Please welcome Bo 12-378 to RAGOM! Bo is a young guy but thick, big and powerful. He came to Ragom from a farm where he was an escape artist so we keep him close and back out of our front door. Bo will need work on his walking as right now he drags Foster Mom and Dad across the yard, we are going to try him on a gentle leader and see how he does.

Here is what we know about Bo so far:

  1. He gets along with cats. He is interested and will chase a little but will not harm the cats he just wants to sniff.
  2. He has very dry skin. Starting to use fish oil in his food today and took him to get an oatmeal bath today, hopefully this will help.
  3. It would be best for him to have a fenced in yard with a high fence, he would be ok with a family who will walk him a lot but he should not be tied outside without a fence.
  4. He knows some, he will drop something when you ask, he knows come and stay.
  5. He does not jump on people but will jump up next to you if you are walking around and he wants attention.
  6. He is not quite house broken, so will need training for that.
  7. He has not been cage trained and wants to avoid it, right now we are keeping him closed in the bedroom with us at night.
  8. He LOVES to chew so keeping anything soft off the floor is a must.
  9. We suggest no small children in the house as he will knock them over. He does not know how big he is and how strong he can be.

He is quite a loveable dog and wants to be around his people all the time.

Updates

Time for a Big Bo update. Bo came to RAGOM over the Thanksgiving holiday and went to a temp foster home for a few days. He's now moved to a permanent foster home and is settling in nicely.

First, a little background on Bo. He's a pure bred Golden with that really beautiful red color that goldens are known for. Bo is 16 months old and has probably reached his adult size, which is good because he is a big boy. Bo stands about 30 inches at the shoulder and when he gets on his back legs he is almost as tall as foster dad. Bo spent the first year of his life growing up on a farm. He had the run of the place and wasn't very good about staying around home. We heard stories that he was found several miles away from home by neighbors who would see his tags and call the owners to come get him. So it was decided to surrender to RAGOM to get him into a home with a fenced yard.

Bo is a sweetheart that loves attention and just wants to hang around people. He's still got some of those puppy traits that require some training and a little maturity to correct. He is still being house trained. No accidents yet but we will continue working with him to make sure he understands. He has a lot of puppy energy and needs exercise daily so he can burn some of that energy. We are working on walking him on the gentle leader. The first time we tried it, well, we won't go into that, but the second time he let us put it on him and after about 10 minutes of work, settled down and we had a nice walk around the block. The first night he arrived he didn't much appreciate his new kennel. Being a puppy, we didn't want to give him run of the house. But once we got him in his kennel, he settled down and slept through the night. After that, he has been getting better about going into the kennel and always does fine once in there. Bo respects baby gates, which is good because he's big enough to just step over them if he really wanted.

Bo does have a love of tennis balls and playing fetch, something that seems to be in the genes for all Golden Retrievers. We get him into the back yard for some fetch a couple of times a day. He does a good job of chasing down the ball and bringing it back and dropping it at your feet. The other day we were playing fetch with Bo and his foster sister Ellie, who will fetch tennis balls till she drops, and Ellie was faster than Bo about getting to most of the balls. One time Ellie got to the ball first, stopped to pick it up, and Bo was following along at full speed and ended up jumping over Ellie because he couldn't stop. Wish we could have gotten a picture of that.

Here is what Bo needs in his forever home. Because of his size and he is still in that puppy stage of life, he needs a place with no small children. He wouldn't hurt them intentionally but would probably knock them over in his enthusiasm to play. Bo needs someone that will commit to getting him some training. We found he responses really well and should be easy to train. A fenced in yard for him to run would be great. An active family that enjoys getting out for walks or runs would be good. Bo has a great personality and is a diamond in the rough that will be a great dog once he grows up. If you think he'd be a good addition to your family, contact your placement advisor!
