Charlie (Chubby 08-308)

Profile

Hi, this is Chubby who we call Charlie. How horrible is the name Chubby? He is not even Chubby. He is perfect weight for his frame, 75 pounds! I guess he was the largest in his litter so that is how he got Chubby. His sibling is also in Ragom and his name is Skinny. Actually he is beautiful! Charlie has a golden, red coat and soft brown eyes. Those eyes melt my heart! He is 6 years old and as of yesterday is fully updated in shots and is neutered. He will need a booster of distemper in 3 - 4 weeks.

Charlie came to us on Saturday and was full of mats. The neighbors called them dreadlocks. His underbelly was caked with dried mud. After a soaking in the baby pool, he was given two baths and a long brushing. He seems to like water.

The vet also shaved his belly during neutering to get the remaining mats off. Look at the pictures, he is beautiful. The vet also did a light scraping of his teeth when he was out to get some tarter off.

Charlie was an outside dog and as I am told, never was in the house. He had no idea how to go or down the stairs. He is scared of my big dog Logan and will growl at him. Charlie has had very few experiences and our job is to teach him to be a dog! Yesterday a very knowledgeable person from RAGOM came down to Iowa for a transport and stopped by to see Charlie. Charlie is growling at our Golden and we want to make sure that he is safe to adopt out. Guess what? Charlie is so attached to us already that he is jealous of other dogs. He is so in love with my husband that he stands outside the shower door when Eric is showering! Right now he is laying by his feet while Eric is watching the CUBS. Usually our fosters get attached to me!! Is he a man's dog? I don't know but I have a good suspicion! :):):) Konnie from RAGOM showed us how to put this Dog who is acting bratty in his place. As of last night both dogs were sleeping in our room, playing catch together and laying in the same room with no problems or growling!!!!!!!! Hooray!

Charlie loves "babies"! I have attached a picture of Logan and Charlie's water dish. Who keeps putting their baby in the water dish for a swim? Well, I can tell you that it never happened until after Charlie arrived. He knows come, and down. He is working on sit and leave. He is a fairly nice leash walker, needs just a little work.

This is what I think about Charlie's needs:
1. a fenced in yard, though I think he is very smart and will learn to stay close
2. obedience classes, he has spent is life running on a farm and wasn't taught many manners
3. a home with no dogs so Charlie can be the center of attention
4. older children so he is not competiting for attention

We are incredibly sad to say that we had to say good-bye to Charlie on April 20, 2012. He was diagnosed with Mast Cell Disease and by the time it was diagnosed the disease had spread to his liver, spleen and bone marrow. God was smiling on him, and Charlie only showed symptoms the last week of his life. We went to the U of MN Vet Hospital on Wednesday morning and by Friday it was clear that Charlie was ready for us to lovingly say good bye.

It's impossible to explain the love we shared with Charlie. He was the light of our lives and will live in our hearts forever.

A long walk at the cabin

Hide and seek with my babies

Do I really have to come inside?

Nap time with my babies

How long do I have to stand here?

I'm pretty sure I just heard a grouse

Hunting chipmunks on the deck...
we called this his "Stalker Ted" mode

This is pig baby - no, I won't share.
I just want to show it to you.

Well, Charlie continues to make progress in his quest to be an inside dog. He does love the outdoors though. Some activities that we KNOW he loves is running, fetching and swimming. If you are a runner or walker this may be the dog for you. He is good on the leash now, a quick learner. We have been working on when he sees a dog, to ignore. Charlie loves our baby pool and will plop himself down in the water. We haven't tried a lake yet but my suspicions are that he would love it. Charlie is constantly carrying a "baby" or tennis ball around in his mouth. Actually he can carry two tennis balls in his mouth! He is very athletic, maybe he can get three! We have to stop the fetching games in the backyard after a while because he could stay out.

One must for an adoptive home is a toy box. Charlie loves our toy box. Last night I went to bed before Charlie and my husband. When I came down stairs this morning, Eric said, "Did you look in the family room?" All the tug toys, babies and balls were dumped from the box.

He still is not a good eater. He is definitely not food motivated. I wonder what he had as an outside dog to eat. Table scraps? It doesn't appear to be dog food!

We will continue to update you on this boy's progress. Please let ragom know if you would like to chat!
