Chester 06-530

11/23/06: Happy Thanksgiving! I know a dog who is especially thankful today; it's Chester! Today was the last day a shelter in Iowa could hold him before, well, you know the rest...

Chester was picked up as a stray and was taken immediately to a local vet clinic for care and evaluation due to his condition. Chester weighed 41.7 pounds and was put on cephalexin (500mg) and vetropolycin for an eye infection. Chester is not yet neutered, but has been fully vaccinated and is Heartworm negative.

Despite his very poor physical condition, Chester still has the heart of a Golden! He was bathed and getting TLC from the staff at the shelter who reported his fabulous temperament and darling ways. He loves stuffed toys and seeks affection from everyone. The staff guessed his age at 8-10 years, but that is just an estimate, of course.

Chester arrived in the Twin Cities this afternoon, and many RAGOM volunteers have squeezed this transport into their Thanksgiving Day holiday schedule to get Chester into RAGOM's care before his time was up at the shelter.

Hey everyone; it's Chester! Foster mom took this photo of me today - I'm getting so big that I'm growing right out of my bed; hahahaha!!! No, really, I was just getting comfy and it made mommy laugh, so that's always good.

I was playing in the new snow today while she had the flashy camera thing, but I was moving around so much she said she didn't get a cute shot of my face. But, she wanted to send in my "body shot" to show how hefty I've gotten in the past 3.5 months as a RAGOM doggie (see below; before and after shots of my back-end). Isn't that amazing?!?

Well, I'm very busy tonight. The UPS guy brought a 21-pound box of Retriever Roll rawhides and Bully Sticks this afternoon (even during the snowstorm!), and this is my first experience with Bully Sticks, so I'm testing them all - right from the box!

Gotta go,

Chester

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrooooo! Chester here sending more cute photos of myself. I sure am glad I'm not a skinny stray dog in Iowa anymore; it's darned cold!!!

Mom was a little worried about me on Monday night when she got home from being gone all day, because I was limping quite a bit on my front foot. Then, a friend of hers said the same thing about her dog, so together they figured it was the cold weather and high barometric pressure. They must be pretty smart, because now I'm not limping anymore. It wasn't such a bad gig, though; mom served me breakfast in bed on Tuesday morning! :)

I have a big weekend coming up; I'm going to Mille Lacs on Saturday for an ice fishing tournament and then on Sunday there is a really big RAGOM people meeting and I've been requested to attend! Aaaarrrroooooooo! I LOVE being petted, and mom says she'll bring a bed for me to lay on when nobody's petting me, so my bones don't have to crash on the cement floor. RAGOM people are really nice; I'm going to be soooo fawned-over on Sunday - I can feel it in my bones!

Libby and Chester continue to have a secret love affair, while we continue to sneak pictures of the two of them :)

Chester continues to eat everything I fix for him, take his pills like a good boy, and allows me examine his belly to make sure everything is healing as it should. He's the perfect little patient that every nurse hopes for! We've noticed that his fur is really coming in nicely, where before he had sores and bare patches, and I can't wait for this week to pass so that I can give him a nice, warm bubble bath (two weeks post-neuter).

That's all for now; he's such an easy guy to have around... and he just keeps gettin' cuter...!

Happy New Year!!! Chester is recovering nicely from his neuter surgery last week, and I am happy to report that he weighed in at a whopping 66 pounds! What a difference from the 41.7 pounds when he was found as a stray in Iowa, and the 52 pounds at Thanksgiving time when I began fostering him. He is still quite thin and frail-looking, and may be a 75 pound dog when he's at a good weight for his frame.

When the vet's office shaved Chester's belly, they discovered that he has a skin infection that resembles chicken pox, so he's on an antibiotic for that for the next three weeks. They'll want to re-check him in two weeks for both his neuter and the skin infection, but he's already healing up nicely on both counts.

Also, they ran a mini blood profile and while his results are still not in the normal range, he has improved more quickly than the vet expected and his "numbers" are up by 10 points. He is still anemic, so I'm back in the kitchen cooking up his boiled ground turkey, ground beef, chopped garlic, and whole-grain rice food that I add to his regular dry kibble, along with Missing Link supplement. I'm determined to get this guy healthy after so much neglect!

Chester met lots of new people this past weekend who thought he was such a beautiful and friendly guy! He rides great in the vehicle, adjusts to changes in his routine just fine, and loves everyone he meets (especially men). Chester looooooves to be petted and leans right into the person who is petting him, and would love to sit in your lap for a hug as well.

Chester is not good with steps or stairs, so his Forever Home should have minimal steps to navigate. This could improve with time as he becomes healthier and more sure of himself, but he did wipe out trying to go down a steep staircase this past weekend and landed on his front shoulder. A minute later he was fine, but needed to be carried up and down any more than two steps all weekend. Chester also needs to continue to be leashed at all times while outside, as his "stray" instinct seems to take over and he gallops away without looking over his shoulder at me calling his name.

Chester and Libby continue to be good buddies, but neither of them really "play" with each other. Libby the Yellow Lab was pouting big-time on Tuesday when Chester was taken to the vet, and continued to pout until he returned. I felt so bad that I brought Libby to work with me and let her hang-out in my car all day! Libby acts like she couldn't care less for the RAGOM dogs that come and go at my household, but when faced with being "alone" she is quite the little Pill. Chester, on the other hand, seems to be fine being the "only dog".

Both dogs enjoyed their ice fishing expedition, and jumped off their bunk bed the first time a fish came out of the hole and HAD TO have a sniff. Chester would have preferred to hold that fish in his mouth, but we stopped him before he could grab it off the end of the line...silly boy. He very much enjoyed visiting everyone who was fishing outside, too, and is quite the social butterfly.

Now is the time to think about Chester's Forever Home; don't wait any longer if you are an approved applicant and would like to meet him. Chester is a great dog and would work well with any family situation who has some available hands for petting.

I finally have Chester home with me, after staying a day at Foster Tracy's house, who was wonderful and took him to a RAGOM vet for a once-over on the Friday after Thanksgiving (instead of shopping?!?).

Chester's bloodwork indicates many abnormalities, but is more than likely a result of being completely emaciated and will resolve once he gets to a more normal weight. The shelter in Iowa reported Chester at 41.7 pounds, but he has already gained several pounds since then. He does have an elevated white blood count, but has been on an antibiotic for his skin and sores for the last six days. Chester will need a high-protein diet as well, since his Iron and Hemoglobin are low as well.

It is obvious that Chester was not a house dog, but I think he'll catch on quickly. He has had many potty accidents at my house, which we will be working on steadily this weekend! He's met two of my cats and totally gave one of them a stinky, wet, nuzzly head-bath (to her disgust). Chester does not have the best breath, but he's already working on those rawhides to improve that issue - YAY!

Also, Chester is not neutered but is not healthy enough at the moment to endure surgery; he was even too skinny to have a microchip implanted! (SIGH)

Chester is a very nice, gentle dog who is getting the best second chance a dog could ever wish for. He shows spurts of spunkiness - trotting around with a tennis ball or rawhide in his mouth - before crashing down for a quick nap. Speaking of crashing...many of his skin sores are "pressure points" from laying on the ground with no meat on his bones to cushion him. When he lays down, it sounds like a bag of bones hitting the ground. It's very sad.
