Cheyenne 10-305

Profile

Cheyenne is an eight year old spayed female who arrived at my home on Sunday Nov. 14th due to bad weather we stayed overnight at my sister in Belle Plaine. She was really stressed out and not used to being in the house the first few days, so accidents were normal as she isn't housebroke yet and Cheyenne did a lot of pacing. The first few days we just worked on adjusting to new surroundings and assessing her needs.

One of them is a lot of outdoor running to relax her more. She is sleek and long legged and   has lots of energy, hard to keep her in one spot the first days. By picture you can see I finally  got her to relax and sleep on couch as she wouldn't lay on the floor by me. She does sleep in porch at night and seems to be calmer at present in her own space at night.

Cheyenne's forever home will need an adult only family due to mouthing issues. She is destructive of stuffed toys, tennis and racket balls, paper, and will find things if laying around to chew on-have found best so far is a KONG BALL, raw hides, and nyla bones smeared with treats to keep her occupied. Cheyenne will need to be exercised at least twice a day on long runs or in large fenced free roaming area to run or chase balls. She loves to come back and do belly rubs or pets after running. Cheyenne knows her name and comes when called and will sit for short periods when asked to sit.

Cheyenne was an outside dog, so just being potty trained, and has had no accidents in house since first week, but does go outside shortly after drinking lots of water and things have gone nicely. Cheyenne has long legs which she will use for counter surfing as very food oriented. She needs someone with a lot of patience to learn her right and wrong in proper ways due to high anxiety and fears.

Medically she is healthy and only on normal heartworm and frontline at present. Cheyenne does have a small fatty tumor on breast that is normal in many dogs and only needs to be watched. Sometimes while running a lot she does show some signs of hip problem by favoring one back leg.

Cheyenne loves snow and will scoop snow while out running when thirsty. She has a beautiful golden short soft coat for easy maintenance and lovely brown eyes. Cheyenne gets along nicely with kitten and resident dog in house. Adopters watch for changes coming with Cheyenne in updates as she learns ropes of indoor living.

Updates

Cheyenne is settling down and learning to relax indoors now. She has moved from sleeping on the bed on the porch to my bed as you can see in picture. While I'm on computer she will go on the bed and sleep, which means she has come a long way from being tied to me and not pacing. Cheyenne has also learned that the couch is a nice place to relax and take a nap or cuddle when watching TV, so now has free roam when I'm in the house. She is gated on porch when I leave for a short time and she is fine.

The Kong balls have worked wonderfully to keep her entertained along with nylabone. Outside she loves to jump and run in snow banks to play as you can see in picture. Also she carries her ball along with her when on the move. Her and resident also chase squirrels from the bird feeder or watch them out the window.

She walks nicely when on leash but we have some work as cars or vehicles seem to scare her when on the leash at times. Also gets scared when on leash in town, so will have to do more of this as she is not used to it. She is outside when I blow snow and have done a lot of that lately and it doesn't bother her.

She still wants to counter surf as she is very food and treat oriented because of high metabolism, so we still have work to do. She is a very active dog so would not do well with small children. She actually plays with the kitten and the kitten plays with her tail, but as yet haven't been able to get a picture. I also have an adult cat which she doesn't chase, but does bark at occasionally.

She loves riding in the car and I am working on getting Cheyenne to stay in the backseat, without jumping to the front when I get out. I did take her to a friend's house and she was also okay with their dog, but when in a new house she will try to get into things lying around.

Cheyenne is very willing to learn and feeding is going very well, but she does have trouble when trying to take chews away yet. So we are working on sit and stay now before feeding, so she goes to eat only on command and am trying to enforce stay with ball playing as well.

Cheyenne would love a forever home this next year with a large place to run, or long walks, or another dog to play with and will need a fence, as when frightened will run away. She is a very loving dog and just needs someone willing to teach her the new ways.

Merry Christmas to the Golden Seniors and their fosters! Merry Christmas to the Senior Goldens and their fosters from Anonymous

It is great to see how Cheyenne can progress from week to week.

Cheyenne is making progress with eating out of the dish without grabbing at hands for food. She now has a couple of Kong balls for exercise which she loves to run and catch as you can see in picture. Too much running and Cheyenne's back leg or hip will bother her as she will not put pressure on it or hold it up in the air when running. Of course, the cold weather now isn't helping much either.

She still has a lot of anxiety in the house not knowing what is okay. She relaxes on porch at night and sleeps through the night.

She did give me a scare the other day when I went outside to do a little shoveling. Cheyenne started a high pitch screaming like she was hurt and I rushed back in to see what was wrong and she just looked at me. Guess this scream is just to say I don't want to stay here by myself, come and get me. She has also used this screaming howl if she wants to go outside in morning. She can bark, but seems to use this howl for getting attention faster. Cheyenne wants a forever home that will give her patience in learning indoor rules and lots of love.

She is good with cats if supervised, but will chase or get rough if she plays with them. It only took about a week to potty train her and now working on a longer schedule in between breaks as we have had no accidents.

I am also trying to introduce her to tug ropes to entertain her in the house and keep her occupied. If left without things to do, she decides to find things on her own. She will chew up anything laying around within reach due to anxiety. Currently she can not be left alone without being gated in a room.

In the evenings I am learning her to relax on couch with lot of touching and petting, instead of being in constant motion.
