Bridget now goes by Brittee, she came in from Rapid City, SD from a wonderful couple (Mike and Karen). Karen does a lot of rescue work out in this area and happens to get the most incredible goldens. We happened to be in Rapid City this past weekend and we picked Brittee up not knowing a whole lot about her. I kept thinking, I wonder if I should tell hubby that we are going to bring an unknown dog home with us that lived at a breeder's home, never been in-doors, never been in a car, and was supposedly given to the HS because she was aggressive to animals. Nay, why tell him all the bad stuff right off, lets just enjoy the 9.5 hour drive home wondering what we had done if it was going to be that way.
But know, Karen gave Brittee a nice long bath and she did great, was very scared, but never showed any aggression. Karen then dried her in an area that had three other dogs and 4 cats. HELLO, surrendered because of aggressive to animals. Well HELLOOOO no, not the case at all. We now believe she was surrendered because she no longer could produce puppies. She is 7 ½ years old!
We left Rapid City at 1:00 in the afternoon and Karen met us at the college we were visiting. She jumped out to greet us, however terrified she still did. We had her get in the next car and off we went. Poor Brittee sat the whole 9.5 hour trip home. I would get her to lie down next to me for a few minutes but she would be stiff, then for a second she would relax and then pop back up. Man it was a long trip for her and me. I was so worried since she did not sleep for a minute, me either for that matter. 9:45 in the evening we drove into town and wondered what would lie ahead. Remember we are still unsure about her aggression to animals so we decide to error on the side of caution and introduce her very slowly to the crew. Again, HELLO, nothing, she is like what ever, I am scared. Help me. We pottied had a bit to eat and before we knew it, it was 11:30.
Brittee found Mistee Bubbles crate and decided that was where you could find her if you needed her. She laid down and we all went to bed. The next morning I found her still just laying there waiting for someone to come out. We went out potty and started her first full day as a RAGOM dog.
So what we know about Brittee, she is 7 at least, very sore ears, teeth need a cleaning and she needs to be spayed. Brittee is like a Puppy Mill mom so she is going to need another dog to give her guidance. Trust me she needs guidance. If she feels trapped she gets so scared, Rick her foster dad still terrifies her and he is home all day with her. But that is slowly changing. Let’s face it she still runs from all of us, but will come around. She knows how to get in and out of doors, which I think is a plus. She no longer has to be on a leash when outside because she will come when we call her, but she really does not stray far either. She is slowly learning the ins and outs of the world. Last night she figured out that she could go into our oldest daughter's room and sleep on this comfortable bed with her and Sophee Bear the RAGOM rescue that Cindee adopted.
We have an incredible girl here, she is still working on potty training, she still has an accident a day if we are not being vigil about her signs, but we almost have them down. She has a long way to go before she trusts.
Brittee loves being petted, loves her hair brushed as long as you go slow and gentle, does not mind her toe nails cut and is just there to please if she allows you to get close. If you are willing to give this special SD girl a try, please send placement
ragom [dot] org a note and we will meet with you.
A big thank you to Karen and Mike for finding her and helping us get her this past weekend.
