10/28/06: Buddy M came to stay with us a few days ago. He is a RAGOM dog from 2002 and he was surrendered back to RAGOM due to the owner's health issues. Buddy is 5 years old and has had excellent care in his adoptive home. He is very well trained, has excellent manners and no health issues. He has been the perfect house guest.

Buddy is a tall dog, weighs about 74 pounds and is believed to be a Golden/Collie mix. Buddy has been through Beginning Obedience training and knows several commands along with some hand signals. He loves to go on walks and ride in the car. He is used to a couple of walks a day and was brushed every day.

Buddy was around cats in his previous RAGOM foster home back in 2002, but was not around cats in his adoptive home. We do have 2 cats and he has been wanting to chase them, but that is getting better each day. He doesn't try to hurt them, but has great curiosity in watching them and trying to play.

Buddy has had a bad experience with a man in the past, and initially wasn't sure about my husband, but he warmed up pretty quickly. He likes to talk by making little whining and moaning sounds which is really cute when we talk to him and he talks back. Buddy stayed home on Friday with the resident dog for a full work day and everyone behaved very well while we were gone. He loves kids and other dogs. He does get startled at times with loud noises. His owner said he is afraid of vacuum cleaner hoses, so we will see how he does when we clean this weekend.

Overall, you couldn't ask for a better dog than Buddy. He comes well trained and loves his people. If you are looking for a ready made companion, even if he doesn't look like a Golden Retriever, we have the one for you.

From Buddy's forever family...

We get such a kick out of reading all of the updates, that we finally had to send in one of our own.

We adopted Buddy in February 2007 when he was almost 6 years old. Buddy had been adopted from RAGOM as a puppy to another family, and that family returned him to RAGOM when the owner could no longer care for him due to her own health issues. We would like to sincerely thank her for making that difficult decision that ultimately brought him into our lives. It was clear from the helpful notes and medical records provided by the owner that Buddy was loved and well cared for by his first family.

We have been enjoying our excellent adventure getting to know Buddy's personality and quirks. He does not know how to retrieve and does not seem interested in learning. He will play with his toys by throwing them up in the air to himself. For the first month at our house, he refused to walk on the tile or hardware floors. We invested a small fortune in throw-rugs so that he could make it from one end of the house to the other without freezing up and dropping to the floor like a dead weight. Gradually, we removed one rug at a time until there were none. After the last rug was taken away, Buddy stood in our carpeted dining room and howled for about 15 minutes before he finally realized he preferred to be with us rather than by himself in the dining room. We have had no issues with the floors since then!

Buddy has seamlessly fit into our lives with very little drama. He demands very little other than two walks a day, a sunny spot on the floor to fall asleep in, and to be by our side whether indoors or out. He does bark (loudly!) at people who come to the door and can be over protective at times. But, we continue to work on this with small improvements over time. He can be suspicious of male strangers but loves it when the neighborhood kids hug and pet him. He also likes to try to herd people if he thinks they are getting away from him. We are still learning about him, and we have had him for over 2 years!

We would like to thank Buddy's foster mom, Denise, for taking great care of him. And, we would like to thank RAGOM and all of the foster families for the great work that you do.

P.S. We had a dog DNA test done on Buddy. The results came back that he is mostly Miniature Schnauzer, with a little Italian Greyhound and German Shepherd thrown in. My husband thinks the test was a waste of money, but I think it is hilarious! We are happy RAGOM was not too rigid on the "Golden" part of your name.

Buddy has been adopted by Rob and Wendy H. We are so excited that Mr. Bud has found his forever home. Thank you, Rob and Wendy, for bringing Buddy into your hearts and home. He is a fantastic boy and will give you so much love in the years to come. It is families like you that keep us "giving' up our dogs and bringing the next one in.

It has been so quiet here since Buddy left. We had him for a little over 3 months. That's the longest we have had a foster dog stay with us. But we are in this to help dogs in need find homes and even though we miss Buddy a lot, it is such a great feeling to know that he has a home to call his own and family that will love him and take such good care of him. Buddy, you are such a special boy, and even though the cats have enjoyed wandering the house without being on the lookout for the big dog, it has been great having you here. We wish you all the best in your new home. Remember to "tell" Rob and Wendy how happy you are to see them when they come home from work each night.
