Buddy (Bud) Lewis 06-177

Profile

09/01/06: Buddy Lewis has come back into the care of RAGOM. The family that adopted him a few months back discovered that although he absolutely adores little kids, he can be a bit rough with them and doesn't seem to understand the rules of "playing" with humans. He also seems to suffer from a bit of what we call resource guarding, which means that he "protects" things that he believes are his. The family felt that because of these things, Buddy would do better in a home without young children so they returned him to RAGOM. Buddy was then boarded for a couple weeks before we gave in and decided it just wasn't fair to him and brought him home with us. He has an evaluation scheduled at the University of Minnesota's animal behavior department next week and until then we are keeping an eye on him in the house to see if we can't catch some of the behaviors his previous family saw. So far, all we've seen is a dog that is very happy to be out of that kennel and into a home!!

When we first arrived home, my husband's reaction was "Buddy?? Who named him that?" So, he has been calling him "Louie" - after his middle name of Lewis. Buddy doesn't seem to mind what you call him! He met the resident golden, Beckham, and that must have been a pretty good conversation. In doggie language I imagine it was something like this:

Beck: Wanna play, wanna, huh?? Wanna, wanna?? Let's play, come on, play!! Yea, a friend! Play, play, play!

Buddy: Listen up young fellow! I am a mature canine and will have none of this nonsense! I haven't even had a chance to sniff my new yard yet!

Beck: Oh, okay. Sounds good - but, after you sniff can we play?? Huh, huh?? Let's PLAY!!!

In other words, they are now getting along great - it just took Buddy telling Beckham off for Beck to realize that Buddy needed some time to get comfortable. They now play and wrestle, and seem to enjoy each other very much! The three of us took a nice long walk and my husband was concerned. He said "Are you going to take them both??!" Well, I couldn't leave one behind and I certainly didn't want to take TWO 4-mile walks, so Yes, I did take them both!! Imagine my surprise when they walked like a perfectly matched pair! Beckham is trained to walk on the left so Buddy gladly took up the spot available on my right and off we went. The walk was very uneventful. We passed many a walker, biker, leashed dog and not even a peep out of Buddy. The only time he even pulled on the leash was when we were nearing home and he noticed two squirrels playing in the middle of the path.

I have some idea of what Buddy is looking for and that would be a fenced yard (this is negotiable as we don't have a fence and he's been okay so far) where he can chase squirrels and not have to be bothered by passing cars and trucks, maybe a doggy friend to wrestle with as he really seems to enjoy that, and probably no children under the age of 10. These things may change as we get to know Buddy more, but we will keep you updated! We will also try and get some updated pictures to add to his bio as soon as possible.

If you think that this mature, but very active, boy might be for you - Please email

Buddy Lewis has been ADOPTED!

I know, you are wondering, can I confuse you anymore with this saga?? Well, believe me, I too have been plenty confused!

I got a call from Mrs. W. yesterday, stating that they were 100% sure they WANTED Buddy. She said that after having time to think and talk it over, they just couldn't pass up on the bond and connection that they felt with him. My husband and I tossed the idea around. We had given up on him ever finding the right family with all the back and forths we've had, and decided that this was in fact the best situation we could ask for. So, we made a date to sign the papers and hand over our Baby Bud.

The W.'s are going to take REALLY good care of Buddy, through thick and thin. They are going to start obedience with him, watch his weight, love him, and give him all the attention he could ever ask for. Though we will miss his slobbery face each day when we get home, we know that he will be happy in his new, very own, forever home.

So, Buddy WILL NOT be in attendance at Sunday's PetCo event. Instead, he will be getting used to his new family, playing ball in his new yard, and dreaming of chasing all the squirrels from his new trees!!

Good luck, Bud. We will miss you a lot!

Love, your foster family

YIPPEE!! Buddy finally got some good news today!! I know we just did an update, but I just had to share!

Buddy's hips look GOOD! No surgery for this guy! In fact, our vet couldn't believe somebody would even suggest that he needed surgery! Although he may not have perfect, certifiable hips, she said that his hips and knees look good on X-ray and that his awkward gait may be from not enough muscle mass in his hind quarters. If you remember correctly, Buddy came from a farm originally where he was kept in a small outdoor run with little time for play and building up muscle. So, we are going to be starting Buddy on some supplements to increase the health of his joints and elasticity of his tendons and continuing to help him lose some pounds with long walks and plenty of playtime! There are, of course, no guarantees (with any dog) of what the future might hold, but for now, he is perfect just the way he is!

Buddy's practicing his smile for this weekend's PetCo event! Come on out and meet the boy of your dreams!

Happy Bud

Buddy has had quite a week, both good and bad. We'll start with the good: He accompanied me on a home visit Sunday and boy did he enjoy himself! The family just adored him and he was so well-behaved! He did find a few items that we had to take from him (an old stuffed toy and a stuffed bear), but he didn't put up a fuss when we extracted these things from his "death grip". We obviously need to continue to work on his "drop" command! He did get in their cat's face a bit, but backed down when the cat gave an appropriate warning of a growl followed by using Bud's face as a punching bag - good thing he didn't still have his claws! Needless to say, Buddy respected his space for the rest of the visit - Good Boy! He also came and found me when he wanted to go out to go potty, proving that he is in fact potty trained!! Overall, it was a great visit.

