Welcome to RAGOM, Kelly! Kelly is a purebred female Golden Retriever who is around a year old. She has been with us for a week and is starting to settle in. At her vet visit, she weighed in at 67 lbs. Kelly is up-to-date on her shots, heartworm negative, and microchipped. She does have Eye Entropion and will be seeing a specialist in the near future.

Kelly is a very happy, sweet puppy. You can see the pure joy in her face when she discovers a new toy or has some room to run around. She really likes tennis balls. We are working on house training and she is doing really well.

Kelly has a lot of energy and will need a family that will make sure she gets a lot of exercise. She is getting along well with our two resident dogs and is playing with them more every day. Kelly is a happy, goofy puppy who needs a lot of love and patience in her forever home.

Sweet Kelly was adopted on Saturday and is now home with her fantastic forever family who drove almost 5 hours each way to meet her! She has the most adorable new fur sister and the two of them instantly bonded. Her mom and dad are pretty terrific also. :) Kelly, now known as Coco, will be living the best life a Golden could have. Congratulations to the R family!

Just a quick update on sweet Kelly. She attended the meet and greet last weekend and did great - a little shy, but she was open to all the petting and attention she received. One of our volunteers got a fantastic face shot so you can all appreciate how truly beautiful this girl is.

On Tuesday, Kelly had her surgery to get her eyes fixed. The surgery went perfectly and she is doing great. We have so far been able to avoid her having to wear a cone - she is completely leaving the site alone. As you can see in the picture, an incision was made on each eye to remove some of the excess skin so that her eyelids would not roll in and out. She looks fantastic. The stitches come out on May 28th and then this girl is ready for her new home.

To tell you all the truth, I am bit surprised that this girl has not been snatched up by a family yet. She is absolutely perfect and not even a year yet. She is very social, very mellow in the house and playful outside, she is beginning to master her house training - 2 days and no accidents! - and she is stunningly beautiful. She just wants to be cuddled and loved and always near her people when they are home. She loves all other dogs. Yes, she has a few quirks - loud noises will cause her to startle, she is still not great about getting into a car (but is so much better), and she is a bit skittish. However, in our home, where she is comfortable, she is a totally "normal" 10-month-old puppy. She is going to make some lucky family so incredibly happy.

A few quick updates about this sweet girl. First, in case anyone is wondering, Kelly definitely loves water! After the storms last night, we had a few massive muddy puddles (or small ponds, depending how you want to look at it) and Kelly was in heaven - splashing with her paws, putting her whole head into the water, and rolling around. I wasn't able to get a picture of the worst of it - but as the sun was drying the puddles up - she managed a while later to find a smaller one to play in. While her filth level at this time was not bad - imagine her whole body covered and you will get the picture of what she was like earlier.

On a more serious side, Kelly had her appointment with the eye specialist yesterday and just as we thought, she will need surgery to correct her eyes. She has entropian in her right eye (the eyelid curls in and the lashes have created a small ulcer on her eyeball) and ectropian in her left eye (the eyelid curves out). Both of these conditions are easily corrected with a relatively simple surgery. Kelly is scheduled for next Tuesday and 10 days later, she will be ready to go to her forever home.

In the meantime, if you want to meet the sweetest golden puppy come out this Saturday to Chuck and Don's in Edina - just be prepared - you will fall in love!

Sweet Kelly came to visit for the weekend so that she could meet a potential forever family. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as the resident dog of this family was just not sure that she was ready to welcome a new young pup into her cherished home. So Kelly is once again available.

While she she was only to be here for a couple days, we are delighted that she will be staying with us as her new permanent foster. Thank you to her former fosters, Jason and Antji, for taking such good care of her and allowing us to help her on the rest of her journey to find her forever home. As mentioned in previous updates, Kelly has eye entropian (a portion of the eyelid is inverted or folded inward) for which she has had one surgery, but is thought that she will need one more to completely correct this. Her appointment to see the eye specialist is at the end of May and we will then know the treatment she will receive.

In the meantime, this condition does not slow this girl down. She is happy, playful, affectionate and loving. Really, an incredibly gem. Because she did come from a breeding facitlity, she does exhibit some behaviors typical to dogs from this environment - she startles very easily, she will back away when you walk up to her head-on, and she looks to the other dogs for guidance on appropriate behaviors - however, unlike many other breeder dogs, she is actually very social and loves human touch. On her first night here, she surprised me by jumping up on the bed to sleep (generally our pups do not sleep on our bed, but on dog beds in the room), plopped her head on the pillow right next to mine and promptly fell asleep snuggled as close to me as she could get. She did not move all night long and had to roused from sleep the next morning to go out.

While she has only been here a few days, I have spoken quite a bit to her previous foster mom and dad, and here are the things this sweet girl needs in her forever home:

  • A fenced-in yard (she does startle easily and will not go potty on a leash).
  • A quieter household - while she does fine with children we have encountered on our walks, loud noises and lots of commotion do stress her out a bit.
  • A family committed to continuing her potty training - we are working on it and at night she is fine, but she still does have accidents.
  • Another larger, confident dog - while her first day here she was a bit mellow and quiet (very common while she was adapting to our household), she definitely has a playful side and wants to run and play. She is only 10 months old and her puppy energy that was not allowed to emerge when she was younger is now coming out. She is fantastic at reading other dogs' signs and is not obnoxious in asking to play, but if asked or engaged by another dog, she is all in!
  • Lots of love and patience to help her become all she can be.
  • Finally, a family committed to helping her lose some weight. Right now, she is a chunky monkey at 67 pounds - I would imagine she has at least 10 pounds to lose. Having said that, she does have a shorter frame, however, she is a stockier girl.

In just two short days, Kelly has wormed her way into our hearts. She is a very special girl who is looking for that very special family to call all her own.
