Big Rusty 07-624

Profile

Big Rusty has arrived, and he is BIG!  He was surrendered due to his family having to relocate and could not bring him with.  They are very sad about this and want to make sure he goes to a great family.  He is a full bred neutered Golden Retriever, and around 140 pounds!  He is roughly the size of a Saint Bernard.  He is 3 years old, with a birthday coming on December 29th.  He is up-to-date on all his vaccs.  He does need to be microchipped, so I'll be bringing him in to the vet sometime this week.

He did well on his first night here, baby-gated in our bedroom.  He is house trained, and will come and get you if you don't notice him standing by the back door.  He drools A LOT!  We can't walk around in our socks, as there is always a trail and they would get soaked!  We are not sure if this is just him adjusting to us, or if he is channeling his inner Saint Bernard.  Time will tell.

The owner stated that he is afraid of loud noises, including thunder and fireworks.  He isn't destructive during these times, but prefers not to be alone.  He has medication to take during the fireworks season.  The owner also says that he seems to be claustrophobic and does not like confined areas, so he wouldn't do well in a crate.  He seems to really like our kids (5 and 8). He perks up when they are around and likes to run around the yard with them.  He didn't eat last night or this morning, so I asked my 5-year-old son to put the bowl in front of Rusty, and he ate!

Rusty is turning out to be a great dog, with lots to love!  I have included a picture of our resident dog, Ruby for comparison's sake.  We thought Ruby was big at 90 pounds, until we met Rusty.  More to come as we get to know this big guy!

Rusty certainly drew big attention at the PetSmart event! No one had ever seen a Golden so big! He did great, and loved the attention and all the treats he received. At home he no longer drools, and has settled in quite nicely. He eats 4 cups of food a day (2 in the morning and 2 in late afternoon), and always leaves a little in the bowl each time. I put him on a long 30 foot lead when I take him outside. This allows him to play with the other dogs and run where he wants. When he runs, he sure looks like a small horse in a slow canter! Boy, can he cover the distance!

He is very sweet, loves the kids, especially when they chase him around the house. He LOVES to be chased. He likes to carry stuffed animals around in his mouth, and sometimes they get carried outside and he leaves them out there. Then the next time he goes out, he races to it and grabs it up! He also loves to play tug-of-war with a rope. It is the funniest thing when our 18 pound cocker takes the other end and the wrestling begins! He has the best breath and cleanest teeth that I have seen in a 4 year old dog. He loves to be brushed, and waits in line when I take out the grooming tools. He may not fit in your Christmas stocking, but I'm sure he'll make a great addition to your household!
