It is with tears and a shattered heart that I write this update as our little Brooklyn crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning. My heart aches that she had to make that journey without us by her side to reassure her that we loved her and tell her we would see her again soon. Her poor little body had been through so much that the exact reason is not known but the Dr. believes that she passed quietly in her sleep. The heart worm she fought to overcome, failing kidneys and the neglect of her previous owners were probably all contributing factors but in the end it doesn't matter. She is in a better place where she will not have to suffer any longer. I still remember my shock at the homely girl we took in. So skinny and dirty and what is with her teeth and tongue? But what a beauty she turned out to be!! Oh, she still had those messed up teeth and the malformed tongue but she had spunk! She loved life and she loved us and we knew there was no way we were going to let her go. She had found her home and we were so hoping to be able to look at that funny little face for a long time but it was not to be. But we cherish every single second that we got to be part of her life and will hold her in our hearts forever. So, goodbye our little "Brookie Brooke". Please know that we did the best we could for you and if we had known that you were going to leave us so soon, we would have been there with you. Give Bella a big, wet doggy kiss for us and we look forward to the day that we can all be together again. We love you baby girl!!

Hi everyone! Sorry it has been so long since I have written but we have had a crazy household for a few weeks. Something about a wedding but I don't know what that is. Anyway, during this "wedding" I had to go spend a couple nights at another house and it was kind of scary for me. The lady was really nice and gave me lots of attention but I couldn't figure out why dad would leave me. So, I sat at the sliding door watching for him to come back for quite some time!! Finally, I got over it and had a good time. There was a young dog there and man was she full of energy!! We got along great but boy-o-boy was I glad to see dad when he came back!!! Just about wiggled right out of my skin!!

Before that we had another foster girl, Sandy 09-126, stay with us for a couple weeks till she found her permanent foster home. She was really nice but boy.....I have never seen a dog with so much fluffy fur!!! Mom spent alot of time brushing her to get her all pretty for her new forever home. Someone is going to be lucky to get her because she loves her people and loves attention. I got pushed out of the way a few times but that is OK since she didn't get much attention in her "pre-RAGOM" life. I knew that mom would make time for just me and she did. We would sneak up to the bedroom and she would let me get on the bed so we could snuggle!!! That was worth waiting for!!
I am feeling really good and still eating great too. Some of my favorite "extras" are green beans and cooked spaghetti noodles!! I just go nuts for them. I have to go back to the vet in a few weeks for some more blood tests to make sure the pesky heart worms are all gone and to see how my kidney functions are doing. I will be sure to let you know what he has to say. All good things...I am sure of it!!
Keep checking out my page and all the other available dog pages!! So many loving dogs waiting for someone to give them a chance at a new life! Just do it!!!!

Just wanted to check in and give you an update on Brooklyn's vet visit. He was very pleased with what he saw! She continues to gain weight and he cannot believe the change in her. The results of the blood tests were good. The numbers for her kidney functions were almost the same as a month ago......higher than they should be but not real concerning. We will probably never know whether the damage is from the heavy load of heartworms she had or just the result of bad nutrition in her "pre-RAGOM" life. He didn't feel there was any need to put her on a special low protein diet at this point since she is continuing to gain weight, feeling good and the numbers remain where they are.
She will have to go back May 1st for another heartworm test. Although he did not see any microfilaria (baby worms) in her blood, the tests were not all clear so she will need a recheck.
She has been doing so well and continues to surprise us everyday!!

Hey everyone... sorry I haven't written in so long. We had a beautiful girl, Romy, 09-061, for a couple weeks so we had a full house!! She is a big girl but I really liked her. I played with her a little but she was so big that I got a little scared, even though she was very gentle when she played. Plus the "old timers" around here don't appreciate it when the younger dogs try to wrestle! Party poopers!!
I have been feeling just great! I even got to go to PetSmart last weekend to meet all kinds of dogs and people. Everyone thought I was really cute and couldn't believe how healthy I looked. I got along with all the dogs......no problem. What I really liked were the birds and big rats that were in cages!! I tried to scratch my way to them until FM told me I could not do that. I just wanted to get a little closer to them!!
Oh, and I got to see that handsome Harley, 09-035, again and he looks just great! He might only have 3 legs but he gets around really good! Someone is going to be very lucky to get that big hunk of a lovable dog!!!
I met a woman who knows the man that found me out in the country so I told her to give him a big kiss from me to say thank you. Thanks to him, and my SUPER DUPER sponsors, I am back to my healthy self!! I like to roll on my back and nip at mom's ankles!! She thinks it is pretty funny too. Oh, and I discovered the joy of chewing on bones! My sister Bailey was hiding them under her dog bed so she could have them all to herself. Well, I showed her and nabbed one of them!! Now she just lays and watches me so when I get up she can take it away from me. Sneaky old lady!!
I went to the vet today and got weighed. I gained 1 pound. Not much but all I am eating is my dog food with none of the "toppings" so everybody was happy that I gained a pound. Next Monday I have to go back in to have my blood tested so I will be sure to let you all know what the doc has to say. From the way that I feel, I think he will have good things to report.
Well, I think the old lady is outside so I better get back down stairs and get that bone again!! I will write again soon but in the meantime....... think SPRING!!

