Buddy 10-313

Profile

It was Halloween night......It was dark and scary. The door bell rang. Our daughter answered the door. She yelled up to us, "Do ghosts have eyes?" Memories of Casper the Friendly Ghost ran through my mind. I think so, we answered. "Do ghosts have noses?" Again, we told her we thought so. "Do ghosts have ears?" Not sure about that one, but maybe. Do ghosts have 4 legs and a tail?" I really don't think so, Honey.

"Then what is this at the door?"

Let him in, I think it is our new foster dog- Buddy.

We removed the sheet and there he was! As small and curly haired as a 5-month old golden could be! All the way from Fargo, ND. What a GReat team of RAGOM volunteers who got him all the way to Cedar Rapids. Thank you for all you do for these GReat dogs!!

We will spend the next week getting to know Buddy better and send an update. He has a vet visit scheduled and lots of dogs and cats to meet in the meantime. Until then, hope you had a Happy Halloween with a lot of treats.

We've been enjoying the last of the nice fall days. Dogs seem to sense it's getting closer to their kind of weather, or maybe it's because Santa is coming soon with all kinds of dog treats for them!

Buddy is doing well. He seems much more comfortable with everything after 3 weeks here. It is often easy to forget how scared or insecure little ones (5-month olds) can be when placed into brand new surroundings. He is an energetic wrestling partner with our dog Gunnar, but even they have to "take a break" every once in awhile. See the pic below.

Buddy is still an earlier riser than we are, but it is more to let us know he has to go outside instead of wanting to be fed. The four cats make sure we know when they are hungry, so Buddy doesn't have to worry about that.
We continue to work on his food guarding. It can be a lengthy process. Buddy has done well so far, but it is difficult to predict how long it will be before he is ready to go to an adopting family.

During his first week here, we did confirm that Buddy has food and resource guarding issues which his previous owner advised RAGOM about, so no surprises there. Buddy will let you know when things have been left laying on the floor or should have been placed higher, or shall we say at counter-surfing height? It is a learning process for all of us. We are working on correcting these behaviors, but it does not happen overnight. Keep checking the updates to see how everything progresses along these fronts.

Until there is a correction of those behaviors, Buddy would not be suited for a family with young children or inexperienced dog owners. He is a very cute and lovable dog, but one who will need some time to work through these "issues".

On the VERY positive side of things, Buddy is absolutely flawless on the Gentle Leader, making him a joy to walk with our own two goldens, and sometimes even a couple of little dogs added to that for good measure. When they all come along on a walk, we abandon the sidewalk and claim half the street as ours!

Buddy loves to play, and respects and plays accordingly based on the size of his competition!! He has endless energy when he engages our 2-1/2 year old golden (who weighs twice as much as he does) and endless tolerance when playing with a little terrier (who weighs 1/4 of what Buddy does). Always fun to watch them at playtime together.

Buddy has free roam of the house 24/7. His alarm clock is set a little earlier than ours, however, so we never have to worry about over-sleeping and being late for work!

Look for another update in a week or so.
