Introducing.... Captain "Jack"!

Jack came in to the local animal shelter as a stray so nothing is known about his background. He is about 60# with a beautiful red colored coat and sweet senior white face. One of the shelter workers called RAGOM because, as rough as he looked on the outside, his golden personality came shining through. He was dirty, with dred locks on his hind end, this black growth on one eye, and half a tail. My girls decided that since he reminded them of Captain Jack Sparrow that we would call him "Jack" (rough on the outside and soft on the inside).

I picked up Jack at the shelter and took him straight to the vet. He was a perfect gentleman in the car, just sitting and looking out the window. Once in the office, he let the vet poke, prod, and check him from head to toe without any problems. The vet thinks he is about 10 years old. Jack has a pea sized growth on his left lower lid and a half dollar sized growth on his left side that the vet recommended be taken off and sent to a lab to be analyzed for melanoma. He will go back on June 11th for a booster shot and hopefully have these areas removed and biopsied then.

Once home, my daughter brought our dogs to meet Jack at the park next to our house. All went well with the initial meet and greet so we all ventured home. Out in our backyard, he let me brush him, shave his dred locks, and clip his nails. He loved the brushing but was not crazy about the shaving or the nail clipping but he let me do it a little at a time. Tomorrow we'll try a full scaled bath!

Stay tuned for the next update on the adventures of Captain "Jack".

Life With Jack aka Captain Jack

I was lucky enough to adopt Jack in May, 2009. He came to join me and his two Golden brothers, Duffy 13 ½ years and Willy 10 ½ years.

All of my boys are wonderful, better than ever, the best boys in the world, rescue dogs. They are the most loving and devoted creatures anyone could ever wish for.

Jack is an absolute joy to live with. He is a funny, very very sensitive boy and my constant companion. Wherever I go, Jack is right there next to me. When he hears my computer come on he races into the bedroom to sit beside me.

Willy has taught Jack how to play with toys, and chase bunnies and squirrels. The two are inseparable. They eat, sleep and play together.

Duffy is the senior supervisor of the group. They seem to know that he has cancer and doesn’t feel well a lot anymore. Willy and Jack take care of Duffy, inside and outside. They don’t want to come in until Duffy has come up to the deck. When Duff sprawls out across the floor, they gently walk around him and don’t disturb his well deserved sleep.

Jack loves to go the office with me on Fridays. He just adores seeing all the people, and getting all the extra treats. The mailman brings each boy a special treat, which they do look forward to. He loves looking out the front window of my office, or playing with the toys there. He’s also my best guard dog if he hears a strange noise, but will quiet as soon as he’s told it’s okay.

For me, senior boys are the best.  I will always have "golden boys" in my life.

Jack is just hanging out here in Rochester enjoying his summer. He and his new buddy Riley 08-340 are still waiting for a family to call their own. I really struggle updating his page because nothing has changed. He's still the best dog ever! Jack is a velcro golden boy, housebroken, has free roam, he's not destructive, knows basic commands, and is great with kids, cats, and other dogs. If you would like to meet Jack, please contact placement.

Well, Mr. Jack arrived here to a not so excited bunch of dogs.  I have two resident dogs who have not had much experience with fosters.  After a rough start, Jack has made himself at home and made great buddies with the one who was the least excited to see him initially.  I am including a picture of them which is not that great, it's from a phone, but I had to get the picture while the opportunity was there!

Jack has reminded me what I love most about Goldens.  He is a gentleman, sweet, kind, and loving.  He likes to be around me all the time, and prefers to be next to me when he's eating as well.  If I leave the room, he leaves his food and follows me.  This may not be a problem if he could go back to his food throughout the evening, but in this house you have to eat when you get it or someone else will.  So, he's been eating at my feet while the others are gated out of the room.

He has the best tail, it's shorter than normal, so it can't get in to much trouble knocking things over or getting caught in doors.  And, it works just as well as a full tail!  He is always wagging it to show his happiness.  When he is getting to close to one of my dogs who doesn't like their personal space invaded, he backs off without a second thought and isn't offended at all by it.  He just finds something else to do.

Jack has enjoyed finding bones to chew on and, much to my surprise, he may have a grey face, but he likes to play with my 15 month old pup. (They are in the picture together)  I don't know if he thinks she's cute and is trying to hit on her or he has finally found someone who will play with him!  It's fun to watch them, he tries to be polite when he plays with her and she plays in her rough and tumble ways.

We have Jack with us for another 5 days.  It is so nice to have him, he was already fitting in the first hour he was here.   I am confident he will make a wonderful addition to anyone who wants the traditional Golden experience.  Before you ask to meet him though, make sure you are ready to bring him home because he will win your heart over as soon as you meet him!

First off... a BIG wet doggie smooch to Ellen Sanchez for sponsoring Captain Jack!

Jack continues to be the perfect gentleman at our house. I can't believe no one has snatched him up! This guy is a total love bug. Don't let those grey whiskers fool you. He's full of vim and vigor.

Jack had a great time at Parktacular last weekend. He met lots of people on the parade route, sweetly taking treats from young and old alike. The little kids loved the fact that he would sit and let them pet him as long as they wanted. After the parade he even had the opportunity to visit with a few potential families that stopped by the RAGOM booth. Here is a picture of Jack relaxing at home after Parktacular and one of him just hanging out with his buddy Tino.

I will be gone this week so Jack is going to stay with another foster here in Rochester. Her name is Jill. I'm sure Jack and Jill will have a great time together!

If you're interested in meeting Captain "Jack", please contact placement.

GREAT NEWS!!! Although the tumor removed from Jack's lower lid was indeed a Melanoma, the vet believes they got all of it so there is little chance that it will need to be touched up in the future. The tumor on his side was found to be a benign hemangioma. Jack will have his stitches removed on Wednesday, 6/11 and then he is ready for his new home.

So, if you are looking for a companion that is GREAT with kids, cats, and other dogs, Jack is your man. This gentleman is a dream! Talk about a perfect poster boy for his breed. My 5 yr old granddaughter was visiting this week and he was perfect with her. Jack does not jump up on people, rarely have we heard him bark, and he is completely reliable in the house. He has never had an accident in the house or shown any destuctive behavior. Jack knows his basic commands, takes treats ever so sweetly, and his little half tail rarely stops wagging. He absolutely LOVES to be with his people.

Please contact placement and consider making Jack the perfect addition to your family!

Master Jack has had a busy time here in Rochester. Last week he went for his first official grooming and shed his rough exterior. What a beautiful shade of red he is! This boy absolutely LOVES to be brushed. He gets really relaxed, eyes closed, and all dreamy looking. Jack is completely reliable in the house, no accidents and no destructive behavior so he has earned free roam when we're away.

Jack had surgery this week to remove the growth on his eyelid and the one on his side. Both tumors were sent off to the U of M for analysis. We should get the report back next week. Jack also had bloodwork and a chest xray before surgery and the good news is that those both looked great! Please keep him in your thoughts as we wait for the results of his pathology.