I am supposed to do WHAT with this???
Brooklyn is resting after a long day at the vet. The news was fantastic!! It appears the heart worm treatments are working. She didn't have to have another treatment but the Dr. started her on monthly heart worm pills. She will go back in a month to have her blood checked for the "baby heart worms" that apparently live in the bloodstream. It is all very confusing to me and Dr.'s don't always talk in terms I can understand but we agree that Brooklyn is a different dog! The numbers on her kidney function came in the lowest they have been and he is hopeful that with free access to water the numbers will continue to go down. So, it continues to be a wait and see game. With the changes he has seen, the Dr. now believes that he may have been correct with his initial guess at her age of around 6.
Brooke is happy, full of energy and eating really well. She even tries to play with me!! She didn't really understand what to do with toys as you can see in the picture! But eventually she decided it was kind of fun to catch it and chew on it. She did steal her foster sisters ball and chew on it behind the chair one night. Her favorite thing is for me to clap at her and pretend I am going to get her....that always gets her wound up and she runs around the living room and then jumps on the couch. She is a very funny girl!!
We stopped the high calorie food since she was gaining weight, as the high calorie food is high in protein which is not good for her kidneys. She now eats dry food with some "doggy gravy" and green beans.....she LOVES green beans and will not eat her food without some on top. And she goes nuts over cooked spaghetti! I have learned not to try and give it to her by hand as I almost lost some fingers when I did!!
We will keep you posted on anything new but for now things are looking great!!

I feel pretty, oh so pretty!!
Another great week has gone by and I have gained 2 more pounds!! Mom said now I have to learn how to eat my meals without the good tasting wet food.....that is not so good. But, I will give it a try!!I am really feeling better the last week or so. I have so much more energy and mom says a "spring in my step". I am still sleeping in the bedroom with everyone else at night but sometimes mom and dad will find me sleeping in my kennel. It is nice and cozy warm so I still like to go there once in awhile.....with the door open!! Last night I beat my sister Bailey up to the dog bed in the bedroom and she got a little cranky so mom had to bring the dog bed from the living room up so that we each had one. Bailey gets kind of weird when she is stressed and starts nibbling on things during the night. Things like bed comforters, rugs, a stray sock or even her dog bed. Guess that happens when you are almost 13 years old!!! So mom thought she better make sure she had HER bed to avoid the dreaded hydrogen peroxide drink!!! Yuck!!!I was trying to play with mom yesterday but still a little unsure how that works. She would clap her hands at me and I would act like I was going to get her. Then I went downstairs and just walked around the kitchen and living room barking. No reason......I guess I just liked the sound of my voice!! It sure made mom and dad laugh and drove my fur brother Bugsey crazy!!!!I got to meet a really cool guy the other night. Harley 09-035 (be sure and check out his page). He is a lovable big lug and everyone thinks that I am in lovvvvvvvvvvve with him just because I followed him all over with my tail wagging really fast. He had to have surgery to have his leg amputated so I am excited to see him when he comes to visit again. I hope he feels better soon! Someone is going to be very lucky to get him because he is really lovely and likes to be next to his people. And did I mention that he is a "hottie"?Well, that is about all till next week. I go the Dr. next Monday and he will give a good check over to see how my heart worm treatments have worked and check out my kidney functions. Ta Ta for now!!
This could be Mr. Right!! Harley 09-035

"What a cushie life"
Hey everyone! Great news to report today....I gained 2 whole pounds!!! Mom and dad could not be happier. Mom told me this morning to "think heavy" and it must have worked. I also ate all my breakfast at 7:00 which I don't usually do, so maybe that helped a little.
I have been feeling really great. Now I take mom for a walk instead of her taking me. I try my hardest to get her to run but she will not. She said that I should not be running but then I hear her telling dad that she is "too fat and too old to run". I love to go into the really deep snow drifts to do my business and that really does not make them happy. Then they have to follow me so they can pick up what I leave behind!! Mom was talking really funny last night after she was in snow up to her knees and had snow in her boots. Humans are sooooo high maintenance....... I don't have any problem with the snow.
AND, I have graduated to having free roam during the night. Mom was gone this weekend so dad let me stay out (he always feels bad for me when I have to be gated in a room by myself). I had no accidents and ended up going back into my room to sleep on the queen size bed. Hey, why sleep on the floor when there is a perfectly good bed going to waste?
I was really glad to see mom when she got home. I kept walking in front of her rubbing myself on her legs! She said I was silly and when she stopped petting me I gave her a few "head butts".....that got her started again. I got so excited that I almost stole the ball from my foster sister, Bailey. Well, until she gave me "the look" and then I decided it was probably best not to do that. So, I just did a little happy dance.
So, that is all for now. I will let you know next week if I gained any more weight. Keep your fingers and paws crossed.

