10/14/2013:

Hey, guys! My name is Cody, and I am a complete lover boy that loves to relax and spend time with my humans. I am 5 years old, male, an adorable Golden Retriever mix, and am up-to-date on all my vaccinations, neutering, etc. I currently am living in Eden Prairie, and boy, do I love all the neighborhood dogs and parks! I am housetrained, very gentle, and love to be in good company - be it dogs or humans. Mom says I am low-maintenance. ;-) I have traveled thousands of miles to be alive and in this marvelous Minnesota place, and now I can finally tell you guys a little bit about myself!

My first night in my new plush carpeted box (I guess they call these things "homes"), I LOVED it! I was very excitable, since I was stuck in a car for 3 days while I came from my old home - a high-kill shelter in Atlanta, Georgia. I met my new foster mom, dad, and also, their kitties - and boy, I really want to meet those big squirrels! I love giving my new friends kisses, and laying on their toes, and going on new adventures with them. I am not a huge fan of staying in my crate for long periods of time, but I don't mind relaxing for the night in my own bedroom, filled with dog food, water, my own bed, and squeaky toys! I did whine for about 20 minutes before settling in for the night, but I'm getting better - I just know I want to snuggle my humans at night, instead of sitting all by myself! I do get a little too excited around my new big squirrels (I guess they call these things "kitties"), so I cannot go to a home with cats. However, I love little kids, big kids, and dogs (I let a puppy jump all over me this weekend), so I can go to any home with a combination of these! My motto is "it's all good!"

My first week also went well at my new house. I am okay staying at home by myself for a decent chunk of the morning/afternoon, and Foster Mom says that I could roam the house without any worry all day and night. I also do well in a room during the day with all my fun toys, too. Since I'm living with kitties, I need to stay in my room for a little bit during the afternoon so that we won't get into any quarrels. I don't have any accidents in the house, and I love to go on walks! Those are my favorite!

I also went camping with my humans this weekend - they said I'm the best camping dog ever. I played with 7 other humans, 3 other dogs, and I had a ton of fun! I sit nicely around a campfire, love to hike, and rumor has it that I am a great tent heater. :-) So, if my forever home likes to hike and camp, I'm your guy! Since I am a little underweight and not used to this great Golden Life, I did get quite tired after the long hike and took a really long nap next to the campfire, but I recovered the next morning and was ready to go on another adventure through the river valley. I also have kennel cough right now, but am starting to feel a little better now that I have pills to help me out.

So, I'll give you the "Too Long, Didn't Read" version, in case you like bullet points:

  • 5 years old, male, neutered, UTD on vaccines, medicine, etc.
  • Great with kids, dogs, adults - must go to a cat-free home
  • House trained!
  • Mellow, gentle, but can be excitable
  • Can be trusted to roam house all day/night - no counter surfing, either
  • No physical fence needed - does just fine on tie-out (could be trained in his boundaries, too - he doesn't tug on the tie-out whatsoever)
  • Can be left home alone for longer periods of time
  • Walks great on leash
  • No resource guarding whatsoever
  • Has kennel cough, but is recovering
  • A little underweight, but he is getting better with this as he is eating more lately
  • Has been learning his name well, knows "sit" command
  • No anxieties - is the most "chill" and easy-going dog (minus the cat thing)

All in all, I am the easiest dog to get along with - humans and dogs alike! I love relaxing and watching a good game of football (or something else, of course), and just being around people. Want to be my friend? :-)

Cody was very happily adopted on January 11 by Anne G and her RAGOM alum, Zoe. They were both very excited to prepare for and welcome Cody into their home.

Anne had been working with RAGOM for some time to find a good match for her pack, and was really pleased with the way that Cody and Zoe interacted when they had their first meeting.

Cody moved right in and emptied the toy basked at Anne's, and Zoe showed an incredible amount of spunk and is determined to get Cody to play with her. He LOVES being in the middle of a pack, but may need some tutoring from Zoe on proper Golden play.

Attached is a photo of Cody and Zoe - settled into his new home.

Happy New Year from Cody!!

As 2014 kicks off, Cody is happy and healthy and working hard to be a good citizen.

He has had a busy few weeks - including a great meeting with a potential adopter, an overabundance of Christmas toys and attention, his first road trip with this foster family, and an improved attitude now that he is being tapered off of the steroid treatment for his cough.

In general, Cody seems to be handling the cold weather pretty well. Yesterday (think it was the sunshine), he asked to go outside and then decided to just lay on the back stoop for a while and watch the world go by. Sometimes he stays out in the backyard too long, and then comes flying in the house and runs around like a crazy dog until his feet warm up. Usually this includes one or two of his stuffed friends being thrown in the air and caught as he races about!

Cody traveled to WI for several family gatherings. He loves to be in the car and gets so excited to see what is going to happen next. He doesn't lay down much, but he is well-behaved and likes to watch out the windows (and stare at the driver in the rearview mirror). He shared the backseat with his resident female and they did great for all 10 hours in the car. He was a really easy guest and adapted well to each new environment. I was impressed to see how calm he was and how quickly he settled down at each party or overnight spot.

By the way, Cody is fine wearing a fleece coat, and I have to keep it hidden because when he sees it, he gets all giddy waiting to see if we will go for a walk or go for a ride in the car. But he drew the line at wearing a santa hat. I tried. I even tried bribes . . . but he somehow manged to eat the treat and use his paw to swipe off the hat before I could get a photo. Smart boy!

