5/28/06: Hi everyone! It?s me ? Brook and I am back. Did you miss me? Let me tell you I sure did NOT miss not having my picture on this page! My adoptive family had to give me back to RAGOM because of some serious medical issues that came up in their family and all the pets had to go. They loved me dearly and had a hard time saying good bye. There were lots of tears on everyone?s part and I miss them. But on the good side, I got to go back to the foster home that I had before. It will take a bit to get settled in here and to re-learn what my foster siblings are like but it should be a bit easier because I already know my foster mom. I even remembered her when she came and picked me up, that made my adopted family happy, that even though they had to say good bye to me I still remembered my foster mom.

I got to my foster home and I was once again my full of energetic self. I tried to get my younger foster sibling to rough house with me, well, let?s just say he didn?t remember me and did NOT want to play like that right then. Everyone has now settled down a bit but both my foster brother and I have to wear a tether for the day! One lousy disagreement between us and now we both have to behave!

Watch for another update that talks about all that I learned from my family. I know lots of commands! One thing for sure, whoever adopts me next needs to be an experienced dog person. I like to push the limits at first and I also need a family that will keep me busy and keep my commands polished.

Until Later, Brook

P.S. Here are some new pictures of me! I have gotten darker since I was last on this page.

Updates

Brook has been with us for just over three weeks and she has adjusted to her new home as well as any foster we have had. She is free to roam the house and has been absolutely perfect. We put a dog bed in the bedroom so she could be closer to us at night, but we think she prefers the firmer futon in the sunroom. She comes into the bedroom at night, but she sneaks out to the futon a little after the lights are out. Just before the coffee pot automatically kicks in, she sneaks back into the bedroom. Brook doesn’t think we know, but we hear her come in. What a cutie.

What every prospective family must know about Miss Brook is her athleticism and her love of running. She is a greyhound in a Golden body, and she can outrun a gazelle. We try to give a 4-mile run every day, but she needs to be on leash and neither of us can run 10 miles an hour anymore. What a pity. When she is free in our fenced-in yard, she literally flies around. She has an all-out gallop that is second to none. Because of her speed and love of running, I have been whistle-training her in case she ever gets loose. One blow on the whistle, and if she comes immediately she gets a jock-pot treat. So far, so good. Only once did she hesitate before coming to me immediately.

Miss Brook is a fast learner; perhaps too fast at times. She finds trading to be a bit easy, so it is our challenge to keep her challenged. This may sound like a tedious task, but it is fun for all of us and it keeps her and us on her/our toes. She already knows all of the commands, and we keep reinforcing them in different ways to keep her sharp.

Not only is she athletic and energized, but Brook is also a very affectionate dog. She likes to be near people, loves Mr. Brush, and enjoys a tummy rub at any occasion. A couple of things to remember if you are considering Miss Brook. She loves and needs exercise. A fenced-in yard is a must for her to be content and happy. She won’t run all of the time when she is outside, but she needs to stretch out and go all-out on occasion.

But, she also needs to go on long walks or runs with someone. A person who can devote the time to take her out with be rewarded many times over. After a long walk, dinner and when she is settling in the evening, Brook really blossoms into that wonderful, sweet Golden girl.

Thinking about her? Call or email RAGOM. In the least, come over and meet Our Miss Brooks. She’d love to see you.

Brook was invited to come to Zoom’s house for as long as she wants to stay and she gladly accepted. Brook has been here for a week and what a wonderful, well-behaved dog she has become. We have known her for some time, but she has matured into a delightful Golden girl that is well trained and responsive. She walks and runs beautifully on her lead, and enjoys the fenced-in yard where she can really stretch those long legs. She is a strawberry blonde beauty, about 60 pounds, (who could add a pound or two and look even better), athletic, and spirited. She plays nicely with Zoom, and we have not had any altercations, rough housing, or even temperamental behavior while she has been here. She stays in the sunroom during the day and keeps her room clean. She sleeps through the night and only gets up when she hears activity. She loves a morning walk and a treat before we leave for the day. In the evening, she is excited upon our return, after which she gets in a long run or walk before dinner. We think she needs a solid routine to be at her best, but don’t we all. She loves the outdoors and the more she gets out the better she likes it.