This is Brooklyn and I am back!! Boy I had a couple bad days after my last treatment but I am feeling much better. The picture of me on my back was the night I got home.....I tried everything to get comfortable. Even my back and I have NEVER done that before. Mom and dad were so worried about me!!! It worked out good because they didn't make me go in my kennel that night. The put a gate across the spare bedroom door and let me sleep in there with a REAL bed and even a computer. Don't tell them but I did a little web surfing after they fell asleep!!! Wish I would have had their credit card number because I saw some sweeeeeeeeeeeeet stuff on line!!! And I haven't had to go in my kennel since then because I was such a good girl. Oh, I got sick one night but they weren't mad and I have gotten to sleep in that room every night.
I am eating really well also. The other picture I sent shows me getting a little something to eat. My foster sister Bailey, 08-283, showed me just the right way to get some people food!! She is 13 so she has been "around the block"!!! And I have been eating my dog food. I am not much of a morning eater but at night..............watch out!!! I eat all my food and act like I am still hungry. That gets me some green beans and other good stuff.
Mom said I don't have to go back to the Dr. for another month. When I do go back he will check me out to see if those nasty worms are gone and check my blood to see if the kidneys are shaping up. I will keep you posted on that.
Like I told you all before, I am a fighter and I will get better. With the love of my foster family, RAGOM, Dennis & Joanne M. and all of you, I will get strong and healthy again. I will get to take that long walk with my dad and foster siblings to the park to smell the grass and see all the people that are watching the ball game. To have them pet me and tell me what a beautiful dog I am. Oh, life is good!!

I feel good!

It's in the eyes!

I wanted to update you on Brooklyn's second treatment today. She is home but not feeling too good. Seems this second treatment is more difficult for her as she is very restless and uncomfortable. We have given her meds for the pain but she is continually on the move.....just cannot seem to find a spot where she wants to lay. Hopefully this will pass in the next day or so but it is hard to watch her. We have not had much luck in getting her to eat but did get her to eat a couple pieces of bread and some Charlie Bear treats. We just wanted to get SOMETHING in her stomach to avoid her medicine sitting in an empty stomach! Hopefully she will be feeling better in the morning and eat a good breakfast. She did weigh in this morning at the SAME weight she was two weeks ago so that is good. No more weight loss but really need to get the weight to go up. The vet says she should probably gain about 15 pounds to get to where she should be. Her blood tests were not as good as they were two weeks ago but the Dr. is hopeful that these numbers will come back down when the heart worms are gone. It is his belief that she is older than we first thought and could be over 10 years old. He just finds it hard to believe that a 6 year old dog could have the kidney damage that she appears to have. But again, we cannot be totally sure of the kidney damage until she gets these pesky heart worms out of her system. We will update you again soon and hopefully she will be back to her silly self. Thanks so much for reading her updates and a special thanks to her sponsors for helping her receive the care that she needs!! She is one special "golden girl".

Just a note to let you know that not much has changed with Brooke. Seems her coughing may have increased a little but with a calming touch, she quiets down pretty quickly. She has days when she eats like a horse and then days (like today) when we cannot get her to eat no matter what we try. But, we keep offering it to her in hopes that she will change her mind. She will go to see the vet tomorrow and he will check her out. We will let you all know what he has to say. So, we have included some pictures of her in the snow. She loves to go out in it except when the temp is so cold that it makes her feet hurt. But even then she goes out and does her job and comes quickly back in the house. She got to meet her Foster sister Violet's (08-582) new family and told me later that she thinks we found the perfect match for her!!! She was very happy! Everyone stay warm and we will update again soon when we have some news!!

Hi everyone....Brooke here. Mom said I could write my own update tonight, so here it goes.
First and foremost I want to give a very special thank you to my sponsors, Dennis and Joanne M.!! You are my Christmas angels and I want you to know that I am a fighter. I will make it through this heart worm stuff and become the strong dog that I used to be! I promise! And if mom continues to push the food, I will also be TWICE THE SIZE that I used to be!!! I hope I will be able to meet you in person someday and give you a big sloppy kiss!
I am feeling pretty good today and trying my best to eat....because if I don't, my foster sister Violet (08-582) will surely finish it!! Man, she is always hanging around waiting for me to finish!! And when I do, she feels it is necessary to lick my mouth! Guess that is her way of saying she is proud of me....or maybe she is just taking care of any crumbs.
Since I am so skinny, I don't really like this cold weather but mom will put on her coat and keep me company when I am doing my business. I like that! She is quite the cheerleader!
I guess that is all for now. I will send another update when I go to the Dr. next week. Keep your fingers (and paws) crossed that he tells me I am doing better and everyone have a great Christmas!!
Thanks again Dennis and Joanne M. Mom says you ROCK!!!
Brooke
