My name is Beauregard Vanderpelt II but my friends call me Boomer. I am a distinguished senior, quite charming if I do say so, and, through no fault of my own, I’m looking for a new forever home.

I am 10 years old, a fit 72 lbs, and my new foster mom says I’m a tall drink of water. I’m adjusting very well to my new digs and I’m getting to know all the residents here, both human and canine.

I’ve been flirting with Foster Mom for the last couple of days now and it seems she’s completely smitten. Honestly, who wouldn’t be? I’m a catch.

Prospective adopters, please don’t all line up at once – there are some steps I am required to go through as a new dog in RAGOM’s care, including a wellness exam.

All of this will take a little time so I’m not available for adoption just yet. I’ll update my blog as events unfold.

Boomer quietly passed Tuesday, the 6th of March to the Rainbow Bridge. He was 14 years young. He did not suffer any pain or discomfort. He was at home with us and I held him in my lap.

My husband said he was the sweetest dog he'd ever known. They shared a strong and loving bond. Boomer enjoyed a very healthy life with no major problems or complications only a love of his varmint friends - squirrels and chipmunks. He was a perfect companion for a pair of seniors. Boomer also had many friends who will miss his bright, loving smile. He was raised by someone who also must have loved him very much and trained and treated him as part of a happy and gentle family member. He brought us many happy hours of joy and companionship.

We will miss him greatly.

Boomer here - Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with your families and got loads of toys to play with. I had a quiet holiday this year but it was full of fun and new toys from my family. I also got a pretty blue sweater to keep me warm at night and on cold days when I venture outside. I sure miss the snow but at least I can get around the yard and check out the squirrels and rabbits. My Forever Dad [FD] built a "steel tree" that holds all of the bird feeders and the squirrels can't get to them. I spend a lot of my day watching them. We finally won the battle with those furry tail varmints and it sure has made the birds happy too. They all gather around all of the feeders and have quite a time eating everything FD puts in them. FM made a bag to hold suet and the woodpeckers and chickadees just love it.

My health is good for a guy my age. I've slowed down quite a bit but I have bursts of playful energy that makes my FM stand back and laugh at me. The neuropathy in my right rear leg is causing me to slow down but the rest of my legs seem to be doing fine. I take my medication three times a day and I feel pretty comfortable. FM saw to it that I took off a bunch of pounds and that really helped. I now have my very own bedroom. It's fully carpeted and FM has it lined with endless blankets that I can curl up in. I can stretch out and even have room for a visitor if I want. I get treats before I go to bed and I'm right next to FD if I need anything. I wear my new sweater to bed sometimes and FD covers me with a knitted sweater if it's really cold. It's all so comfy and I have a good sleep every night. FM and I get up in the early morning, make coffee, and wait for FD to come down to join us.

We had a visit from a special friend of FM. He came to our house and had dinner and spent the evening enjoying the fire in the fireplace and playing an airplane game with FD. I got a lot of attention along with a couple of boxes of my favorite treats that are so special and he brought me some coupons for doggie food too. Boy am I living high on the hog. FM & FD got grown up gifts that made them smile and hugs went around between everyone.

FM is sending along a picture of me with my handsome Christmas sweater on, laying with some of my Christmas toys and my special Emu that never leaves my side. Hoping you all have a very Happy New Year. Don't forget to have your wellness check and teeth checked by your doctor so you'll have a good, healthy year. This is Boomer signing out for now.

Hi All -

Birthday Boy Boomer here. Yup! I became 13 years young on the 1st of August. I've enclosed a picture of the festive day with two of my birthday presents. The white shark [sharky] is from my Forever Dad [FD] and the blue whale [ Wally Whale] is from my Forever Mom [FM]. But the best present of all was a box of my very favorite cookies from FD ! FM did a pretty good job making me look quite handsome for the occasion I think. She said she was rusty on trimming ears as it has been quite a while since Melodie lived here, but it sure is nice to get all of that fur off. She says my nails are just getting too hard to cut anymore so she's going to sand them down like she does with the big guys.

I've lost a lot of weight which my doc said is very good for my leg disease. I sure feel better and I don't have my leg giving out under me much anymore. I also have my very own "bedroom" right next to FD. It's huge and filled with toys which I take out every morning and then FM brings them back in the evening. I can stretch out big time and nobody bothers me all night. It's been so nice and I'm much stronger now and so steady on my feet.

