Brandy 13-229

This is Brandy, a beautiful 11 year old golden retriever. The background on her is she, and a companion of hers for 7 years (a Chihuahua) were surrendered after several years of ownership and being together due to not having enough time and both were surrendered to the local shelter. It is amazing where and how some of our magnificent golden rescues come from and why. Never ceases to amaze most of us.  This is our mission, RAGOM, to rescue and re-home these great dogs. What matters is they are safe, in RAGOM and on their way to the best golden life we can try to give them, no matter why or what age(s). We are amazed how well this girl is doing in a short amount of time after so many years in a home and then into an overcrowded shelter and now here with us. She, as you can see, melted our hearts seeing her right off the get-go. Just nothing better than a loving senior to enjoy, love, pamper and foster. To give them our best care, vetting and comfort. In a brief summary to this point, here are basics on our girl:

  • She is 11 years young (amazing does not look that)
  • She is spayed and current on all vaccinations and microchipped
  • She is dog friendly
  • She is cat friendly
  • She loves and is great around all children whom we have met
  • She crates fine and would be ok with free roam
  • She is a great size, 55#
  • She walks beautifully
  • She is fully housebroken
  • She is great meeting strangers and new people here and out on walks
  • She is fine with steps/stairs
  • Beautiful frosting on her face J

In the short amount of time we have had her, she is about the best you can ask for.

Introductions to 2 other dogs (corgi and border collie/eskie mix) and 3 cats were totally fine.

Brandy is mindful of others. She enjoys being in the same room/area with you but not real clingy, just a true companion girl. She loves the typical golden ‘roll’ in the grass. Took her to the groomers and helped get her all spiffed up and she did really well with all the noises, blowers, etc. and now she is so clean and gorgeous. This is one super great foster.

Brandy's first day in Wisconsin

Friday, September 13, 2013

[T]oday is a wonderful day for our Miss Brandy girl, as she went ‘home.’ She is also making this a very “Happy  Birthday for her adoptive dad as well (HAPPY BIRTHDAY JERRY).  Adoptive mom is head over heels with her already, as is dad. What a lovely day with one of the most kind and loving families I have met. (I somehow sensed this prior to meeting them!). They drove over five hours to come to meet our lovely senior golden girl and came fully prepared for her in ‘hopes’ that all would work out. They drove down a day ahead of time. We all got to enjoy an afternoon together visiting and getting to know each other and Brandy was very taken with them both. The family spent the night and this morning the whole “family” (now 3) is headed home today.

This is yet another special ending/beginning for a senior golden who now, will have one of the best forever homes.  She will be by a lake and have someone with her all day every day. (She will have a fenced yard too.) It just does not get better than that.

Story: This family (as many) was initially looking at a much younger dog, perhaps 6 or so. [H]owever, with their time to research and read, and ask great questions—[T}heir patience, willingness to listen and review all aspects, (good and poor)  of a senior golden like Brandy, it was with true heartfelt, honest, and informative decision, that this family decided just how wonderful it could and will be to have such a great rescued golden retriever, no matter what age.

None of us know how much time we have with any of our dogs, and with these seniors (I so adore), ‘what you see is what you get.’ If you have 3-4 more years great and if not, you will have known the true love these seniors give to you. What YOU can give back to them and what THEY give back to YOU, and so, so much more.♥   If you have decided not to look at some of the senior golden’s on the list, please reconsider and perhaps take a chance and ask the foster about that senior golden? Brandy really impressed this family, as much as she did us in foster care, just being the stunning senior she is.

What a real privilege to be able to get to get to know these magnificent senior golden retrievers and thank you so much RAGOM for caring for ALL of these dogs in need of rescue. Brandy girl, I really do miss you and love you. I see the love and commitment you will have for the rest of your life now to share …. with your new family.  J

Update on our girl from her surgery. Brandy is all healed up and stitches coming out Thursday. We did send a couple biopsies out and they have returned. The mouth/gum growth was in fact an ‘epulis’ and nothing to be concerned about as big as it was. It was lasered off and you can hardly tell now. Her mouth feels much better now and she is eating just fine.

[see:  http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/mouth/c_dg_epulis#.Uh0nri0o4ok ] for more information on fibroma-epulis.  (peripheral odontogenic fibroma).

