Although Chevy had been well loved and cared for, his owner could no longer keep him so Chevy was surrendered to a shelter who then contacted RAGOM. Chevy is taking Trazadone to help control his panting and coughing, possibly caused by Laryngeal Paralysis, known to occur in older Golden Retrievers. Chevy gets along with other dogs and children; however, due to his size children in his home should be age 10 or older. His history with cats is unknown. He will need a fenced yard for his safety.

Chevy has found his forever home! He will be living out his Golden years with a mom who is home all day and a dad who works from home.

He will be doted on and spoiled in all the ways this very special senior dog deserves. Congrats to Chevy and his new family!

What a wonderful surprise! Thank you, Frankie, for your very generous gift of sponsoring Chevy! Chevy felt very honored and appreciative when I told him the exciting news! He sends you special X’s and O’s for thinking of him and for helping RAGOM with his care!

Chevy is enjoying his time going on walks, riding in the car to run errands, helping with all of the household chores and, of course, napping!

He has also decided to add playing with stuffed squeaker toys to his daily routine. He didn’t show much interest at first, but now he brings the toys to us for a toss or two before dinner!

Chevy continues to do well in foster care and is a happy, gentle and good natured boy! Since our last update, he has shown more of himself and we have formed a more specific vision of his ideal forever home and family.

Things Chevy needs in his Forever Home and Family:

  • A primary caretaker, along with a permanent support caretaker with patience and understanding of his needs due to Separation Anxiety and Laryngeal Paralysis.
  • A home with few stairs that he would have to use on a daily basis. He can do a few steps with carpet or a runner, but would slip and possibly fall using a bare wood stairway.
  • A quieter home with someone able to be with him the majority of time.
  • The companionship of another low activity dog would be a great benefit for him.

Things to know about Chevy:

  • Has Separation Anxiety and barks anxiously if he cannot see or be with his human(s).
  • Has Laryngeal Paralysis which causes panting and coughing upon activity and in the heat. After being evaluated by the vet and a surgeon, Chevy will not have surgery for this condition.
  • He continues to take Trazadone twice a day to relax the muscles around his larynx to help his breathing. This prescription is currently about $50.00 for a three month supply.
  • Has weakness in his back legs due to age and as a side effect of Laryngeal Paralysis.
  • Loves low energy outdoor activities like walking, laying in the yard sniffing, and sitting on the patio with us.
  • He will occasionally engage in play for a short time in the yard. He is always up for a car ride to do errands and of course a good nap in between all of the above activities is a must!

Chevy had pneumonia in September. The vet stated that it was probably aspirate pneumonia caused by the Laryngeal Paralysis. He was given antibiotics for a month, and a final chest x-ray in October showed all was clear and looked good!

Chevy has been busy having fun the past couple of weeks! He loves being outside and is happy to do whatever activity is going on. He went with me to breakfast at an outdoor patio and stayed quietly by my side. He loved the attention and compliments he received from the waitress!

When Chevy rides along in the car, he normally sits or lays quietly looking out the window. One gorgeous day last weekend, he actually scooched over to put his nose out the window and sniffed to his heart’s content.

Chevy travelled up north to the cabin and had a GReat time! He met his three Golden Retriever cousins and one tiny dog with no issues. He stepped onto the pontoon with no trouble and enjoyed trolling around the lake with the family.

After being at the cabin, Chevy went to Bubbly Paws and had a nice bath. He walked up the steps into the tub with no help and did a great job while I washed him. He was calm and so patient! He had his nails trimmed and was a perfect gentleman for that, too.

Chevy has a vet appointment scheduled for the 28th to follow up on his panting and coughing. He will have a consult and hopefully the test to determine if he has Laryngeal Paralysis. The vet stated that panting, coughing, and weakness in the back legs could be symptoms of Laryngeal Paralysis, known to occur in older Golden Retrievers.

Chevy was prescribed medicine, which he is currently taking twice a day, to relax the muscles attached to the larynx and help reduce panting and coughing. More information to come on this in future updates.

The life I would love to see for Chevy is with a family that will provide him with tons of love, patience, and understanding with his separation anxiety; someone home the majority of time as he is not happy and barks when left alone; and he would benefit having another dog to keep him company.

Chevy is a very loving and happy dog who will be a fabulous companion and a great addition to the right family!

Please welcome Chevy to RAGOM! Chevy is a 13-year-old Golden Retriever who was a house dog before his owner’s life took a turn for the worse and Chevy was left in the garage when his owner had to move. Thankfully, he was eventually surrendered to a shelter that contacted RAGOM to help him find his new home!

We have been getting to know Chevy for the past three weeks and have learned that he is a big, sweet love bug in true Golden style! It is evident he had been cared for and loved in his previous life.

Chevy is a friendly, happy, and handsome fellow.

Chevy came to us understandably anxious after the sudden changes in his life. He stayed very close, did not want me or my husband out of his sight, panted heavily, and coughed on and off. He still pants; however, I am happy to say it has improved some as he is much calmer now.

We have a resident Goldendoodle who is fourteen and she has been showing him her routine. Chevy is a confident boy, but he is following her lead and I believe having a resident dog has immensely helped him adjust.

Chevy’s general disposition is as good and sweet as can be! He enjoys short walks on cooler days and loves to sniff and sniff along the way. When he sees a squirrel, his ears perk and he picks up the pace but is not obsessed. It was fun to learn that he gets excited to chase after a tennis ball and is content with just a couple of tosses.

He met my niece’s children who are all under the age of six and loved lying in the middle of them as they played. He showed no apprehension at all and enjoyed their pets with a wagging tail.

All in all, Chevy is a happy, low-key boy who loves people and does well with other dogs and children. Due to his size, children in his home should be age 10 or older because Chevy is a big boy and could topple a small child.

Chevy enjoys a good game of tennis every now and then!

Chevy seems to have no undesirable habits. He does not bark (unless left alone), he is 100% house trained (no accidents), does not beg, is a very neat water drinker, and is extremely gentle when taking treats or giving little kisses. Chevy’s forever home will need a fenced yard; he will follow you if you leave him and he would be safest with a fence.

We feed Chevy at the opposite end of the kitchen from our resident dog, but he does not resource guard his food or anything else. He does have the Golden nudge and leans in for loves and hugs!

Chevy has free roam along with our resident dog when we leave the house. He does bark when we leave but when we return, we find him laying quietly on the loveseat by the door on the floor with our girl. He has shown no destructive behavior.

When he does ride along in the car, he is GRreat! He sits or lies down quietly. He happily hops in with his front legs but needs a boost to get his back legs in. He needs a little help out of the car as well.

Chevy has been to the vet for his wellness exam and had some special tests done for the panting and coughing. His blood work was all good and his heart and lung x-rays were clear. It has not been diagnosed but the vet considered that the panting, coughing, and weakness in is back legs could be symptoms of Laryngeal Paralysis which has been known to occur in older Golden Retrievers.

Chevy was prescribed Trazadone, which he is currently taking twice a day. This medicine is used to relax the muscles attached to the larynx, which can help reduce panting and coughing. More information to come on this in future updates.

The life I would love to see for Chevy includes a family that appreciates his handsome white face, his expressive eyes, his wagging tail, and mostly his sweet loving soul! Chevy requires low activity, love, patience, someone home the majority of time and would benefit from another dog as his friend.

Chevy is a very good and happy dog who will be a fabulous companion and a GReat addition to the right family!