FM and I come down in the morning and make coffee and I go out and look for squirrels that have become a pain FM says. I have my breakfast and medications and then settle in for a snooze while FM and FD watch the news and read the paper. Then it's off to their offices where they work on the computers until lunch. FD says I tell time better than a watch. That's when FD gives me my cookies. Late afternoon FD takes me out in the backyard and we have a great time doing all sorts of things. He tells FM that I haven't slowed down at all. He's my favorite but we don't tell FM. She smiles and says I'm a Velcro dog the way I follow FD around. Life is good here. I'm very healthy and happy and we all agree that I don't look or act my age. FD says I've still got a lot of "get up and go" in me and he's having a hard time keeping up with me.

Hope everyone had a nice summer. Time to go check on the varmints. Bye for now.

Boomer here. At last the snow has been replaced with rain and more rain. The Easter bunny brought me a raincoat. Check it out. It's a bright yellow that goes so well with my golden fur coat. It has so many cool features and fits very well. I don't mind going out in the rain - well what Golden doesn't but I'm in no hurry to come back in. It's so good to get outside again.

Foster dad and I are trying to figure out how to keep a couple of nasty part red squirrels out of the bird feeders. We're not having much luck but when they see me they run to the fence and get away fast.

I continue to lose weight which makes my vet very happy. Although I'm on top of my duties here, I am slowing down just like mom and dad are doing. I have developed some minor leg problems and the doc says they will slow me down too.

Yesterday I got my Spring bath. I'd never been in a Booster Bath before and didn't really want to get into it but Foster Mom convinced me it would be a good idea with pieces of liverwurst that is by far my favorite treat. Mom and dad said I was a very good boy and they say I'm quite handsome now.

I have my very own velvet covered footstool to get on the bed at night. It's really nice. I use it now to get on the bed so Foster Mom can trim my nails and we play every afternoon so I can get my leg massages and tummy rubs before dinner.

Hope everyone has a great summer. Signing off now but we'll chat later this summer or fall.

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Hi! Boomer here. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I sure did. The best part for me is the preparation of all of the goodies. That's when Foster Mom slips me pieces of my favorites. Then my dinner has turkey and gravy mixed in along with veggies and it's the best meal of all. After Thanksgiving I find more treats in my meals for several days. I've been on a diet but at dinner time Foster Dad brings me neat carrots and beans and slips them to me one by one.

I've been loving this snow too. Every day I go out and stick my nose way down into the deep snow and look for all of the critters hidden below. It's so much fun. And when the snow is coming down I try to catch the flakes in the air. These are good days for a Golden.

Every afternoon I jump up on the bed and Foster mom and I have our own playtime. I get to roll and roll on my back and get my tummy scratched. Then we play "tug of war" with my favorite toys. Sometimes I get my nails cut while I'm there as I like to be stretched out and relaxed. At night I snuggle up on the bed with mom and dad until morning. Then we all watch the TV news and they have coffee. I jump up on the couch next to Foster Mom and stick my nose into her lap for a little extra petting. All of my backyard critters are sleeping away the winter so I doze on Foster dad's couch in his office or lay in the sun in mom's office. I think winter is a pretty great time of year.

I've sent along two pictures of me in the new snow because I'm wearing my Christmas present. It came early because of the storms. I think I look quite handsome in my new Sherpa and suede coat. I also have cool sled dog booties that keep my feet warm when it gets below zero since I like to take my time getting back to the house.

Last night I had a very special visitor that came all of the way from Colorado and stopped by for dinner and a visit just to see me. Boy did we have fun. Well, I sure hope you all are enjoying the holidays and the snow. Merry Christmas to everyone and I hope Santa brings you just what you want. I sure am living the good life and love my foster home. Talk to you later. Happy New Year.

Boomer here.  Just wanted you to know that today is my birthday.  I turned a very young 12 years and I don't feel a day older. It's been a busy year. I finally got rid of the rabbits last winter. This spring I took on some ducks that liked my backyard and were quite persistent. I managed to confront a chipmunk with unfortunate results. I will not do that again. My days are filled with working on obedience training. Boy, I really like that.  I also help my foster mom on our new web site. My day started off with some glazed, raised donut treats with my breakfast. I got dressed up with my favorite scarf and showed it off.  Had a nail and foot trim along with ear sculpting yesterday. Tonight my birthday dinner is going to include poached chicken breast and some favorite veggies along with my new chow that is very tasty. As you can see in my updated pictures - I'm still the handsome guy that set the ladies swooning.  My birthday toys included one we call Mr. Green Jeans and one my foster mom made me.  All in all it's been a great birthday celebration. Oh, the white polar bear is my favorite pad. I keep an eye on all of the backyard varmints from here. Ciao everyone - see you again soon.

