thing that I am impressed by is that Benji doesn't rub or scratch his ears, even though they look pretty sore. I am just praying for the meds to work and his ears clearing up. Also, he is on limited ingredient food to eliminate any food allergy possibility. Hoping something will work very soon for the sweet boy!

Here are some pictures of Benji in his new foster home-he is such a trooper and amazingly adaptable.

Hi!  Benji here.  Hey, I want you to know I'm doing great!

Guess what?  I got to go on a rode trip to Iowa last Saturday!  I love to be invited along on a trip.  It was a little cramped in the tiny back seat of the truck, but I didn't care.   I don't remember too much of the trip anyway, because when the wheels start to move, I just can't stay awake.  I snoozed almost the whole way down and back!  I heard my foster mom and dad discussing what a great traveler I am!   I wouldn't know.  I was sleeping!

Are we in Iowa already!!

I'm going to have my ears checked again on Friday.  I sure hope they are good.  I am really good about letting foster mom put my ear cleaner and medicine in my ears, but it sure would be nice not to have to do it everyday. There is a good part about the ear drops, though.  I get some of my great tasting Venison and Sweet Potato kibble as a treat after she does it.  I like that!!  That stuff is good...I get 2 cups at meal times too, but it just  seems to disappear so fast!   I'm definitely part of the clean plate (bowl) club.  I never leave even the tiniest morsel...neither does Lacy.  She is just like me.   We always check each other's bowls to make sure we didn't miss anything.   Sometimes that girl is pretty creative.  See what she found for us below!!!

"It's gone already!"

"Look at this!"

"Let's have at it!"

"Busted!"

"Can I have some more, please?"

"Oh well, Lacy.  Let's just have a drink"

Hey, everybody, I'm going down to Plymouth to Chuck and Don's on Saturday 2/27 .  Please come out and meet me!

Just look for this handsome face.  I'll be there from 11am - noon

Great news!!Benji went in for a recheck of his ears today, and they are a lot better!  Although we can’t be sure and there are no guarantees, it looks like the diet change has really helped him.  Great news for this wonderful boy.

Snow, snow and more snow!!  Below are a few more pictures of Benji enjoying himself in the winter wonderland.

Who could resist this face?

Lacy and Benji (right)

Catching a snooze on his favorite pillow

What an easy house guest Benji continues to be.  He is a very good boy and loves his favorite pillow.  The favorite pillow is not the one he brought from his former home.  The former pillow is not comforting for him or his security blanket as we thought it might be.  Nope, it’s only use is trading power!  He LOVES resident dog Lacy’s pillow and has completely taken it over. It was love at first sight!   Wonder of wonders --Lacy prefers Benji’s!  So, a trade was made, and they are both happy!

He loves his people and loves his doggie friends.  Benji always makes sure he knows where Lacy, foster dad and I are, and loves a pet or scratch from us, and a nuzzle from Lacy.  He has also met five of the neighborhood dogs – one big, three small and one super small puppy – all of whom he has been delighted to see.  He’s all “smiles” when he sees or hears  a fellow canine.

And……. he’s smart too.  There might be more, but these are the  commands that he knows for sure.

Come, sit, stay, lie down, and no.  And, of course, he is fully house trained.  (And, pretty quick when he goes out –thank you, thank you…it’s cold out there for FM and FD.)

So, if you would like to visit or know more about this sweet boy, please contact your Placement Advisor.
