7/29/05: Chubby has been at my house for 5 days now and is a perfect house dog. He occasionally picks up things and carries them around (socks, slippers, plastic bottles), but with the addition of stuffed toys he shifts his interest to more appropriate items. He has never chewed anything up (OK, he chews on the empty plastic bottles). He gets along fine with my cats and dogs. If the play gets too rough or lengthy he will let the others know and they back off. He likes to go for car rides and gets into the car OK, but sometimes needs a little support getting down due to his arthritis (see below).
I got Chubby back from the vet tonight after his checkup and neutering. He weighs in at 96 lbs (and could lose a little). I have a few little bits of bad news. He is Lymes disease + (what a surprise with all of the ticks they were pulling off him at the pound). Fortunately this is treatable without a lot of bad side effects. He also has pretty severe arthritis in both of his front paws. They were known to be injured. It is believed that he jumped from a roof at his former home. The vet said the x-rays looked like a pretty severe injury or possibly rheumatoid arthritis (although that is very rare in dogs). The one other possibility, at least in part, is that the Lymes disease has caused some of this and maybe it will improve as we treat the Lymes disease. He is on antibiotics and Rimadyl for now and if his walking improves and looks less painful we will probably keep him on a lower dose of the Rimadyl. They said to keep his exercise down to a slower pace and keep him on glucosamine (either supplements or in food) and keep his weight down. I would consider a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement. Otherwise, the staff at the vet's office was very bowled over by what a nice dog he is. The vet said he wanted to take him home himself!
Chubby has been groomed and really seemed to enjoy it! He really is a very sweet dog that just needs a home where he is able to take it easy and be comfortable. He loves his people and will follow you around everywhere you go. He likes a nice soft bed to sleep on and preferably very few stairs. :-) Not much to ask after what he's been through!!