Boomer enjoyed the last snow of the winter and is happy to see green grass and chipmunks. Those pesky squirrels are the bane of his existence.

This week was his annual  health exam, profile, and other tests, with overall results from his vet.  From the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail he was pronounced in excellent health with no concerns other than a couple of teeth that need cleaning and a few "winter pounds" that need to be taken off. His chronic mild arthritis and continued thick stifle joints are under control with medication enough so that he still thinks he's a four-year old guy. He also was happy to meet another Ragom guy and the two of them delighted the other clients in the waiting room.

He continues to be a happy dog and now follows my husband around everywhere since his serious auto accident. He loves to roam around the house looking for just about anything that piques his interest. He delights in stealing Kleenex and paper napkins and searching closets for stray toys.  He especially loves the new memory foam mattress topper and spends some days just parking himself on it and looking out the bedroom picture window. The summer will bring new training challenges, which he thinks are fun and masters with great delight and he's now the official kitchen guy.

Boomer loves winter. It provides him with a number of varmints to search and chase. He's ready for winter when the temps drop below zero too. He loves to stick his nose into the snow as if he's watching fish under water. He also has his own path around the backyard when the drifts got too high for him to get through. He's a senior dog with a "young at heart" attitude and he hasn't slowed down yet. Squirrels top the list, followed by rabbits, then shrews. Indoors he loves to lay by the window and watch the birds at the feeders.

From Boomer's forever family...

Boomer has assimilated easily into our home and is enjoying his many new experiences. He is very comfortable with our routines that have been tweaked to include his important issues and special habits so dear to him.

While he still loves playing hide and seek with his chipmunk friends, he continues to insist that the squirrels do not belong here. He totally enjoys the increased freedom he’s earned and makes him so happy. He takes his duty, with great pride, of protecting his surroundings very seriously. If there is a negative, it’s that he doesn’t get many visitors.

He has become a “kitchen” guy and loves to be with me when I’m preparing anything. He gets his share of tidbits. He senses something is coming with all of the grocery bags appearing.

This is Boomer's place in the family room with his bed and his #1 favorite toy out of half a dozen or so. It is with him 24/7. He takes it to bed, outside, checking things out - you name it. He loves his Imu. They are inseparable. He plays with all of his toys and puts them in different rooms but Imu goes everywhere with him.

Boomer is an extremely intelligent dog with a huge capacity and thirst for learning. He wants to be involved in everything and feels it’s his duty to do so. He knows when it’s time for certain things and will patiently wait until we respond and acknowledge his presence. He is very healthy and age hasn’t slowed him down. All of his profiles to date have been normal. He only takes Rimadyl twice a day for his legs that endure his endless joy of flying off of the deck and racing around the yard checking out his favorite places. He continues to bring us joy and happiness daily and fills our house with life and warmth.

From Boomer's forever family...

Boomer here. My birthday was August 1st. They said I was 11 years old now. I don’t know what that means. I’m in the prime of my life. I’ve had a very busy six months with my new Forever Parents. I’m in charge of chasing varmints away from my new home. The cats and rabbits give me the most trouble. I love my new home and backyard.

I have a lot of toys but my mom gave me an Emu and he’s my favorite. I take him everywhere I go. Dad plays pull with me all of the time. Back of mom’s chair is my doghouse that I chose for my very own. I take all of my toys back there and I go there when I want to be alone and quiet.

This summer I had my first bath. Now everybody thinks I’m quite handsome. In the beginning I slept on the bed at night but there was just too much tossing and turning, so mom put blankets next to the bed and I sleep on them. In the morning I jump up on the bed to wake dad up and he scratches my stomach and plays with me. I hang out in the kitchen so I can get extra treats from mom – carrots, little tidbits of chicken, and whatever falls on the floor. I also have my very own table to eat at. It’s white with fancy legs and I have my very own pretty clear glass plates.

