Bongo is a beautiful 2 year old Golden Retriever mix; we aren't sure what he is mixed with but he's super cute. Bongo was a stray from up north so my guess is he was a country dog and he is still getting used to all the noise that goes with city living.

He enjoys chasing squirrels and rabbits in our fenced yard with full throttle enthusiasm, and has tried his best to catch one of the birds flying when he's outside. Because he has been so interested in the small animals in the yard, Bongo would probably do best in a home without cats or other small animals.

He wasn't sure about his gentle leader at first but now knows it means he'll be going for a walk, so he tolerates it. Last night we took him for a walk after dark and only made it for 1/2 block. The city noise and car lights really scared him, so we're walking him in the daylight hours now.

Bongo does great with adult humans and would do best in a home with older children or an adult fur-ever home. Bongo is currently being treated for kennel cough and tapeworms, a legacy of his time as a stray, but otherwise is a healthy guy. He only weighs 70 lbs, he is far too thin and you can see all his ribs, so we are giving him extra food so he can put on some weight. Bongo knows some basic commands like sit, down and come, which he almost always responds to. He is a diamond in the rough that just needs to get a little healthier before we can polish him up. More as we get to know this sweet guy better.

I am contacting you to let you know that our beloved RAGOM dog (Bongo) passed away on December 28. His RAGOM number is 11-285 and his adoption papers list his name as Gertie. Yet his RAGOM foster family had thoughtfully changed his name to Bongo, which is a name we kept. His name reflected his energetic and bouncy behavior and spirit.

He was a beautiful and kind friend to our family and many people in our neighborhood. His morning and evening walks were a consistent ritual in our community. In the end, even with great medical care and medications, his tired hips could no longer carry him.

We mourn Bongo's passing, as it has left a huge hole in the life of our family. We have many photos and videos of Bongo, and recall with great fondness the joy he brought to our family since 2011. May Bongo rest in peace.

Bongo 11-285

Hi, It's me Bongo the handsome Golden Retriever mix. My foster mom has been so busy that she has not added an update so I'll let you know what's new. As you can see I still love sticks and when we have a big wind lots of sticks appear in the back yard and I am having a great time. I've learned to wait when someone opens the door until they say it's OK for me to go outside. I also wait when food is put into my dish until I'm told it's OK to eat. I've kind of learned a new trick with a bouncing tennis ball. When I go for walks I heel nicely with a gentle-leader on quiet streets. That's all for now cause I have to go chase some squirrels!

Bongo has had a great week. As a kind-of-shy dog, we are blessed with new warm doggy feelings every day. Bongo really warms up to quiet people and will come up to someone sitting in a chair and put his head on their arm and look up at them with his big brown eyes.

We are pleased to tell you that Bongo weighed in at 73 lbs today and the Vet said that was a good weight for him.

Bongo has had a great time playing Frisbee and has freely gotten into the van. Bongo continues to chase all the squirrels out of our yard.

One of Bongo's favorite things to chew on is large sticks, well more like a split log from the fire wood pile! A trip to the groomer made this boy soft and handsome, although he wasn't too sure about all the fuss over him. On Saturday we went to Lebanon Hills Park and Bongo enjoyed the walk down the trail and through the woods. When we got to the lake he had a drink and put one paw in the water and then backed up. It appears that he might not be a water dog. Sunday Bongo met many dogs and did fine. Monday he met a family with 11 year and 14 year old girls and was a friendly guy. When we go on our walk he is still very aware of the sounds and cars but is more relaxed.
