8/29/06: Brittney, one of our southern belles has arrived in the Northland. She is a four year old purebred Golden. Her father, Golden Valentino is a Light Golden, and her mother Pretty Little Lu Lu is a Golden. As you can see in her pictures she is a very petite, light colored little girl with a cute underbite. She made the trip north yesterday arriving tired and very frightened. Being from a puppy mill her world currently does not make sense to her. She has determined that inside her crate is her safe place. Initially outside her crate she trembles in fear. She tends to seek comfort from people and other dogs. I've noticed a slight reduction in her fear in the past 24 hours and also witnessed a few short bursts of playfulness. Brittney will be visiting the vet tomorrow for a wellness check prior to her spay surgery which should take place soon.

I'll update this posting with the results of her check up, and her progress assimilating into the good life.

Well, Mommy Brittney has found her forever home when she is done helping her babies grow up to be big strong puppies. Brittney has fought this mother battle for long enough and now that her milk is finally coming in we are going to start weaning the pups so she can get spayed and then head to her forever home in Wisconsin.

Her new Mom M. met Brittney way back in September and has made the decision that Brittney is the one for her. So we will continue to give Brittney positive reinforcement on not needing our attention all the time. However, when she goes to her forever home she will get ALL of M.’s attention so I know she will be fine and loved!

Thank you to everyone that has shown interest in our Britt, she is a great mom and will be heading home just in time for Christmas!

Brittney continues to do really well. We are working on the sitting and no mouthing in the morning, but she is just so excited and hates to compete for the attention. She is doing better on feeding her puppies now that they are out of the box during the day and just hanging out so Britt can see exactly what is going on. She is also eating on her own now which is another great feat for us. I thought I would have to hand feed her for life.

We are going to start trying to get her to go for a walk. She is scared of a leash and when we go out now she drops to the ground and will not budge. I am hoping this is just because the puppies are inside and she does not want to leave them.

So if you are looking for a well-behaved house-trained puppy mill girl, please give Brittney at least a second look. She is so wonderful and always has a smile because of her under bite!

Britt continues to do the best she can with taking care of her babies. Her milk has not come in as well as we had hoped so we are helping feed her pups. But she is still cleaning them at all times so that is a good thing.

Britt has decided in the mornings when we get up for the day things need to be all about her. She really needs some one on one attention for a good rub down and lots of love. If you do not give it to her right away she jumps gently up to make sure you notice her. Plus she will grab your arm very gently so you know she means business.

She is very gentle and docile. In fact we had so many people over this weekend the dogs were treated with raw bones, and Britt would take hers into the whelping box. It did not matter that there was a two-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl in the box with the pups and her. She just did her own thing. The kids were able to pet Britt, love Britt and even touch her bone without a noise of any kind.

Britt is so loving that is all she wants in this world is to become a family member that everyone will love and cherish. She will do fine with another dog or without. If you have an alpha dog, she is very submissive and would do fine. If you have no other dog she will do fine as long as she is able to socialize at a dog park or at some kind of training. She really wants to please everyone.

Please if you have ever thought about taking on the joy of a puppy mill dog, give Brittney a chance. Yes, you will have to wait for Christmas, but it will be so worth the wait, you will not be disappointed at all! Brittney just wanted to say Happy Halloween to everyone. She does not have a funny costume because she is so busy feeding her babies, but she wanted to let everyone know she is doing well and trying to keep the weight on. Must be a nice problem to have--I am always working to get it off!

The puppies want to eat all the time and Brittney is a fussy eater, so we are pulling out all the good ol' fashioned punches to keep her eating all day long. I think Brittney would like to sleep most of the night, but the puppies keep her (and me) up a lot at night. I have been told to get sleep because in a few weeks we will be getting none – oh no! Anytime Brittney or another puppy move, we have a few puppies that scream because they were moved--bunch of drama kings and queens if you ask me.

Wow, has Brittney blossomed the last two days! A couple days ago she started coming out of the whelping box and playing with us and actually going outside to go potty on her own – no leash, no begging, no pleading – just here I come, we are going outside. The tail is going a mile a minute from side to side.

She still has diarrhea so we watch that very carefully but she is so happy go lucky. Now if I could just get her to eat without having to hand feed her. But at this point, it is all about Brittney until the pups start getting weaned.

Brittney was 50 pounds at the vet and I am guessing she is a little lighter than that, but she looks good and she is so happy. Today she got a nice warm bath to get her bottom clean and looking fresh again. Now, that really put some pep in her step. It would put pep in my step too, getting all that green goo off!

Brittney is looking for someone to love her and make her feel special. She is so easy; she will just come to you and sit down to get all her pets. When you do not give enough love she will put one paw on you and beg for more. It is so gentle that you may not even notice. She does want someone that will allow her on the couch to cuddle with, so please keep that in mind if you would like to visit her. She really just wants to be with her human.