As you can see from the attached photos, Cody had plenty of holiday cheer! At "grandmum's" house he took no time in emptying the basket of toys and letting the Christmas penguin know who was boss!!

Just to provide a quick health update, Cody is in the last few days of being weaned off of the steroids that were supporting the treatment for his lung infection and cough. We are watching for any signs of his symptoms returning. So far, he is doing great. The vet is very pleased with his progress, and very optimistic about his recovery.

I noticed something interesting about Cody a few days ago - he was laying on my lap watching football (he does really seem to enjoy the game ...) and I was stroking his paws. And I noticed that his front paws look like Golden Retriever feet, but his back paws look like those from a herding or cattle dog. Just another "something unique" about this special boy!

After 2+ weeks in his new foster home and with the continued improvement in his health, Cody's BIG personality continues to emerge.

Being a southern dog at heart, Cody was not initially sure about the snow and the bitter cold. But with some coaxing and a good example from his "big sister" dog, he was soon handling the winter weather like an old pro. He is still really happy to hang outside and loves to find spots of sunshine . . but he kind of forgets how cold it is and comes limping back to the door with frozen feet.

Cody has not met a dog or a person that he does not like. He just loves to be with other dogs and gets so excited to meet them. We did hear him bark at a dog for the first time this week . . . the Golden across the street was barking to get my attention and Cody was inviting her to come play through the fence. But mostly, he is content to sit in the yard or at the front window and silently watch dogs and people come and go.

While there are no cats in our house, Cody has had some pretty strong (high degree of interest, lunging) reactions to both cats and bunnies while he is walking or watching out the window. I would suggest that he is probably best suited to a house with no cats.

So, Cody had his first outing to a Meet and Greet today (you can see him all dressed up and ready to go in the attached photos). He does great in the car and was very excited to arrive at the store and check things out. Unfortunately, foster mom had the date wrong and there were no other Goldens to greet. He did look awfully cute, and was so enthusiastic, and managed to sweet talk the nice lady at the store into giving him some treats. We'll call this a practice run . . .

The medications that Cody is taking for his lung infection and cough seem to be working. While he will need antibiotics for a few more weeks, his visible symptoms are well under control, which is so great for this little guy - he can run and play and go for longer walks now without coughing or being short of breath. We will check in with the vet again next week and check his progress. He is also slowly adding a few healthy pounds to his frame.

As this lovable boy settles in and gets healthy, his confidence and strong will are showing themselves. He isn't naughty - and he DOES listen - but he is testing every boundary and figuring out what he can get away with. Guessing in a former life, he may have been "king" of his castle. He is not an alpha dog, but he wants what he wants. Earlier this week, he helped himself to a bone from the resident dog's mouth . . . just decided he wanted it and snuck up on her and "took" it. (Actually very funny to watch). This works fine with my submissive female, but may cause problems in other packs.

Stay tuned for more silly stories from curious Cody!!

Cody came to a new foster home last week. He was moved to make room for an expectant momma Golden. He has done a great job with the transition and is settling in quite nicely. He and his female resident dog friend are already a well-functioning pack.

Things have been quiet on the Cody update front - since he is being treated for a lung infection and cough. Poor guy had some sleepless nights, but he is under a vet's care and is responding very well to the new antibiotics and treatment. It may take a few weeks, but vet has indicated that he should have a full recovery.

The previous foster did a great job of highlighting so many of Cody's amazing qualities, but we will add a few additional insights into this great boy.

Cody enjoys toys (particularly partial to soft, stuffed toys) and we have not seen any issues with the sharing of stuffies, bones, or other items. He invents little games and tosses toys in the air and chases them. Very silly. Very playful. He doesn't really fetch, but likes to tease his humans by pretending he is giving you a toy and then grabbing it back at the last minute. And he is quick!!!

He loves to be outside. This morning, he is just laying out in the sunshine on the patio and will spend as long as a hour just hanging out. There are lots of activity in our Minneapolis neighborhood (people and dogs), and while he is curious, he does not generally bark at passers-by.

Cody is crate trained and will kennel on command. He can be in his crate (contentedly) with people home and moving around, or while you are out and about. We had some workers here the other day, and he just laid in his crate and watched them (very curious) while they came and went through the house.

He still needs some leash work, but LOVES to go for walks. And after some experimentation, we have found that a No-Pull Harness seems to work really well.

Cody is a very smart dog. Very smart. Quick to learn the routine in a new house. And eager to please.

He most definitely has some herding dog in his DNA and is so cute when he is trying to move all members of the household into proper position. He is not aggressive or forceful when he is doing this, but will gently nudge dogs and people to get them into his preferred order. Incredibly cute to watch.

Attaching a few more recent photos of young master Cody. He celebrated Thanksgiving with a houseful of people and there were several families that wanted to take this charmer home!!

Hiya, friends! Not much has happened in the past few days. Just being my gentle, easy-going self. However, I have learned how to play with my stuffed pheasant, and I love it! I take it everywhere I go! I also like to play with my tennis ball now. I wasn't a huge fan of toys when I first arrived here, but now I love them. I can't catch them very well yet, but I am sure trying my hardest!

I thought I'd show you a little bit of the fun I had last weekend with my new human and doggy friends - did I mention I am a great hiker? Here are some pictures from my fun adventures. Maybe you would like to take me on your adventure, too!

Oh, I forgot! I am going to be out at Chuck and Don's in Shakopee on Saturday from 12-2 if you would like to meet me! I would love to say, "Hi, my name is Cody! I have just met you, and I looove you!"

Enjoy!
