Welcome to RAGOM - Charlie 09-077!

Charlie arrived at my house this afternoon.  He spent the past two weeks at a shelter in Brainerd where he was surrendered.  We don't know too much about him, but he was very happy to be out of the shelter!  We think he is a Golden Retriever mix (maybe with cocker spaniel).  He's small - about 55 pounds - but very strong.  It was noted that he lived with other dogs, cats and kids.  He met with my Sophie (Cowgirl 08-401), and they were fine but he doesn't like to share attention with her.

We're learning things about Charlie but here's what I know so far:

  • He has a very sweet (and exuberant) disposition.  Right now he's settling in and getting to know our routine.  He loves all people and wants a lot of attention right now.  He likes to be with people.
  • He knows basic commands - sit, come, stay, down, and shake.
  • He is not crate trained but we're working on it.
  • He does not walk well on a leash but we're learning.
  • He jumps up because he's excited and happy but gets down on command.  We'll be working on that too.

After we visit the vet and he's is checked out and neutered, I will have some more recommendations as to what kind of "furever" home he will be looking for.  So please have patience and I'll update as soon as I know more. Stay tuned!

Charlie has gone to live with his forever family and is going well.  Here's some news from his new family:

Just to let you know Charlie's first 24 hours have gone very well.  We are doing our best to provide him with calm reassurance as he adjusts to his new surroundings.  He slept through the night in the laundry room on a big pillow (wasn't too crazy about staying in the crate but that door is always open if he decides to try it out.)  He already knows where the doors are and lets us know when he has to go out.  Follows my husband around and doesn't like it when he's out of his sight.  I walked him early this am, Ed walked him late morning, and Jacquie and I are going to walk him this afternoon.  THAT is the challenge....We watched the video that came with the gentle leader and Ed used it this am but he doesn't like it too much.  His panting has drastically decreased, and we think so has his anxiety.  We are very pleased and hope that soon he will realize that life is stable and predictable.  Thanks to you for your volunteer efforts in helping dogs like Charlie find forever homes.

Hi everyone - Charlie here.  FM says I need to start earning my keep by writing my own update.  I have these big GR feet (FM calls them teddy bear feet) so I don't know how my typing will be but I'll give it a shot.

I was at Petsmart today and what a place that is!  Kind of stressed me out a little bit so I didn't stay long but lots of nice people came to say hi.  I hope they liked me!  I tried really hard to be a good boy!

FM says I've been a VERY good boy at her house.  She's always saying "Good Boy".  I must be because I don't need to sleep in my kennel anymore at night.  I get to sleep in her room.  Sometimes I'm on the bed and sometimes I'm on the floor.  I kind of move back and forth during the night but I really like sleeping in there and being near my fur sister and my FM.  When the alarm goes off in the morning, I just roll over and wait for my belly rub.  FM says I must be getting more comfortable because I didn't used to ask for belly rubs,  but now I LOVE them.  I also like my human brother.  I walk really nice on the leash for him and I don't jump on him because he doesn't like it.  He's developmentally delayed and doesn't like it.  But I'm really good for him and he likes me to keep him company.  He took both Sophie and I for a walk together today and I didn't pull or anything - I was REALLY GOOD!  FM was very impressed.

I LOVE all this snow.  I like to go for my walks in the parking lot next door (FM says it's for the golf course).  They have HUGE snow mountains and I get to pretend I'm a mountain goat.  It's a lot of fun and I'm really good at running up there and jumping down.  Sometimes I even buzz Sophie.  She just rolls her eyes at me.

FM says to tell you that I'm now crate trained and go in with a treat.  Sometimes I whine a little but I NEVER bark.  I'm very excited to get out though.

Guess that's all for now.  FM says she'll take more pictures of me tomorrow being a mountain goat!