Brittney is such a good mother, but then again I knew she would be because she loves being by your side. She has kept all her puppies clean and has done a wonderful job of feeding them. Her only downfall is she only uses one side of nipples at a time; she could feed all the pups at once if she would lay right for them. Oh well. Would you believe she lost 15 pounds! She has this beautiful waistline, but very sagging boobs. What is a gal supposed to do?

We saw the vet yesterday and she is fine. Foster mom was just worrying about nothing. We gave her a good dose of love and some more food – we ended up giving her about ½ cup an hour for the first few hours and then whatever she ate. She is eating at least 6 cups of food right now to keep her milk coming in.

Brittney will do wonderful in a house with a dog (she will totally ignore the other dog) or without another animal as long as the human shows her the way to a good life. Wherever Brittney goes she will need help in building her confidence and showing her the world in a nice and gentle way. She really is a great dog.

Brittney 06-361 and Buck 06-364, two puppy mill dogs, had a chance encounter while being over-nighted BEFORE coming into RAGOM's care. We now have puppies from these two.

The pups started coming into this world at 10:14 on 10/24 and finished at 4:41 am on 10/25 – we had a fun 6 hours!

I know Britt is still a mess in this picture, but I wanted to show the babies. More will come tomorrow when everyone is cleaned up. I also have a picture of dad so you can see these are pure Golden’s, through and through.

Britt did well yesterday without foster mom at home. Rick and the kids actually got her to go potty out in the back yard with Coal and Mistee so we will continue on working at that. We definitely know her sign now – she will do a little walk around the area and then head out to the living room and if you are nowhere to be found, she will potty. But for the most part she does well going outside as long as we watch for her signs.

She was really fickle about eating yesterday when I was gone so as soon as I got home this morning I got her to eat, still it was not a ton so we are thinking she may be getting closer and closer to the due date, but in all honestly it is NOT until later this week so we will just keep making progress with her on the security stuff and wait patiently for the pups.

I was asked if Brittney should be with another dog or is she okay to be on her own. Steve (Brittney’s first foster dad) said he did not think she needed another dog. I thought that could not be right because she is puppy mill. Well, he may be right. She does not have much to do with the Newfs. In fact, she has nothing to do with them; she would rather be right next to a human for comfort. She is going to need a human that will help her become brave each and every day. The first week or so of her transition will be tough, but she is such an easy girl that she will make someone very happy!

Mistee Bubbles here....mom is out walking momma Brittney again! I swear Britt gets to go on all the walks and I get none - what is that all about? Oh yeah, mom said that it's the only way she can get her to go potty. So off for a quick walk and so I thought I would take over and tell you what I have seen with Momma Brittney.

She is a bore. Yep, she loves her crate or mine, and yes she thinks she can sleep in mine when I am not in there. My mom, Connie, says I have to share because Momma Brittney is so big that she gets hot in her plastic crate. So I am being nice for the time being and letting Brittney use my house when she gets too warm in hers.

Foster mom started a foster pool on when Momma Brittney will have her first pup – she is going to let the winner of the pool pick the first born pup's name – I have my guess in – I hope these pups are born tomorrow at noon so I can start playing with them by tomorrow at 5. Oh wait – she has to wait to have them until at least the 25th of October and than I have to wait a few weeks until they want to play. How BORING.

Anyhoo, Momma Brittney is so easy going and she is doing great and looks forward to having a family of her own, so if you are willing to wait for this mom that just wants to be a dog, please contact placementatragom [dot] org so we can set up a meeting.

Brittney decided to go on a big adventure to Chuck and Don’s to do a meet and greet. Things went well with her and she had a lot of fun going out and meeting the people. Of course we had to keep telling her to slow down since she is an expectant mom now. She does so well when she is around other dogs and oh boy did she love the attention that was showered upon her by all the people. Brit is very scared when coming into a new situation but she warms up fairly quickly. Within 30 minutes her tail was starting to come up and there were some very good wags going on.

Brit is just starting to show, and she will start meeting with her new foster mom this week so they can get used to each other before the big change happens on the 15th. I am very nervous for my girl, but I think with Brit and I meeting Connie and Rick that is going to help both of us get over the transition of moving.

Brittney has been told she has to start eating more. We will work up to, get this, 8 cups of food a day! I was even told for a few days it could go up to 10 cups a day. WOW – what is going to come out of this girl, elephants? She is not doing very well with the change to Iams Puppy so Connie is calling Pet Chef Express on Monday to try and get some Pet Chef Puppy and then we will start adding that VERY slowly and see if her delicate system can tolerate this food a little better.

Connie and I have decided we will be grandparents at the ripe old age of early 40’s (Connie turns 41 today and I (Steve) turn 43 on October 30). Wow it’s a good thing this is NOT a real grand baby human – scary!

I am sure Connie will find something to say after each of our meetings this week, so check back often. If you are interested in Brit, please send placementatRagom [dot] org a note.
