6/19/05: Can any of you tell me why people couldn't see the beautiful dog that lay beneath the mats, dirt and ticks?

Introducing Brodie (he's the one on the steps in the picture below). These pictures were all taken within approximately 5 hours of bailing him out of the shelter, and about 3 hours of Mike and I bathing, brushing, cutting, bathing - etc. etc.

When my friend in Boxer rescue called me yesterday, it was 1:47 p.m., I hadn't showered yet, Rowan 05-153 was needing my time, I had laundry piled high from before I went to ND to get Rowan a week ago, we needed to clean our hairy house and I faltered when she said "Karen, this is Shelly - I'm at the shelter and they've got a Golden that is scheduled to be euthanized at 4:00 p.m. - you need to see this guy. He's a mess, but he needs you." I looked at the quote on my fridge that I often read as a reminder of my duty...."Those who have the ability to take action - have the responsibility to take action!" Well - off I went, crate, leash, collar, treats, cell phone and RAGOM contacts list in hand. The rest is history.

Thanks everyone, for your inspiration and allowing me the opportunity to be a part of RAGOM.

Editor's note: I believe we should be thanking Karen, not the other way around!!

Introducing Brodie. We don't know his name, so came up with Brodie. He seems to like it!

I picked him up yesterday (June 18th) on his 9th day at the shelter, as well as his date for euthanasia. The shelter is overfull, many kennels housing multiple dogs - which is against policy. Brodie was dirty, full of mats and ticks and I guess they figured, who would want to adopt this guy? But oh, what a difference a day makes. He is as beautiful inside as he is outside. Loves our resident 3 Goldens and visiting Chocolate Lab and is very polite and tolerant of our other foster boy - Rowan 05-153, the exuberant 14 month old.

He met our neighbors and their two boys (age 7 and 10) and sat very politely, without being asked, to receive his welcome scratches and hello's. He was very happy to see the kids. The 10 year old said "what an awesome dog!"

Don't know his age, but he's not too old, just very light in color. He has beautiful teeth, AND he's already neutered. Will let you know what the vet says tomorrow and what age she estimates him at. He'll need his heartworm test, and a few other things - but hopefully he'll be ready to find his forever family just as soon as she says Okay!

Stay tuned for more on Brodie.