The bad news is that we got Bud's evaluation notes in the mail from the U of M. Boy, they're just terrible. If I had read these notes, I never would have thought they were talking about our Big Lew. He has, in the last month with us, never shown an ounce of aggression towards anything, but at the time of his evaluation we didn't know much about him. Unfortunately, with the bad habits he had demonstrated at his previous home, his evaluation does not read well. The good thing we can take from this evaluation is that we are obviously doing something right as he has not had any reason to be this naughty dog while here with us. With the direction, exercise, and training he is getting here, he has turned a new leaf. I think this is the dog he was always meant to be, he just needed some help along the way. I have no doubt that he will make somebody a wonderful friend and companion - I just need to find that family able to look beyond his past and into his future. Are you that family? It may be a risk, but if you can provide the time and attention he needs, I promise he will return it all ten-fold!

We'll be waiting for you call - just email Placement if you are interested in meeting this big "Budder-ball"!! In the mean time, you can enjoy some new pictures of Buddy enjoying playtime with resident Golden, Beckham. My favorite is the one where Bud is obviously ready for a nap - would you look at those sleepy eyes!! So cute!

Buddy arrived at his regular foster home on Friday night. He rode well in the back seat, standing up and looking out the windows the whole time, even though it was dark. I don't think he's been in the car very often, so every trip is new, and he loves to see new things.

He met the cats without a problem, at least from his side. My youngest doesn't like dogs, and hisses at them, from on top of the furniture. Everyone is settled down now. Buddy was nervous for the first two days, pacing around inside, not wanting to lay down. Today, he's relaxed and has decided he really likes laying down next to my bed, after he's taken all his toys into the bedroom with him, just to keep them safe.

He loves the stuffed woobies. My stash has been depleted over the last year, I keep sending them with my foster dogs to their forever homes. Buddy and I went to Petco yesterday morning, to let him pick out a few for himself. It was so cute to watch him sniff them all, then grab one and start walking down the aisle again. He did so well. He loved being petted by people, especially kids. He met my next door neighbor's grandchildren, and couldn't get enough petting from them. He hasn't jumped up at all, and he's learned that he gets petted when he comes up and sits next to you.

He hasn't had any accidents, and goes potty everytime we go outside. He has to go out on a cable, and he's adjusted to that really well. He knows "come", "sit" and "no". I think he's one of the smartest dogs I've ever been around. I have separate water for the cats, that I try (not always successfully) to keep the dogs out of. The first night, Buddy went towards it, and I said, "No" and showed him his water. He has never tried to drink the cat water again, even when he drained his own bowl. He started to lift his leg once, and I said no, he hasn't done that again either. I'm really impressed at how easily he adapts.

I've been crating him overnight, and when I'm gone. He goes into the crate easily, when I throw a treat in first. He paws a little bit, but settles down within a few minutes. I'm going to let him sleep in the bedroom tonight, instead of the crate, and see how he does.

He pulls a little bit on a leash, so we're going to start working with the Gentle Leader. He's competely up to date with all his vet work, so he's ready to go to his forever home. He'd love to have a fenced yard to run around in, and another dog to play with would be great. He'd love to have his own kids, but someone to give him all the attention he missed out on for the first part of his life is what he really needs.

If you think Buddy would be a perfect addition to your family, please e-mail placement at placementatragom [dot] org to let them know that you're interested.

Howdy....it's me, Bud, again. Well, it seems like I caught the eye of a couple of good folks out there. I sure am hoping that some of them are good looking women, by darn I sure like the good looking ladies! Ah hem...sorry, I let my mind go a wanderin' off there for a spell. Anyhoo, thought I'd fill y'all in on some of the things that make me so gosh darn appealing. I guess some might call me a big guy. I ain't no ball o' fluff, that's all me ya see in them there pictures. I haven't had the pleasure of steppin' up on one of them new fangled contraptions some call a scale, but I'd guess myself to be about 80 lbs of pure horse flesh, (wink)! I surely do like my woobies too. Some of you out there on the ranch might be a callin' them stuffed toys, whatever, makes no never mind to me what they're called, all I know is that I like 'em in my mouth. (I had to have something to keep me happy after I gave up my chewin' tabaccy). I only had one little ol' "accident" while I been in this nice lady's house. I lifted my big ol' hamhock of a leg and let it fly right into her herd of cat's litter box. Now, she was a little cranky with me, but I just cannot for the life of me understand why. I put it right were I was aiming, AND her fool cats go there anyway, so what's the big deal I ask?! If you kinda keep remindin' me gentle like, I do ok on a rope and harness (or some might call the dern thing a collar and leash). I know how to sit real good too! I might do just a little jumpin' up, but, I swear, I'm just tryin' to steal a kiss! I don't need to howl with the coyotes any more either, it's even kinda nice to be able to hear myself think once in a while! I don't even mind goin' into one of those square metal boxes that lady calls a crate. I just use my time in there to think about how gosh darn wonderful life is now. I sure did something right somewhere to be livin' the life of Riley now! Well, I'll be hittin' the trail tonight on my way to the big town and bright lights of Moline. Ya'll can catch up with me on the flip side if you're a wantin' to meet this big ol' hunk o' loving in person. Just let them good folks at RAGOM know and they'll do their darndest to hook us up. Happy trails to you until we meet again.........Bud
