July, 2009:

Bo made his way into our hearts & home yesterday & what a sweet little guy he is. Bo is a purebred golden retriever that is 10 weeks old & weighs in at a whopping 15 lbs. He had a loving home but was surrendered into RAGOM's care when his family found out that he has a bad hip & they couldn't afford his medical care.

Bo is a sweet & fairly mellow little guy. He has his bursts of energy but also takes more than his fair share of puppy naps. He is partially potty-trained & we will be working on that. He sleeps through the night in a kennel, & although he tries a houdini act of trying to escape before the door is closed, he settles nicely. I'm amazed how little puppy biting he does & he's learning quickly "no bite" & "release". He of course gets along great with my kids, age 6, 12 & 15 & he also met my gang of goldens (2 males & 2 females) without an issue. Bo wants to play with them but it's been awhile since I've fostered a puppy & they aren't quite sure what to make of him yet.

I will be trying to get Bo into the vet this week for his first set of vaccines & to get microchipped. I will also be setting up an appointment for an orthopedic consult to see what can be done regarding Bo's hip. Until we find out more Bo will be unavailable for adoption but please keep this little guy in your prayers.

Just a quick update on Bo,

Bo loves the snow and spends a lot of time in the back yard running around and making 'Bo-Angels" in the fresh snow. He is getting much better with his barking to get his way, we use a 20 oz. pop bottle with some pennies and bottle caps in it as a shaker, and shake it when he starts barking. The noise distracts him enough that he forgets what he was barking about. As evenings have become much darker and colder Bo is not getting daily walks but more like every third day or so, he makes up for this decrease in activity with his wrestling matches with his best friend Lacey and running like a wild man in the yard.

Bo is looking forward to meeting his forever family, so if you would like to meet him let your placement advisor know.

Just a quick update on Bo.

He continues to fit in well at our home and he is best friends with our resident golden Lacey. I have added some more photos with his new favorite toy. He picks it up and squeaks it then drops it and chases it, then he picks it up and drops it down the stairs and chases it to the landing. He will do this over and over. He can be such a goof.

He has met a few different dogs and he seems to get along with everybody. Maybe he would fit in with your family. If you would like to me Bo please let your placement advisor know.

Hi all, Bo here, I want to thank all of you that came out and saw me at Goldzilla, I had a great time on the walk and my foster dad let me wade in the lake and get all wet, I also saw a bunch of other dogs and humans and I think I was a perfect gentleman to all.

I have been relaxing at in my foster home and have become accustomed to the routine here. Me and my foster sister Lacey play all the time and I have started playing with Bailey my little white foster brother. He brings a ball or toy into the room and growls at me until I chase him into the bedroom and under the bed. I get bored waiting for him to come out, I go back out to the living room, he will come back out and do it over and over again.

I also met my foster dad's niece and her puppy Jack. He is only 8 weeks old and he is a Border Collie. We got along great and I even let him play with my bone.

I would love to meet a Furever family, I would need a physical fence since I like to chase bunnies and squirrels, I would do fine as a single dog or as part of a pack as long as the other dogs put up with my play antics, and I do good with kids but would prefer them to be 5 or above because I could knock younger ones down when I get excited. If you would like to meet me let your placement advisor know.

Hi Bo Followers,

Bo has moved to a new foster family this week after spending over a year with his previous foster family. Thanks to them he is very well adjusted and socialized to both dogs and humans.

Bo is fitting in well in our home and has made friends with everyone here. Even Barney the cat likes him as you can see in his new photos. Bo likes to go on walks with the pack and is learning that the Gentle Leader is a good thing. His walk is a little strange to say the least but he keeps up with the rest of them without any obvious pain or discomfort. With his orthopedic issues previously detailed he will not make a good running partner but will make a good walking friend. Walking is good for him to keep his hips strong and to keep his good muscle tone.

Bo is still a puppy and can get kind of excited when you get home or when he decides it's time to play. Lacey our resident golden puts up with most of it but once in a while she needs to remind him who rules this pack. Bo backs down after he is reminded. Bo's excitement may not be suited for very small children as he may knock them down, but children over 6 or so should be no problem. He also likes to pick up shoes when he meets you at the door or when he decides it's play time and wants your attention. He never chews them, just picks them up and carries them to you.

If you would like to meet Bo let your placement advisor know.

Can't keep a good dog down...that's Bo's tune lately. Bo had his hip surgery on Monday (THANK YOU DR R !!) & also had his neuter done at the same time. Poor Bo doesn't know what hit him but he is such a trooper & is off & running so to speak.

Bo's surgery was a femoral head osteotomy of his left hip. In other words the femoral head (or the ball part of the ball & socket joint) was removed, creating a "false" joint. The procedure is designed to help eliminate hip pain associated with chronic hip arthritis & hip fractures. Dr R said that Bo did have a significant amount of arthritis in his hip already...amazing for a 12 week old puppy! The remaining portion of the femur (or thigh bone) is now flat where it meets the acetabulum (the socket portion of the joint). Bo's body will lay down scar tissue to create a sling effect in what used to be the hip joint. The majority of pets will have no signs of their disability & do not usually have long term restrictions on activity. Dr R said that puppies will usually do great & recover better than adult dogs that have this surgery.

Bo is currently on restrictions...2 weeks of strict rest (no jumping, no running, no access to stairs & short leash walking only) but try telling that to him!! He's feeling better already & just wants to play. We are trying to keep him kenneled more (trying to enforce the rest) & although he's doing fine with being kenneled (no more sneaking out the door) he's not very happy not being able to play. I'm doing physical therapy with him daily by doing range of motion exercises. He will get his stitches out in 10 to 14 days & will be able to increase his activity after the 2 week mark. The plan is to follow up with Dr R in 4 weeks & by 6 weeks he should be 90% recovered. At this point I want to get Bo through the initial 2 week recovery period before he starts looking for his forever home but it will all depend on his progress. Please keep this little cutie in your thoughts & prayers.

Our little Bo has been with us for a week now & has adapted to our home quite nicely. He has earned himself a few nicknames, mostly Bobo, Bo Diddly, & Mr Bo Piddly. He is still working on his potty training...he often goes to the door when he wants to go out but he's not very patient about us getting to the door & opening it first & thus still has several accidents. A work in progress...

As far as Bo's hip is concerned the vet has examined his hip & the xrays & it looks like he will be having surgery on the 27th. Tentatively a FHO (femoral head osteotomy) is planned. His hip is currently dislocated, & although Bo walks with a limp, he doesn't appear to be in a lot of pain. The vet said that his muscles are beginning to atrophy, & that the dislocation is likely the result of trauma that probably happened at least a month ago. Poor boy. He was given his first set of vaccinations, microchipped & started on heartworm preventative.

Bo is your typical puppy...very friendly, full of energy, & a bundle of cuteness!! Bo made his first public appearance by attending Sushi with your Poochie, an event put on by Sidewalk Dog, & was the hit of the party.
