It's hard to believe 12 days ago Brooklyn came to our house. A bit of unknown and bit of wild child. I think she was so happy to be out of boarding she just wanted to show how much by pleasing us. This girl has come so far in such a short time. Sure there were some serious tussles with resident Jax, but they became fewer and fewer. She learned what was expected of her and started to understand what Barney 11-408 and Jax were telling her. She didn't need a tail to wag to let us know she was happy, you could just tell. For being so young she has gone through so much and come through smiling. She loves her runs in the field and knows when we are going. She learned to sit and wait for her food, to take treats nicely, to not jump up on Barney, when told "be nice" to walk away from Jax and the toy he had. She was able to destuff toys, chew on bones, run up and down the stairs and romp in the back yard. Sleeping in her bed was fine until morning, then it was up on the bed and snuggles and talking til I dragged myself out of bed. Always happy and always trying to please.
Since we are heading out of town and our grandson would be coming when we returned it was decided she needed to go to a new foster. I can't tell you how heart wrenching this can be. But I was grateful it meant she wouldn't have to go to boarding. Meanwhile I kept looking at aps. Couple people were out to other fosters and some weren't interested. I had about given up when I came across David and Joe. Previous dog owners, experienced, loved the husky mix, both worked out of their home, someone was usually around......could it be they would be available, would they be interested? Well, we lucked out. David has a 22 year old cat named Emma, so what ever dog joined their family would have to be good with her. Whew, Brookie was good with the cats. We talked on the phone and on Sunday they came to meet Brooklyn. When you have fostered awhile you get to know pretty soon if things look like they are gonna be a good match or not. I was a little taken aback when Brookie was so submissive when the guys came in, but she waited and then went to them. I don't know what her past experience with men has been, but I do know it will only be the best from here on in. I think we all knew it was gonna be a love match. Sometimes what looks good on paper doesn't cut it. This time it was good on paper and in person. This morning I had a voice mail and email that said they would like to bring Brooklyn into their family. HOORAY!!! So tonight David and Joe came and got their little girl. David is experienced and believes in letting the dog know what is expected and has great follow through. Joe is a softy:) So with the usual mixed emotions I said good bye to Brooklyn and hello to two great guys that I know I'll keep in touch with. I could not have asked for a better fit for Brookie and I know she will be loved, cared for, continued to be trained and best of all I know I can visit any time:)
You know when you find a family for your foster so many people tell you what a good job you've done. But deep down I know it's really just that you lucked out and found the family that didn't know the dog was looking for them. The only thing that makes saying good bye to your foster bearable is knowing they are going where they belong and when you can, you will have room for another foster to come your way.
So Barney 11-408, Jax and the cats and I say adieu to Miss Brooklyn and we'll see you around. Thanks to David and Joe for giving her such a wonderful home and love.
