Callie 06-287

Profile

7/6/06: Callie arrived at her foster home on Sunday. She is a very shy 5 year old girl and startles at many things. She met my ten resident dogs with no problem and has found her favorite spot to lay in the living room. She is a Velcro girl and has to keep us in her sight all of the time. I took her to the vet on Monday and she weighs 60 pounds. Fortunately, her heartworm test was negative and she is now UTD on her shots. Callie goes in this morning for her spay. I will send another update in a few days after we get to know her a little better.

We adopted Callie on 10-15-06, and knew we had our work cut out for us when we brought her home. She was frightened of most everything, except our resident dogs. She had been in foster care for a while, and had learned to trust the people she knew. Sue and Bill did a great job showing her that life is good, once she settles into her new family, and we thank them for giving her the confidence to learn to trust.

The day we brought her home, she was afraid to get out of the car, she was afraid to go into and out of our home. She had been down a very long, hard road, and was more than likely a victim of abuse, and severe neglect before she became a RAGOM girl.

Today she is a happy, self confident, thriving member of our family. She loves to go on our daily walks, in the car, to the dog park, any place we can take her. She truly loves her life, and we love her. She does have storm anxieties, but now she looks to be near us, instead of crawling under a bed or finding comfort behind the sofa, I don't have many pictures of her, as she is afraid of the camera, but I did manage to sneak a few of her this summer. We are lucky to have this sweet girl in our  lives.

There is excitement in the air at our house! Callie is meeting with a prospective adoptive family this Sunday! We are so happy for Callie to have this opportunity. She deserves the wonderful Golden life that will be hers with her forever family. Right now she is outside playing chase and wrestling with her Golden buddies. She is a joy to watch! You go Girl!

Callie continues to surprise us. She will still be that timid girl, but then she will bark and wag her tail and jump at us to get us to give her something that she wants. Most of the time what she wants is for us to share food with her. This girl is highly food motivated!!! Yesterday she did something that was completely unexpected. She was running across our front yard and barking with one of our resident dogs! I have never seen her play with any dog but our Goldie puppy. It is so wonderful to see her becoming the girl that we know she can be. I'm sending some new pictures so that you can see how far she has come since we began fostering her. Callie is so special. Please email placement if you would like to meet this special girl.

Callie is gradually coming out of her shell. In the morning she will become impatient with me because I need to use the bathroom and put on my robe and slippers before I feed the dogs. She will stand in the doorway and bark at me while wagging her tail and grinning at me. She is extremely food motivated! I think it is her favorite time of the day. She now plays with our little Goldie more openly. At first she would stop playing the instant she saw someone watching her that wasn't four legged. Callie still only plays with Goldie in our bedroom though. Maybe she thinks the other dogs will try to play with them and she's not ready for that yet.

She still has one behavior issue that we are trying to deal with. We had some severe thunderstorms lately and now she puts on all the stops when we want to take her out to potty after dark. She noticed some heat lightening and ran back to the door. Now we have to put a leash on her and lead her out after dark and sometimes she doesn't cooperate with that. It would not be a big deal but now she is using our living room as her potty during the night. I'm going to try giving her some "Rescue Remedy" about a half hour before bed and see if that helps her have courage to go outside.

Callie reminds me of Lady Britt and how afraid she was of everything at first. I'm hopeful that Callie will overcome her fears with patience and love. We will continue to take one step at a time and be thankful for little victories.