My favorite game is to steal paper napkins and Kleenex around the house. Mom and dad let me pretty much do anything I want to do. I lay on the couch with mom whenever I want attention…I like that a lot. She cleans my ears and cuts my nails and I give her a little hard time but she just smiles and ignores me. I have windows everywhere to look out of and check on the varmints. When the mailman comes he gives me a treat. He’s very nice. Mom gives me treats at bedtime but she makes sure I don’t put on any weight. They say I have some arthritis in my knees but mom gives me a pill after I eat and it makes me feels pretty good. I still love sailing off the deck or the bed when it’s time to play or chase. Mom doesn’t like that and I worry her a lot. I have a really cool vet and everyone at the clinic comes to see me and pet me.

This is a pretty neat Forever Home and I like it here. I want to say I’m very happy. I’m sending several pictures so you can see that I’m lookin’ good for my age. You can read more about me in the Ragom Newsletter and mom writes about me in her blog and web page. I'm pretty popular among the girls.

Love, Boomer

From Boomer's forever family...

HERE COMES BOOMER!

He breezed into the house without hesitation, spent about 24 hours scoping out every nook and cranny and decided it would be his “Forever Home.” Then there was the box of toys along with the very special one from his Foster Mom. One at a time, he carried them around and deposited several in each room. Next he checked out the floor to ceiling windows in the living room and the wall of windows in the family room – both were his favorite spots to spend the day. Most of his time was spent watching his Forever Mom and Dad. Partial to men, he became his FD’s shadow. Gradually he warmed up to Mom, but only because she knew where the food was. From the very first night he made himself at home on the bed in the best location – he could align his back along FD’s legs and when he turned over FM was there too. By the second day he discovered a backyard full of critters and he was in his glory. His work was cut out for him. When the back door opened, he’d fly off the deck into a snow bank and chase those varmints out of the yard. How he loves the backyard with its myriad of smells, unknown holes, and trees and shrubs to check on. Come spring he was sure there would be more. Oh yes, this was indeed his Forever Home.

I apologize to anyone who wanted to meet me at Annie’s party.  We had a household crisis and ending up not being able to go.

This week I discovered how to make Foster Mom melt.  She was laying on the floor, completely ignoring the personal parade I was staging around her with every toy in the house.  Exasperated, I gave up and laid down next to her.  That’s not the best part though.  She was still ignoring me so I slid my front legs under her neck and laid my head on her shoulder.  Score!  I got big hugs and kisses and she even got up to get me a treat!  After that she was putty in my paws.

I’m still waiting to meet that perfect forever family.  Foster Mom says I’m just about the nicest boy you’ll ever know so be sure to contact your placement advisor if you’d like to meet me.  I’ll be waiting!  Woof to my sponsors!

"Today I worked on my impressions.  Here's me pretending I'm Amish."

"You talkin' to thee?"

PetCo was a blast!!  I hope you were all able to stop in.  There were lots of dogs and lots of visitors and I believe a good time was had by all.  Foster Mom says I was on overload.  Who wouldn’t be?  I just wanted to be sure I had an opportunity to meet and sniff everyone.  And I think I did.  I was still wound up when we got home so I dug a toy out of the snow and ran about twenty laps around the backyard.  The two resident dogs just stood and watched me.  I’m pretty sure they thought I got into the dog nip at the PetCo buffet but I didn’t.  I was just happy!

Things are still going really well for me in foster care.    I’m so acclimated it’s like I’ve lived her my whole life.  Every night Foster Mom and I play keep away with what’s left of my toys and when she says we’re done, I lay my head in her lap and stare longingly at her.    She tries to look away but, alas, she can’t help herself.  This ploy is usually good for at least a few more minutes.  Then I assume my position on the couch and snuggle in for some TV watchin’.   Life is good!  Foster Mom even bought me a new food bowl.  It seems she’s a little paranoid about a condition called bloat so she bought me a raised dish to ensure I won’t suck in a lot of air when I eat.  I don’t think she’s very happy that I spit each mouthful of food onto the floor and eat it from there.  You know what they say about mature dogs and new tricks!

I hope you’re all going to Annie’s party.  I am!

You know you want it!!!

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Boomer here with an update on my recent doings. Things are still going really well for me here in foster care. I’ve got the household drill down pat now and Foster Mom says it’s like I’ve lived here my whole life. She’s so smitten with me she’s started using the ‘L’ word. Now, normally I’d think that was awesome but a little resident birdie told me that Foster Mom has sabotaged at least one adoption because she fell in ‘L’ with her foster dog. So, before you hear otherwise, I’d like to go on record as saying that I do not bite, I do not pee in the house, and I do not pick fights with the resident K9s. I’m just a nice boy who LOVES to play with stuffed toys, will greet you with unbridled enthusiasm when you get home, and who will give you cow eyes til you can’t stand it anymore.