Her other growth on her leg/elbow was a soft tissue sarcoma (about gum ball size) thankfully it was only a stage 1 and was completely removed and margins were great. There is a less than 10% chance of this coming back and if so, would be the same area. The vet has no concerns about this at all and thank goodness for dogs like this to come into RAGOM and not suffer or have issues like this being ignored and not treated. J Actually Brandy would make a great therapy dog, even though a senior. ♥

Brandy is about the nicest foster ever. With this horrible heat and humidity, she still does fine. She, like the other dogs, are always inside enjoying the air conditioning; are walks are cut quite short these past few days but Brandy enjoys them and she is a total delight to walk.

[With the medical needs with of this great golden girl, we are most grateful
and dependent on sponsors and donations to help with these magnificent
rescue goldens and help with the costs of their care.

Can you help?  More to come on this wonderful senior golden girl.]

Brandy is thriving in foster care and is waiting for that forever home….she is in great condition now and is not in need of anything but love, patience and that great home.

This Labor Day weekend she met and played with our grandchildren and very much enjoyed them and they did her. So gentle yet wants to run and play. She has such great manners around food and around children. Loves to meet new people. Such a well behaved, lovely golden girl. She continues to do fine on her Taste of the Wild (Venison) diet. She takes treats very nicely, enjoys cottage cheese and hotdogs. With the horrible heat and humidity, and hair growing out from being shaved, she gets a couple Benadryl a day in her food. Seems about everything has some itching of some sort right now, people and pets! With the storm last night (which didn’t last very long) the only thing Brandy did was stand up next to me in bed for a ‘pet of reassurance’ from me and then laid back down. She heard it, checked me out with her head next to me in bed, let me know everything is ok, and back to sleep on her blanket/bed. How sweet it that?  Wow, what great golden.

Brandy is doing so well!  Such a delight to foster.  Last Friday the 16th we had a couple growths removed, one being an ‘epulis’ which is a growth on the gum in the mouth.  This was lasered off and looks great.  I am sure her mouth feels much better, and all clean. Her teeth are not bad at all, just some a little worn down from “use.”  To be safe of course that was sent off to make sure it was ok (biopsy).  Her ears and everything were good.  Brandy also had a growth on her left elbow which was also taken off.  Not sure what it was but that along with the epulis were sent in for testing.  The results should be any day now.  Brandy has a good appetite and nice manners.  She will sit for her treat too.  She enjoys her daily walks (providing it is not 90 and horrible humid out).  Loves people she meets and her tail just wags away! At this time still being new in our home, she is still crated in a large wire crate in the kitchen/dining room area where we do all of our fosters and they can see everything going on, have the comfort of the TV/music and see everyone else around.  She seems fine with this and goes in crate no problem.  She is only crated about 5 hours in the mornings from about 6:30-noon is all. I really feel complete free roam would be just fine for this girl.  We are just being safe with 2 other dogs.  She totally ignores the cats, even the ‘nutty’ one.  So zero concerns there.  She really enjoys being brushed.  She licks her paws some, as does our other dog, so we make sure and wipe them off when they come in.  She does fine going for a ride in the car/truck.  Enjoys looking out the window.  Sometimes if I have the leash on ready to go for all of them, she will pick up hers and put in her mouth in anticipation……. it is so cute J.  She has a gentle mouth and takes treats nicely.  She is such a nice size, just a little bigger than our other girl Maggie. (about 55# or so) .  She does steps and everything else just fine.  She will ‘chase’ the ball in fetch however, she has not brought it back to me yet!  So cute to see her play.  Her energy level is wonderful, just right for a dog this age.  What is so darn wonderful about fostering these seniors……nothing better. Active when you can but otherwise so enjoy to just chill out and relax! So many GREAT qualities for these seniors…….. they deserve so much.

She is mellow inside and does not get into anything.  She respects babygates too. We have only heard her bark a couple times and she was just chiming in with ours who were barking at who-knows-what…… very seldom.  I have seen no problems with stairs at all.  She also really enjoys my husband too, and of course, the more pets which comes with sitting by him.  Kids are fine and she basically loves people and attention.  She is not the ‘need, under-your-feet’ type of girl, just would like to be in the same area.  She is going to make some family very very happy and see what a great senior golden really is.  Would she like to jump up by you on the couch given a chance?  You bet! We do not offer that with our fosters here due to so many types of different families out there, but she would snuggle give the chance!

Amazingly enough, she is not showing any ‘emotional’ baggage which, I find so remarkable.  So truly shocking is how ‘these dogs’ who have been in a home for ‘several years’ and get dumped off at a shelter, take life in stride and perhaps hoping for the best (even having come in with a companion of several years too).  If you are looking for a superior senior golden companion, she is the girl. ♥

Another hand and cat house too!
