Buddy 13-132

Please welcome Buddy 13-132 to RAGOM. Buddy is a 2 year old, neutered, Golden Retriever mix. We aren’t sure what he is mixed with, but we think he might be part snuggle bug. This sweet boy likes to cuddle more than any dog we have ever met. The paper work that came with Buddy from a shelter in Iowa says he was initially a stray. He was adopted by a family about a year ago from the same shelter and lived with that family until 3-4 weeks ago when they moved to Germany and couldn’t take him with. He is now up to date with his shots and in good health. Buddy is a lean 50 lbs, but he is really tall. He has black fur mixed with golden in his ruff and his tail – which is curly. He really is a cute fellow.

Buddy is crate trained and completely housebroken. When we let him out to do his business he doesn’t have to sniff everything in the yard first – he goes and does what he needs to do and then comes to find us to see if we can snuggle some more. We have been giving him free roam with our resident golden girl, Sammy, and everything is fine when we come home. Buddy is the most excited dog ever when you come home. I don’t care if you just walked down to the mailbox or came home after being gone a full day at work, Buddy dances and whines and wants to be with you and to be loved so badly. He is not shy about wedging his way in for pets either. He has been sleeping on our bed wedged between my husband and I for maximum snuggles. We wake up to dog kisses on our faces and necks and Buddy sandwiched in tightly – not moving at all during the night, except to try and get closer. What a sweetie.

Since he is so tall and athletic he has no problem jumping baby gates, but he only does it to be with his people. He has become my complete baby duck, following me from room to room. We keep the upstairs baby gated off for the cats (and he is great with cats – totally ignoring them) and when I went upstairs to get something he jumped over the gate to follow me, but otherwise hasn’t so much as sniffed at it if we are on the same side as he is. Buddy is also nuts for tennis balls. He hasn’t learned that if he drops it we will throw it again, but he will chase them like crazy if you have two of them to play with. Sammy hasn’t been too happy about that as she thinks all tennis balls should be hers – and will pick up both of the ones he is playing with in her mouth and play keep away with Buddy.

Buddy is a great car rider and is super happy to be going anywhere with his people. With the warm weather finally here we have been swimming in my parent’s in-ground pool. The other dogs love this, but Buddy isn’t too sure about the water. He followed me and Sammy down the stairs of the pool into the water, got his front feet wet and ran away. I don’t know if he has ever been swimming before. We are going to try him with a lake soon.

Clearly this guy has already won us over completely. He will make someone a great companion. As soon as you sit down Buddy is right there leaning in for loving. And while he is very content to lie around for hours in the evening while we read or watch a movie he loves to be active and will run like crazy if given the chance. He walks well on lease using a flat collar (after 1-2 minutes when the initial excitement of getting to go somewhere has faded slightly). He is a good player and respects other dog’s talk. Buddy gets along well with my parent’s hyper 1 year old golden (Lucy). Sammy is not big with playing anything except tug-a-war, so we borrow Lucy sometimes for play dates. Buddy and Lucy run all over the place playing, taking turns chasing each other and then wrestling. Buddy can out run Lucy any day and is seriously speedy.

If you have time to give a dog lots and lots of hugs and snuggles and have a place for his to run and get rid of his yahoos, then Buddy might be the sweet boy for you. Contact your placement adviser if you want to meet this total cuddle bug.

It’s hard to believe that we have only had this sweet boy for two weeks. He has fit into our house and our routine almost seamlessly. Although he is still my baby duck, he will wonder further away from me now that he is a little more settled. Instead of finding him lying against the bathroom door when I am done with a shower, he will go lie down in the bedroom and run when he hears the door opening. He loves everyone, but has definitely picked his favorite.

Buddy is a great little watch dog. If our neighbors are in their front yard or the UPS guy drops something off Buddy barks and runs to find us. It is a nice change from a dog that, when she sees someone walking up the driveway, runs to the couch and curls up to wait. The best part is that he will stop barking if you tell him that is enough. Buddy has also been protecting our backyard from squirrels and birds. He will sprint out the back door and streak after them with a few barks – he is so fast, but he stops at the fence. We only have a four foot fence, and after seeing him jump (over baby gates or after tennis ball) I know he could get out if he wanted to, but he stops and stares to make sure the critter isn’t coming back and then runs back to us, tail wagging and head held high, as if to say “did you see me get rid of that pesky thing for you? Aren’t you proud?” and you cannot help but smile at him.

We have found what might be the only negative about Buddy. He gets a little frenzied over tennis balls. Buddy will take a ball from you so gently it is truly amazing, but once you start throwing them he gets so excited that if you go to pick one up, and he sees you going for it, he leaps at it trying to get it first. We are working with him on this, but my hands have a few scrapes on them from not being sneaky or quick enough. We have been playing with two balls (sometimes 3-4 if Sammy is playing keep away with us). Buddy runs and gets the ball, and when he is close to us running back we will get ready to throw a second ball. He drops the first one and it generally rolls right to us. This works pretty well until he gets tired, then he won’t drop the ball he has. Give him 5 minutes though, and he is ready to go again.

Buddy takes treat gentler than any dog I know. When he first came into our house Sammy was on antibiotics and we were giving her pills twice a day, normally in a little cheese. I gave Buddy a small piece so he wasn’t left out and he took it with just his front teeth, so slowly, and put it on the ground to sniff it before he ate it. While he doesn’t put the treats on the floor to sniff them anymore, he is still super gentle about taking anything from us. Buddy is a very dainty eater as well and he chews his food thoroughly. He has no food guarding issues and we have to watch him to make sure that Sammy doesn’t butt him out of the way and finish his dinner off. If we tell Sammy to back off, Buddy will come running to us to make sure that he wasn’t the one doing something wrong. And sometimes in the middle of his dinner Buddy will run over to one of us for a quick pet before going back to finish just for the heck of it. He seriously loves attention.

Buddy doesn’t really ask to go outside, he normally just goes out with Sammy when she is ready and barks, but he can hold it a long time. If he does have to go out he will pant at you and wag his tail, and will keep looking at you until you let him out. It is something you have to watch for. Due to some weather related bad traffic in the morning and evening the dogs were home alone for an unexpected 9 hours. We came home to no accidents – just two dogs really ready to outside.

Buddy has been getting regular play dates with Lucy. He is a great player and loves to play chase and wrestle – they really tire each other out. He has tried to play with Benny, a Shih Tzu, and has backed off immediately when Benny told him no. Buddy is great at respecting dog language and will back down if he is getting to hyper for Sammy or Benny. This past weekend he was running with Lucy and was speeding towards where I was sitting on the patio and he skidded into a lawn chair and 5-gallon bucket. They made a big noise, but Buddy wasn’t scared at all - but he did cut his foot pad a little. Buddy was great about letting us clean it and look to make sure that it didn’t need medical attention. As soon as we were done looking, he ran off to go chase Lucy some more. He also shows no reaction to thunderstorms or fireworks – I don’t know if he is afraid of anything except not getting snuggles.