I know that if Foster Mom were to adopt me, she wouldn’t be able to foster anymore so I’m really hoping for my own forever home.

Might that be yours?

A big woof to my sponsors!  I’m forever grateful.

This is one of my Christmas toys.
Just look at what one of the resident dogs did to it.
Spring me from this MAD HOUSE!!

Please come and see me at the PetCo in W. St. Paul on Saturday January 10th, I would love to meet you.

Saturday, December 27, 2008

Happy holidays everyone!  Especially to my sponsors!

I had the most awesome Christmas.  I now have my very own toys and I love them all!  I am so grateful to all the humans that have been so nice to me.  Foster Mom says I deserve it because I am just about the nicest boy in the history of the planet.   We’ve become best buddies.  I follow her around the house and tease her mercilessly with my toys.  She says I am relentless in my desire to play but I’m so adorable I can’t be resisted.  I still let her get the toy sometimes and then we play tug.

I have been the most excellent houseguest since I’ve been here.  Not a single accident in the house, I’m trustworthy with unsupervised free roam of the house, I haven’t countersurfed (although I have a reputation for same), I’m a great car rider, I rarely bark, I’m not a picky eater, and I pretty much love everyone.

Here's me in my relentless pursuit of play....

And here's me when my first tactic doesn't work!

Friday, December 19, 2008

I just saw Little Orphan Annie on the TV and I would like to take this opportunity to tell her that I wish her well and that I’ll be keeping my paws crossed for her.  If it will help, I would be happy to loan her any of my toys (okay, technically they’re not mine but I’m sure I can coerce…I mean, convince the two resident dogs that it’s the right thing to do).  I would be happy to help in other ways too if it will help little Annie get better.  We’re all thinking about you, Annie!!

I would also like to send a great big THANK YOU to my sponsors, Mary and Carl S.  I’m honored that they’ve selected me and grateful for their gift.  They also did my transport so they must really think I’m special.

Me.  Boomer!  I’m humbled.

Monday, December 15, 2008

It’s me, Boomer, with an update from foster care.  I’m having a really good time here.  I amuse Foster Mom every night with my antics.  She says I’m silly and laughs out loud at me.   I pretty much follow her wherever she goes.  When it’s TV watchin’ time, I like to get one of my favorite rope toys and parade it around the family room.  I keep it just out of reach of Foster Mom while I prance around with it.  Sometimes I let her actually get it and then we play a little tug.  I even let her win sometimes cuz I’m just that kind of guy.  When we’re done I go into the living room and step on the foot switch for the lamp.   Foster Mom is surprised every time she walks in there.    At night I stake out my spot on the bed and I don’t move a muscle til morning.

We went to the PetCo event and that was fun too.  We met lots of really nice humans and some really nice dogs.  I especially liked Zuzu 08-497.  I know she’s considerably younger than me (okay, in dog years she’s REALLY younger than me!) but seriously…age is really just a number, isn’t it?

Here’s a picture of me with one of my foster sisters.

Boomer here.

Things are still going really well for me in foster care.  My wellness exam revealed that I am exceptionally healthy; however, I did need to have some dental work performed.  That was yesterday and I made Foster Mom very sad because I didn’t wag my tail for the whole rest of the day.  This morning I’m feeling MUCH better and I have resumed my most favorite game:  Parading all the toys, one by one, in front of Foster Mom and then playing keep away with them.  When Foster Mom quits playing, I parade the toys in front of the resident dogs in the hope that they’ll want to play with me.  They never do though.

Some things you should know about me are:

       1) I am one of the nicest dogs Foster Mom has ever fostered

       2) I’m tall and, as such, I take up a considerable amount of space on the couch and bed.

       3) I have a history of having a high prey drive so a fence is a requirement.

       4) I have no known cat history but, given my high prey drive, it probably wouldn’t be a good fit.

       5) I LOVE to look out the window.  I don’t go crazy barking or anything, I just like to watch
           what's going on.

       6) I’m not incredibly needy but I do love cuddles and kisses (and now my breath is minty fresh!).

That’s all for now.
