10/9/2013:
Tubby/Tucker 13-100 is a 16 month old returning RAGOM dog who was adopted earlier this year to a nice older couple. The new owners surrendered him back to RAGOM because they found it difficult to manage his energy level. Tucker is a male 3/4 Golden Retriever and 1/4 Retriever/Spaniel mix. He is now being fostered in St Paul. He lives with two cats, a resident dog and three kids, age 11 and up and gets on with everybody.
Tucker is a beautiful young dog. He is fully kennel and house trained. He loves to play, wrestle, chase after balls, run around (with or without another dog) and retrieve things you might or might not want to have retrieved. He snuggles and wiggles, and in the evening when all is said and done he whines a little and wants to be put in his kennel. There he sleeps quietly all night and waits patiently until it is time to come out again in the morning.
Tucker has come a long way in one week. When he arrived he almost bounced out of his skin! Two people holding his leash could barely restrain him and he jumped on everybody and everything. Tucker, however, is smart, food motivated and LOVES attention. He clearly received previous training. He knows basic commands (solid on sit, wait, and working on down, come, watch me.) We put him on a gentle leader and since then the leash pulling has improved tremendously. He heels nicely for long periods of time until the distraction level gets too high (squirrel, rabbit, super interesting smell) but who could blame a young guy for that?
Tucker has had his vet visit and is now up to date on all shots. He weighs 65 lbs and is in top physical condition apart from an ear infection which is being treated and should clear up within two weeks.
Tucker, when exercised properly, is a really happy and nice dog to have around. He plays well with the resident dog, does not guard food or toys, shows not the slightest sign of aggression towards anybody, including the cats, and responds well to corrections as he is eager to please. He has free roam of the house except the upstairs bedrooms and has not destroyed anything, nor did he have accidents. If he needs to go outside he will whine and go to the door. He is also very affectionate and craves attention, especially ear rubs!
If you are interested in adopting Tucker please remember that
- he needs a LOT of exercise (daily visits to the dog park, or
- jogging/biking or long walks several times a day are absolutely essential at this point)
- he would like a fenced in yard to run around in (this cannot be a substitute to the exercise mentioned above unless there is another playful dog around to tire him out)
- he would do better with older children (8 and up) due to his strength and exuberant personality
- he is not guarding anything, an absolute sweetheart
- he is CAT APPROVED
- he still needs more training on recall, leash walking and no jumping/polite door greeting
- he would do best if NOT left alone for long periods of time at this point
Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested in Tucker.
Thank you!
