Caya’s foster mom had to go out of town for the weekend and we had the pleasure of enjoying Caya for the weekend. She is a beautiful young female that is very easy to have in your home. She loves people, giving kisses and getting her tummy rubbed. She is reliably house trained, doesn’t chew on inappropriate items or countersurf and can be left with free run of the house when you aren’t home. She is crate trained and you will sometimes find her resting in her crate with the door open. She doesn’t really need a crate any longer, but enjoys it. She will join you on the couch if invited, but sleeps on the floor at night – could probably be convinced to join you in bed if you wanted her to, but she doesn’t just assume that’s ok and doesn’t jump up in your bed of her own accord. She quietly slept on the floor in the bedroom at night.
Caya met my four resident dogs with no problems. We met outside in the fenced in backyard. I have two senior Golden girls, a young male Golden/Aussie mix and a female Shiba Inu. One of my senior Golden girls, Allie, likes to let all new dogs know that this is her house, her stuff and her rules. We were all in the kitchen Friday evening and Caya made the mistake of walking past Allie. Allie let her know that she didn’t want to be disturbed, Caya argued back, I told them to knock it off. After that, Caya was very respectful to the point of being timid to walk past Allie. Allie has a bratty behavior of lying at the top of the stairs and no foster dogs dare walk past her. Caya would stand in the kitchen and look at me for help. I’d get her and move Allie over so Caya could walk by. My other senior Golden, Spirit, likes to lie on the couch and will let any dog walking by know that it’s her spot, not theirs. Caya walked past Spirit on the couch, Spirit lifted her lip, I thought uh-oh, Caya backed up and left Spirit alone. Very respectful. Caya and Scooter (Golden/Aussie mix) loved each other. They had a blast running and playing in the backyard. They would run and chase and run some more. It was so fun to watch. Caya does have a high prey drive and my 18 pound Shiba Inu looks like a white fox or a white squirrel when she runs out the door. Caya thought that it was great fun giving chase. She would also lower her ears and get into stalking stance when looking at the Shiba. I wasn’t comfortable with this behavior and would redirect. I do think that Caya would not be a good choice for a home with a small dog, cat or other small critters.
Caya and I went to the RAGOM event at Chuck & Don’s in Bloomington today. She loved meeting the people. She was giving kisses, getting belly rubs and had her picture taken by our wonderful RAGOM photographer. Thank you Devon! Other than her shorter ears, she is very Golden looking. We don’t know what she is mixed with, but she’s a very pretty, loving girl. She met a couple of dogs with normal sniffs. One dog was too active for her and made her nervous and that dog she snarled at. Some dogs she is fine with, some make her uncomfortable.
Caya’s ideal home would be one that either has no other dogs so she can get all the attention which she so loves, or a playful, younger dog that she could play with. I think she would be happiest getting all the attention as a single dog, but a playful dog friend would be ok. She cannot go to a home with cats, small dogs or other small animals. Because she can have difficulties with some dogs, we recommend that she have a fenced in yard for her safety and no young children. She would love the young children, but we wouldn’t want them in the middle if she met a dog that made her uncomfortable. There were a couple of families at the RAGOM event today that would have loved to have Caya join their family, but they had cats. She will benefit from obedience training to learn to walk on leash and pay attention to you instead of looking at her environment. If you are looking for a very loving furry friend and don’t have small animals, you’ll love meeting Caya.
