Buster was transported to his foster home on Sunday, October 21st.  The transport went smoothly. His foster house includes two Dachshunds, a cat and a bird.  He has been introduced to all members of his foster family and the introductions went well.  The two Dachshunds are apprehensive and cautious and move from their crate to Buster's pillow bed to check out the new smells.  Buster doesn’t pay them much attention but occasionally wanders over to check them out.

Buster looked the cat over from a distance the first time he entered the house but he never showed any indication of wanting to chase or harass the cat.  Based on the lack of aggression or interest in the cat or the dogs, Buster was only on a leash for the first few minutes of introduction to his foster family.  The cat has approached to within 4 feet of Buster with all his hair standing straight out making the cat look as big as he possibly can get.  There has been no hissing or growling by the cat. The cat's willingness to approach Buster to within 4 feet and the cat's silence is definitely due to Busters lack of interest in the cat.

Based on the behavior I’m seeing today, I expect it will only be a few days before the dogs are sharing the pillow bed and the cat has been close enough to Buster to touch him.

After arriving at his foster home, Buster was fed for the first time today.  Food was withheld this morning so he would travel better.  He gets sick when he travels with food in his stomach.  After a good meal he headed to the back yard for a game of fetch.  We took several photos of him playing a favorite game.

Buster has a great attitude and he has been excellent with our kids, age 11 and 13.  We have moved him to a Nutro - Lamb & Rice diet without any hesitation by Buster.  Tomorrow we will schedule his first RAGOM vet visit and get him UTD on all vaccinations and begin to address the medical treatment he needs for his hips, shoulders and allergies.

After a valiant, yearlong battle with Fibrosarcoma, Buster crossed the Rainbow Bridge at the U of M on Friday July 1st with his Mom, Dad, Sister, fur sister Lucy and fur brother Max (#06-435) at his side.

We lovingly called him “Pester” because of his Velcro nature. He was a sweet, good-natured dog who loved cuddling, chasing his Frisbee, playing basketball, walks with his Dad and fur brother and sister, swimming at the lake and in particular, wrestling and chasing with his big fur brother Max. During my own battle with cancer over the last six months he was my faithful companion, always snuggling up to me when I was feeling sick or blue. It was with very heavy hearts (and many tears) that we said “Goodbye” to our sweet boy.

Below are pictures of Buster with his fur brother Max and fur sister Lucy, Buster with his always present Frisbee and Buster posing for his “GQ” picture.

A picture and update from Buster's new family :-) Buster's on the left with dad, Max in the middle and Lucy on the floor.

"Our first day went great. Max and Buster follow each other around the house :) and Buster has decided that Amanda's bed is the best place to take a nap. Since he is the only dog that can jump high enough to get on her bed, that might be his special place! Max and Buster slept on our bed and on the floor last night. . . when one would get up and move the other one followed! Lucy slept on her bed in the kitchen . . . but she was on the bed earlier in the night with both of them while we watched TV. This morning after they had breakfast Buster and Max lounged on the bed laying on top of each other.

I think Buster has already learned the word "Kitchen" - we had them all outside twice (Buster on a long leash) and used "Kitchen" to call Max and Lucy. The second time, Buster beat them both to the front step! We'll download our pictures tonight and send one to you.

Thanks! T.

PS- they did fabulous being left alone for the 3 hours we were at our banquet - no "collateral damage" as Duncan says when we got back!"

This past week I received the mailing address for the RAGOM Ortho Surgeon who will be reviewing busters Xrays.  Monday I will have Buster's local vet mail the Xrays.

Buster is doing very good.  He hot spot on his left front foreleg is almost completely healed over and hair is growing back.  We provided no treatment and we did not use the cone around his head except for the first coupled days he has been with us.  Buster is not showing any signs of allergies or skin irritation.  At his initial vet screening the vet did notice some evidence of skin irritation however any such evidence has completely cleared with no signs of additional irritation.

All in all, we are having a great time.  I have included a couple photos of Buster at running after his ball.  These photos give you some idea the pleasure he gets from chasing the ball.  Around the houce the ball is ever present by his side or in his mouth.  As I sit here typing he is tossing the ball onto the key board or dropping it in my lap.

My wife and kids could not imagine a better tempered dog.  I will likely hold off on posting any new photos for a while.  I think the photos posted give you an excellent idea of who Buster is.  He is still young, turning 18 months on the 30th of this month.  There is a lot of play left in Buster.

Buster is doing great. We continue to take our daily walks, play fetch and enjoy life.

Buster's relationship with our two Dachshunds is in the playful but guarded stage and his relation with our cat is about the same. The cat will initiate some play as long as there is a quick get-away option. Buster and the cat sleep at the foot of our bed within a couple feet of each other.

Busters Xrays from his previous vet have been received and reviewed by my local RAGOM vet and the vet agreed that there was a potential for moderate case of hip dysplasia. Busters Xrays are being sent to the RAGOM Ortho surgeon in Minnesota for review and recommendation.

In the mean time we continue to work on building muscle tone through diet and exercise. Buster has not shown any signs of pain or discomfort during our walking, biking or games of fetch.

I have included a couple new photos.
