Buddy 05-089

Profile

Buddy is here and he is a BIG boy. Last time he was weighed he tipped the scale at 144 lbs. He is tall and long, plus overweight. Definitely a gentle giant and typical Golden. Lady was not happy that was here but he put up with her. He has been living in a garage for 2 years so he had a very thick, dirty and matted coat. We spent a few hours brushing, cutting out mats and bathing and he now looks and smells much better! He has had minimal human interaction for the past 2 years, so he's very happy to receive love and give it right back :) He's been eating Tuffy's and has not been to a vet for shots for a long time - owners were not sure when and do not have his records. He has not been exercised because dad was too busy with work and mom was allergic to him. He didn't have toys because he tore them up, but we've found he loves toys of all kinds and is happily tearing them up here. He loves to chase tennis balls and is very good at bringing it back and dropping it. He can't do it for too long because he gets winded, but he loves it. He loves squeak balls and constantly rolls them under chairs, then barks at us to get them - I think this is a game. Sometimes he just barks for no apparent reason - guess he's just happy to be here and out of the garage. He likes raw hides and goes through those pretty fast. Also enjoys pulling stuffing out of toys. He has been so busy since he came I have not seen him ever take a nap. He is a beautiful blonde color and has been neutered. Has not had obedience training but knows sit. Likes to steal things and climbs up on the sofa to get the remote control. He gives it up easily and then waits for the next opportunity to steal it. For some reason the remote control is his absolute favorite thing. If he can't get that he'll settle for a dog brush or whatever else he can find. Sometimes he cries and whines when he can't see us or if he wants to go outside. We found out today that he even likes being vacuumed. We decided to try it because of the massive amounts of hair coming off of him and he didn't want us to stop! He will counter surf any chance he gets. He tried to jump on the bed today but he couldn't quite make it - guess he's a little too chubby. I really don't want to encourage him to jump because at his weight he could hurt himself.

Attached is a picture of Buddy relaxing in the trailer after a tough weekend at horse camp. As you can tell he's quite relaxed! He's lost weight, is now down to 109 pounds and is full of energy. He is always trying to get the other dogs in the house to play and is driving the "geriatrics" nuts. Just as when he did with his foster parents, he continues to shove bones under the couch, then barks at them so I have to retrieve them for him. Buddy has become a big snuggler as well as a caretaker for my almost-15 year old Golden. All is well with Buddy!

Buddy had his first look at a lake the wasn't frozen. We don't know his past exposure to water but he is definitely a lake dog. He spent as much time as he could in the 47 degree water. When he wasn't swimming he was standing with his body toward the incoming waves. As the waves would hit him he would stick his whole head under the water, come up, shake off and do it again. The sounds of the geese and loons calling seemed to be talking to him personally. He would stand with his ears cocked surveying the water for the offending fowl. If we hadn't had him tethered he would have been off in search of them. His fascination with water carries over to home. He loves to drink out of the hose when I'm filling his water bucket. I'm thinking as the weather gets hot we should add a baby pool to our yard so he can play in the water when we aren't at the lake. Buddy has blossomed into gentle giant that would make an entertaining addition to an adoptive home. We thought it was time for some new photos to show off the new Buddy. He looks much better with his coat clean and brushed and seems to have lost some weight.

After a week of grooming one handsome boy has emerged. His coat is a soft curly honey color. Buddy's owners orignially told us that he weighed 110 pounds. When we went to see him we figured he was 130 at least. I called the vet that he saw last Sept to see if his shots had been updated at that appointment (they weren't) and they said he weighed 144# at that visit. Last week we took him for his shots and check up and he weighed a whopping 158#. The vet said to put him on diet food immediately so we stopped at Petco. Buddy was just perfect there sniffing the other dogs, looking at toys, etc. He walks very well on a Gentle Leader and is getting to like seeing it come out because then he knows he gets to go somewhere. The vet said Buddy set a new record for a Golden, but in spite of his weight, he is in pretty good shape. She was glad that his hips and knees seem like they are good. The only thing she noticed is that he has a yeast infection in his ears so he is now on drops for that. Riley our grand dog came over to play and they were friends immediately. Poor Buddy can't keep up with Riley but he tries. We are getting him out for walks every day which he seems to enjoy, although he is tired at the end. Buddy is definitely a Daddy's boy. As soon as Elwyn leaves the room he starts crying. It's really kind of funny - this huge dog crying for his dad. We have left the dogs for 4-5 hours and there have not been any accidents and no chewing on anything when we are gone. I have a feeling they all lay around and wait for us to come home. When we are here Buddy will steal things to chew on like shoes or caps so we have to make sure those are put away. He still is fascinated with the romote control and did get ahold of it one day when we weren't watching. I was amazed you can buy replacement remotes for $5.00! Pet Nannies came one day and they said the dogs were all great. All of his vet work is completed so he is ready to go to his forever home. He will need someplace where he can get adequate exercise and diet dog food. At first he would not eat his diet food at all but now he is eating some.