Last summer we had her over for a week while her foster was on vacation, and since that time we noticed a change in her. Her nervous energy is dramatically reduced from the levels we recall. As I write this, she is sleeping or resting next to the chair at 8:30 PM. She is showing her true Golden colors; she loves to be around people and readily shows her affection.

I think she would be a wonderful addition to a home that can get her lots of exercise and attention, but with gentle discipline and reward. She loves to have a job. She would be perfect for agility training or a running companion, for example. She does really well with Zoom; when the mix is right for her and another dog, she loves to have a companion around.

Stay tuned for more on Our Little Miss Brook.

Hello again –

I know, you just heard from me last night. Well, mom and I went to the Doggie Palooza today and I had to share my exploits there. I got lots of treats and toys. And get this – I got a BATH! If I had known that was in the works I would have never consented to going. And mom even got pictures! Jeepers.

I did find the agility obstacles after having that dreaded bath so that made up for some of it. I got to go through the tire jump again, I jumped a standard jump with the pole almost as high as it could go (one notch below the top) and flew over that, and mom is so proud of me – I went through the tunnel. OK. it was a very short tunnel and I could see and hear my mom at the other end, but I still did it. I got lots of hugs and gave lots of high fives for doing that.

Here are some pictures of me during my bath and one with my mom after I was all spiffed up. Can you tell that I did NOT enjoy it and had quite a few talks with those who did this to me? It was worth it – I admit it – but still.

Hi everyone –

Brook checking in here. I got to go to open doggie gym tonight again. Once again I had a blast. I did the teeter totter and I tried the tunnel--still not ready to go through that yet, even with mom at the other end! Just give me time and I will do it. Though I did the standard jumps again and the tire jump lots of times. Worked lots on obedience and following commands.

There were other dogs there and I am getting better with settling down around them and not thinking that I have to play with them or bark at them all the time. Practiced lots of obedience commands. We all practiced the sit, stay for one minute--caught on to that real quick. Then we all did the sit, down, stay for 3 minutes, and that was easy too. My handler and the other handlers loved my eyebrows as I was lying there. I may have been down but I was still thinking!

Here are some action pictures of me doing agility obstacles. Can you tell I am having FUN? I am tired now. Off to an early bedtime, maybe? I overheard mom and the owner talking about another agility facility up in the Cities that we might get to go to tomorrow. Should I be dreaming of obstacles?

Sweet dreams!

Hi everyone. I am back from vacation. I hung out with another foster family for a week while Mom was gone. Did I have fun or what? I was the perfect house guest with the exception of my barking, but we are working on that. The resident dog and I got along great--even better than my current foster brother.

We found another job that I might be good at--as a running partner for someone training for a marathon! My dad who I was vacationing with took me out running five miles each day, and I didn’t even break a sweat! In fact I was all for the swimming that I did after the run! After the run the swim actually did me in pretty good.

Any runners out there? It seems that if I run at least five miles each day it does take some of my energy out of me. I can do 26 miles, I just know I can!

I’ll be dreaming of a running partner!

Well, I had my wellness exam yesterday and wow was that the fastest exam ever! I could have told them that I was just fine medically, my family saw to that but I guess I still needed to go in. I am current on all my shots, heartworm negative, don’t have worms and have clean ears! I weighed in at a healthy weight of 77 pounds. All I walked out with was my next heartworm preventative and some Frontline (OK, someone found a tick on me).

Here are some of the commands that I know: sit, down, stay, stand, shake, high five, high ten, speak, shhh, and kisses. I am working on off, because I do like to give people hugs and I know that not everyone likes a hug from someone as big as I am. I also know hand signals for sit, down, stay, and stand. My previous family discovered that I have been electric collar trained for hunting. I do like to track things, though I get distracted at times by other wildlife, that was what I was training in with the search and rescue group before I had to come back into foster care.

I do have somewhat of an issue with other dogs and food. I seem to do fine with humans around my food bowl while I eat but get kind of growly when other dogs come by. Because of this, I now am being hand fed by my mom in a different room. My mom makes me do lots of commands as she feeds me. I guess that is OK, I do need to keep up on my talents. That is why I need a dog savvy family besides someone who will give me a job to keep me busy and out of trouble.

Until later… Brook
