Comet 11-293

Comet arrived on Sunday evening after a long trip from his temporary foster home in Iowa. He didn't quite know what happened. He met my two guys with no problems. He even ate some dinner later that evening. He hung out with us for the evening and slept quietly in a crate all night long.

Comet is nine-years old. He weighs 96 pounds and has already been neutered. His temporary foster took him to the vet so he's all up-to-date and has no parasites, his bloodwork seems to be within normal ranges and he seems very healthy. I need to take him to the vet to get a microchip, but that's all the vet work he'll need at this time. He's a big boy and while he could probably lose a couple of pounds, he's not at all overweight. He was surrendered after nine years because his family's living situation had changed and they no longer could have a dog. He spent most of his life as a house dog, but the last couple of years he spent living outside. He has quickly adapted to life inside and has not had a single accident in my house. He is not scared of different types of flooring and he has not tried to get on any furniture, household activity doesn't phase him one bit.

Somewhere along the line, somebody gave him a crazy haircut. Goldens should not have haircuts, they can be trimmed up, but they need their coat, both to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They are not cooler when their fur is cut, but they are prone to sunburn in the summer and cold in the winter. It will take several months for Comet's coat to grow in, but judging what was not cut, he will be beautiful...in about six-months. Hopefully by the time it gets cold here, enough of his coat will have grown in to keep him warm...or he will need a jacket for this winter.

He walks wonderfully when wearing a gentle leader. He pulls like a freight train when he's only using his flat collar....so we'll use a gentle leader.

I bathed him today and I think he was purring. He loved it! He wasn't such a fan of getting his nails trim, but he allowed it....so now he smells better and he no longer clicks on the wood floors. I cleaned his ears out too. He is a super nice boy.

If you are looking for a nice adult dog, Comet just may be it....he can go to almost any living situation and so far is dog and cat approved. I'll update more as I get to know him.

On 2.20.2016, The Rainbow Bridge received another angel. It is with great sadness that I inform the RAGOM community of the passing of Comet 11-293.

You entered my life on September 16, 2011, just 3 weeks shy of your 10th birthday. You seemed to sense that our home was your home and took to us immediately, we loved you from the start!

Though I had you by my side 4 years 5 months, our time together somehow, seemed short. I miss your "Golden" nudge. You insisted upon one hand petting you while furr-mom dispensed water from the fridge, during vacuuming and pretty much any time one hand was free.

I miss my "escape artist". There were a few times when the back yard gate got accidentally left ajar and out came "Houdini". You would wander just far enough so that I could see you, and then waited for me to engage in the game of "catch me if you can". You eventually let me get you, but not without an adventure around the neighborhood.

I miss Sunday morning chores. Your job was to retrieve the Sunday paper from the front porch to kitchen. You performed this with GR precision. Windy and Dudley cheered you on with loud, crazy barking, fully supporting your work with no underlying motive (this weekly delivery also meant every "furr-butt" received a treat Smile).

I miss feeding time. You had this ‘bronco bull’ act that was a hoot to watch, and did not settle down until that bowl was placed in front of you.

There are so many great things to say about Comet Henry he loved unconditionally. We miss miss you deeply.

Love & Hugs . . . until we meet again!

Comet has been here for one week. He is settling in. He is used to our routine already. He must have spent a lot of time outside in his past life because it's taken some time for him to become comfortable in the house. He isn't too sure what's okay for dogs and what's for the people. He's getting better and he hasn't had any inappropriate items in his mouth in the last couple of days. Because he's so tall, the kitchen counter and the dining room table were seen as fair game to him....he's learning. We have a toy box for the dogs and he's figured out that those items are okay. He also needs lots of coaxing to actually come into the house. He's doing better, but he still would much rather go out than come in.

He has a super great personality and so far has never even growled. He does bark when he sees strange people near the house. He's more of a watch dog than either of my guys.

So far, I've crated him when nobody is home. I think that will continue until his habit of picking up stuff is gone. He also is crated at night. I've tried letting him free, but he ends up pacing around and barking at any noise he hears so he's always been taken back to his crate when it's apparent he can't settle down. It seems like he likes the safety of his crate and he feels secure in it.

We went to Petco the other day and he did GREAT! He walked right in and acted like a gentleman. One of the groomers saw us and asked me what happened to him....they know me, so they know I didn't do it, but they suggested I leave him alone and we'll all hope his fur will grow back properly....I guess there's a chance it won't grow back.

I still think he'd fit in almost anywhere. He doesn't need another dog, he'd be great for an older couple that want a mellow dog that still can be active when they want him to. He's a lover and he deserves a family of his own. Email your placement advisor if you think you're that person or family.

This picture is from his surrendering owners and shows what he looked like before his haircut. Beautiful boy!
